From Berlin to Giessen
Moving to Giessen: university city on the Lahn
Guide
With around 88,500 inhabitants, Giessen is the seventh-largest city in Hesse and the administrative centre of Central Hesse; it is shaped by Justus Liebig University (founded in 1607) and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen. Many students move here at the start of term, as well as families and working people. We come from Berlin-Moabit and, through our private move service, plan your date to match the start of your tenancy and the flat handover – with a fixed price after a survey; we are liable for damage under § 451e HGB.
By lorry it is around 494 km from Stromstraße via the A9, A4 and A5, and about seven and a half hours with the statutory break. We coordinate parking restrictions in narrow city-centre streets with the city and schedule the move around the semester and the start of lectures. Whether a student flat in the city centre or a family home in Kleinlinden: we pack, transport and assemble on the agreed date. The route is described in detail on the page Berlin – Giessen move; places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

What we handle on your move to Giessen
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Central Hesse
We have no branch in Giessen; instead we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we clarify access, floor and parking space in advance – whether it is an old flat on the fourth floor without a lift near the Ludwigstraße or a house in Kleinlinden, Lützellinden or Wieseck. If a furniture lift is needed, it is listed as a separate item in the fixed price. We coordinate the parking restriction with the city's road traffic department. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. On request we schedule the date outside the weeks around the start of term, when many moves take place in the city. Read more about life in the city in the Giessen guide for newcomers.

From
planning to the Stadtbüro
In this guide you will find out which districts of Giessen suit your everyday life, which dealings with the authorities follow the move and which universities and employers shape the city. There are also practical tips on parking restrictions, registration at the Stadtbüro on Berliner Platz within two weeks and bulky waste collection. At the start of term in October and April, demand for flats and moving dates is especially high – plan earlier at those times. That way you are prepared from flat hunting to moving in.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Giessen
Giessen's districts at a glance
The largest part of the city is the core city with around 65,000 inhabitants: the city centre with the Ludwigstraße, JLU's main building and many old-building flats, plus the Weststadt across the Lahn. The university's institutes are mainly in the east (Philosophikum) and the south, where the University Hospital also stands. Besides the core city, five districts belong to Giessen: Wieseck in the north-east, Rödgen in the east, and Kleinlinden, Allendorf an der Lahn and Lützellinden in the south-west.
The outlying districts are quieter and characterised more by detached houses. Between Wieseck and the Philosophenwald lies the recreation area around the Schwanenteich, and the Mühlengärten were created on the Lahn for the 2014 State Garden Show. The Giessen Ring, made up of the A480, A485, B429 and B49, runs around the city. Whichever district you choose: we plan the approach individually and take one-way streets and parking restriction zones into account.
Universities, employers and leisure in Giessen
Giessen is a university city: Justus Liebig University (JLU) was founded in 1607 and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) in 1971; in 2018 around 10,600 people studied at the THM Giessen campus alone. The University Hospital in the south of the city is a major employer, along with public authorities – Giessen is the seat of the administrative region and the district – and many businesses in the region. With the Main-Weser railway to Frankfurt and Kassel and the line via Wetzlar towards Siegen, Giessen is an important rail hub.
The Botanical Garden of 1609 is the oldest university garden in Germany still on its original site. A popular destination is the Schiffenberg with its monastery complex, which hosts concerts in summer. Add to that the municipal theatre, the pubs around the Ludwigstraße and the Lahn meadows. Anyone wanting to combine a university atmosphere with short distances will find Giessen a balanced place between city life and the nature of Central Hesse.

Parking restriction zone in Giessen: responsibility, parking zones and emergency routes
For a move in Giessen, it is best to plan the parking space outside the building early. The City of Giessen lists the entry "Halteverbotszone einrichten" (setting up a parking restriction zone) in its citizens' services; traffic matters are handled by the road traffic department (Straßenverkehrsabteilung, tel. 0641 306-3200, email [email protected]). Please ask there directly or at the city administration (tel. 0641 306-0) before the move which documents, lead time and fee apply.
Important points for your planning:
- For the enquiry, have the street, house number, moving day, time and vehicle size ready so that the authority can estimate the length of parking lane required.
- The city operates a parking guidance system that shows the way when looking for a space and groups car parks into four parking zones. This helps if helpers or additional vehicles need to park near the flat. The city offers an overview of the parking zones as a map.
- In the Flussstraßenviertel, the municipal police announced on 28 October 2026 stepped-up checks on illegally parked vehicles because emergency routes must be kept clear. Never double-park the removal van there.
On request, we take care of coordination with the authority and the signage as part of our parking restriction zone service. An overview of our offer can be found under Removal company Giessen.
Registration, Stadtbüro and bulky waste in Giessen
After moving in, a nationwide deadline of two weeks applies: "Anyone who moves into a dwelling must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in" (§ 17(1) Federal Registration Act, BMG). In Giessen this is handled by the Stadtbüro at Berliner Platz 1 on the ground floor. According to the city, registering or re-registering your residence is also possible online; in person you are welcome at these times: Monday to Thursday 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, Friday 7:30 am to 1:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. You book appointments online; according to the city, you do not need an appointment to collect passports and identity cards. For queries, the Stadtbüro can be reached on 0641 306-1234 or 0641 306-2266. The city also lists the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) as a separate service; bring it with you from your landlord.
Bulky waste often accumulates before a move. The city offers an online form for booking bulky waste collection. Alternatively, the waste management centre at Lahnstraße 220 accepts bulky waste from private households. If you need to clear a flat, you will find our house clearance service. Students can find information under Student move; for everyday life, read Living in Giessen.
