From Berlin to Kassel
Moving to Kassel: the documenta city on the Fulda
Guide
A move to Kassel takes you to the only major city in North Hesse and, after Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, the third-largest city in the state. Kassel lies in the basin of the Fulda valley, surrounded by ranges of hills. Its landmark is the Hercules monument in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013; every five years, documenta – one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art – comes to the city. Kassel is divided into 23 local districts (Ortsbezirke). For your private move we clarify access, floor and parking space in advance.
We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 378 km via the A2, A39 and A7 to Kassel; including the statutory break that is about 6 hours, and with loading and unloading usually two days. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Kassel or back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. In Kassel you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). More on this under Moving Berlin – Kassel.

What we take care of on your move to Kassel
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Kassel
We have no branch in Kassel; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a period building in the Vorderer Westen or a house in Bad Wilhelmshöhe. Whether and how a parking restriction is set up in front of the new address, we clarify in line with the City of Kassel's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of the flat.

Part load for small amounts
For smaller moving volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Kassel can be cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments on the same route towards North Hesse. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few items are to follow.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Kassel raises many questions: which local district suits you, how does registration work at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) or online, and how do you order a bulky waste collection from the Stadtreiniger (municipal cleansing service)? This guide presents the 23 local districts from Mitte and the Vorderer Westen to Bad Wilhelmshöhe and summarises what the City of Kassel says about registration and bulky waste. Then there is the journey of around 378 km from Berlin via the A2, A39 and A7. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Kassel
The 23 local districts of Kassel
Kassel is divided into 23 local districts, each with its own local council. Around the city centre lie Mitte, the Südstadt by the Karlsaue park, the densely built-up Vorderer Westen and Wehlheiden; to the west, the city rises up to Bad Wilhelmshöhe with the Bergpark and the ICE station. Other local districts such as Harleshausen or Niederzwehren used to be independent municipalities.
In the Vorderer Westen and Wehlheiden there are many Wilhelminian-era and post-war buildings, often without a lift; on the outskirts, housing estates and detached houses predominate, some on hillsides. For the move, therefore, the specific address is what counts: we clarify floor, stairwell and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private moving service adapts to this.
University, Hercules and documenta
Kassel is the administrative seat of the Kassel administrative region and of the district of Kassel, and for centuries it was the residence of the Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel – as Wilhelmshöhe Palace and the Orangery in the Karlsaue bear witness. Kassel has been a university city since 1971; the city-centre campus of the University of Kassel on Holländischer Platz was built on the former Henschel factory site. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
Since 1999 the city has carried the title documenta-Stadt. If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a new job, fix your moving day early: according to the city, you can only register after moving in, and you can only order bulky waste collection once you live in Kassel. Long distances from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.
Moving costs – clear and fair
| Size of move | Price |
|---|---|
| One-room flat | from €359 |
| Two-room flat | from €579 |
| Three-room flat | from €884 |
| Four-room flat | from €1,299 |
| House/villa | individual quote |
We charge long-distance moves from €4.25/km. Arrange a free survey – free of charge and with no obligation.
These factors affect the price
How high the costs of your move are depends on the volume, the distance (from €4.25/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. If there is no parking directly in front of the door, we recommend a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone). We are also happy to advise you on furniture assembly and a part load.

Registering in Kassel: citizens' office, online service and deadline
According to the City of Kassel, anyone moving into a flat in Kassel should register no later than two weeks after moving in. The responsible office is the Bürgerbüro (citizens' office) in the town hall, Obere Königsstraße 8, 34117 Kassel. According to the city, registering your residence is free of charge and only possible after you have actually moved. So plan the handover of the flat so that you know the date you move in.
- Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung): without it, the Bürgerbüro will not process the registration. A tenancy agreement does not replace it. It contains the landlord's name and address, the actual move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of everyone moving in.
- In person: according to the city's page (as of August 2024), an appointment is required. An emergency consultation without an appointment, Monday to Friday from 8 to 9 am, only applies to urgent passport, ID and registration matters.
- Online: according to the city, the service is available for registering or re-registering your main residence. You need an ID card or eID card with the online ID function, the AusweisApp, an NFC-enabled phone or a card reader and a BundID account.
Ask your landlord for the confirmation early so that the appointment does not fail because of missing papers. More on settling in can be found in our guide to living in Kassel, and information on our service area on the Kassel location page.
Bulky waste and access in Kassel: Stadtreiniger and recycling centre
Before a move there is often bulky waste. In Kassel this is handled by the Stadtreiniger (municipal cleansing service). According to their page on kassel.de, private customers order online, with an order card or at the Servicebüro Mitte. A main or secondary residence in Kassel is required. So if you are new to the city, register first and then place your order.
- Waiting time: without an express appointment, according to the page collection takes place within about 14 days, Monday to Friday between 7 am and 3 pm.
- Putting items out: the items must be easily accessible at the roadside within reach of the vehicles by 7 am on collection day. Putting them out behind fences, walls, hedges or steps is not allowed. The vehicles do not drive onto private property, and parked cars must not obstruct the collection.
- Recycling centre: according to the Stadtreiniger, delivering normal household quantities yourself is free of charge. Tyres, toilets, baths and shower trays, doors and windows cost extra. According to the page, large electrical appliances in normal household quantities can be handed over free of charge with a collection.
The page is dated November 2021. So check fees and procedures with the Stadtreiniger on 0561 5003-0 before ordering. If entire households need to be cleared, our house clearance can help. For moving day itself we arrange our parking restriction zone service with you.
