Living in Kassel: Housing Districts & Registration

Kassel for New Residents
Kassel: documenta, Hercules and the Fulda in the Heart of the City
Settling in, not just moving
Kassel is the only major city in North Hesse and, after Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, the third-largest city in the state; the State Statistical Office gives almost 197,000 inhabitants. Since 1999 Kassel has carried the official additional designation documenta city (documenta-Stadt): the world art exhibition takes place here every five years. The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe with the Hercules monument has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 and, according to Wikipedia, is the largest landscaped hillside park in Europe. With the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe ICE station, the city lies on the Hanover–Würzburg high-speed line.
For newcomers, the first tasks are registration, flat-hunting and – if you have a car – the resident parking permit; in 2026 the city extended its paid parking zone to further districts. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Kassel. The route from Berlin – around 378 km via the A2, A39 and A7 – is described on our page Moving Berlin – Kassel. We also handle the opposite direction. By lorry we expect about 6 hours for the route including a break; loading and unloading can usually be done in one day.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Kassel
Old buildings, slopes, parking zone
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Kassel business. That is why we ask detailed questions before moving day: is the flat in an Art Nouveau building in the Vorderer Westen, on a slope towards Wilhelmshöhe or in the new paid parking zone? Is there a lift, is a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) needed? Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give you the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Kassel
for Newcomers
A move to Kassel raises some questions typical of the city: Art Nouveau buildings in the Vorderer Westen, apartment blocks without a lift in the city centre, hillside locations in the west of the city and the new paid parking zone. We clarify access and stairs in advance and apply for a parking restriction zone if needed. For registration, a tenancy agreement alone is not enough – the landlord confirmation must state the actual move-in date. On request we take care of furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet free – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Kassel
23 Local Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Kassel
Kassel is divided into 23 local districts, each with a directly elected local advisory council. The Vorderer Westen has many Art Nouveau apartment buildings, while Harleshausen and Bad Wilhelmshöhe have old half-timbered village centres; Bad Wilhelmshöhe includes settlements such as Mulang and Wahlershausen. The old town in the Mitte district was largely destroyed in 1943.
The Karlsaue park lies in the Südstadt on the bank of the Fulda, with the Fuldaaue opposite in Waldau. The university campus at Holländischer Platz is close to the centre. Where you live determines your tram line and carrying distance on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Kassel
In the region, Volkswagen manufactures at its Kassel plant in Baunatal and has further sites in Kassel; there are also Wintershall, Wingas, K+S and SMA Solar Technology, the largest photovoltaics company. As the seat of the administrative region and the district, Kassel offers many jobs in public administration. In the 2024/25 winter semester a good 21,000 people studied at the University of Kassel; the Kunsthochschule Kassel (art academy) is part of the university.
For leisure there is the Bergpark with Hercules and its water features in summer, the Karlsaue with the Orangery, the Grimmwelt and the State Theatre. In September the Wilhelmshöhe Mountain and Light Festival takes place. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source.

What the price depends on
Several factors count for a realistic cost estimate: the volume of your household goods, the distance to be covered (from €4.20/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also required to make the transport run smoothly. Furniture assembly and a shared load also affect the final price.

Registering in Kassel: Citizens' Office, Online Route and Documents
The citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) in the town hall (Obere Königsstraße 8) is responsible for registering your residence. According to the City of Kassel (page as of August 2024), you must register within two weeks of moving in; registering in advance is not possible. Registration itself is free of charge; late registration may result in a fine, although waiting times for appointments are taken into account.
- Online: only for the main residence and without an appointment, with an ID card or eID card with the online ID function activated, the AusweisApp and a BundID account. This is not possible for holders of an electronic residence permit (eAT).
- In person: book an appointment online; for urgent cases there is an emergency consultation without an appointment on weekdays from 8 to 9 am.
You should bring the IDs of everyone being registered, a marriage certificate if you are married, the divorce decree if you are divorced, and the landlord confirmation stating the actual move-in date; a tenancy agreement alone is not enough. Foreign certificates require the original and a translation. If you are moving from abroad, you also give your last German address. Children up to the age of 16 are registered by the person into whose flat they move. If you move within Germany, you do not have to deregister at your old place of residence. According to the city, anyone with a second home in Kassel pays a second-home tax of 8 per cent of the net cold rent. You can find more on planning in the Kassel guide.
Daily Life in Kassel: Resident Parking, Bulky Waste and Nursery Places
If you live in the paid parking zone and want to park without a ticket, you need a resident parking permit. According to the City of Kassel, it costs a flat 110 euros a year; the requirements are a registered residence in the resident parking district and a vehicle of up to 3.5 tonnes registered to you or in your permanent use. The city has extended paid parking zone II to districts such as Vorderer Westen, Wehlheiden, Bad Wilhelmshöhe, Südstadt, Unterneustadt, Wesertor, Rothenditmold and Nord-Holland; this has been implemented step by step since May 2026. You can apply for the permit online or at the road traffic authority in the Hölkesches Haus (Friedrichsstraße 36).
For furniture left over after the move: according to the city, the Stadtreiniger usually collect bulky waste from private households within about 14 days, booked online, by order card or at the Servicebüro Mitte. The city gives a price of 40 euros on invoice or 35 euros paid in advance (page as of 2021, please check beforehand). Dropping items off yourself at the recycling centre is free of charge in normal household quantities.
For families, the search for a place runs via the kibeka.kassel.de portal. The child and at least one person with parental responsibility must have their main residence in Kassel, and children aged 3 to 6 have a legal right to a nursery place. You can find our services for moving within the city under Moving Kassel.
