Moving from Berlin to Marburg: 471 km to the Lahn valley – and back

Moving company Berlin
From the Spree to the Lahn: moving to Marburg
To central Hesse
A move from Berlin to Marburg does not reach its destination on one motorway: from our base at Stromstraße 21 in Moabit the lorry takes the A2 to the Wolfsburg/Königslutter interchange, the A39 past Braunschweig, from the Salzgitter interchange the A7 to Kassel and there the A49 through northern Hesse – around 471 km altogether. You receive the fixed price after the survey; as a guide we quote from €1,780. We plan the move from Marburg to Berlin in the same way, only in the opposite direction.
The driving-time rule applies to the journey: after four and a half hours at the wheel, EU Regulation 561/2006 makes a 45-minute break mandatory, which brings us to approx. 7 hrs by lorry. Whether unloading in Marburg happens on the same day after loading or the next morning, we decide at the survey. On request we take care of packing, furniture assembly, parking restriction zones in Berlin and Marburg and storage if the new flat is not free yet. We are liable under § 451e HGB; for a piano or art, optional additional insurance can be arranged.

What the route to Marburg demands
One team for the outbound and the return trip
Our team sets off from Stromstraße 21 in Moabit and drives right to your door in Marburg – to the Oberstadt on the slope below the Landgrave's Castle, to the Südviertel or to Cappel and Wehrda. For the roughly 471 km we factor in driving time and the break; heavy removal lorries may not drive faster than 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 (5) StVO). We look at the stairwell, access and parking at both addresses during the survey, and the fixed price is based on that. Liability is under § 451e HGB, on the way to the Lahn as well as back to Berlin.

The Lahn valley and Berlin: brief answers
Studies, hospital, pharma: why people are drawn to Marburg
Many make the move from Berlin to Marburg for a university place: the Philipps-Universität, founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philip I, is considered the oldest still-existing university of Protestant foundation in the world and has more than 21,000 students. Added to that are the university hospital with over 4,200 employees in Marburg and the CSL Behring pharmaceutical site, the group's largest production and research plant. The district town of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district has around 73,600 inhabitants – anyone coming from Berlin swaps the big city for short distances in the Lahn valley.
Conversely, after graduating many make the move from Marburg to Berlin: the capital's job market, culture and circle of friends attract graduates as well as couples who want to return for professional or family reasons. We drive both directions with the same process and a fixed price after a survey.
Via the A2, A39, A7 and A49 into the Lahn valley: route and schedule
Around 471 kilometres lie between Moabit and Marburg. The lorry takes the AVUS and the Berlin ring road to the Werder interchange, the A2 past Magdeburg to the Wolfsburg/Königslutter interchange, then 50 km on the A39 around Braunschweig and Salzgitter. At the Salzgitter interchange the A7 begins towards Göttingen and Kassel; at the Kassel-Mitte interchange the A49 branches off, which since March 2025 has been continuous to the Ohmtal interchange. After around 68 km on it, the last stage leads off the motorway to Marburg.
With the mandatory 45-minute break after four and a half hours of driving time, we reckon with approx. 7 hrs of driving. On moving day we first load in Berlin or Marburg, secure delicate furniture with blankets and straps and unload at the destination, including assembly. Whether that happens on the same day or the next morning, we determine after the survey – the same for the outbound and the return move.
Oberstadt, Südviertel, Cappel: arriving in Marburg
Marburg consists of the core town and 18 districts with their own local councils. The historic Oberstadt runs down the slope below the Landgrave's Castle, which stands as the “crown of the town” above the old town; here we check particularly carefully how close the lorry can get to your door and how long the carrying distance will be. South of the castle lies the Südviertel with its Art Nouveau buildings, and in the core town St. Elizabeth's Church, the first purely Gothic church in Germany. Wehrda, Marbach and Cappel became part of the town in 1974, and the Richtsberg was built from 1963 as a new housing area.
Anyone moving back to Berlin after studying meets a much tighter housing market than on the Lahn; many therefore start searching months in advance. Once the new address is settled, we apply for the parking restriction with the Berlin district office and set the moving day to the key handover.
What the move to the Lahn costs
From a student room on the Richtsberg to a period flat in the Südviertel: for the move from Berlin to Marburg and from Marburg to Berlin, what counts above all is how much comes along. Rough figures for orientation:
| Household size | Cubic metres | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Student room / 1 room | 10–15 m³ | from €350 |
| 2-room household | 20–25 m³ | from €590 |
| 3-room household | 30–40 m³ | from €890 |
| 4-room household | 45–60 m³ | from €1,290 |
| House | from 60 m³ | on request after a survey |
For the roughly 471 km via the A2, A39, A7 and A49 we quote a guide price from €1,780 in both directions. The price becomes binding after a free survey.
How the price for Marburg is calculated
First the volume counts – it decides the vehicle and the number of removal workers. On the Berlin–Marburg long-distance move the roughly 471 km are added. After that, floor, lift and carrying distances have an effect, especially in the Oberstadt, as do extras such as furniture assembly or a parking restriction zone. For a shared-flat room a part load is usually the more affordable choice.
