Moving from Berlin to Brig (Switzerland) – and back

Removal company Berlin
Over the Alpine passes to the Upper Valais: moving Berlin ↔ Brig
Move without stress
A move from Berlin to Brig takes you to the German-speaking Upper Valais, to Brig-Glis where the Saltina flows into the Rhône – and across a customs border: Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, and your household goods are declared as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) with form 18.44 and an inventory list. As Beste Umzug Unternehmen we come from Berlin, Stromstraße 21 in Moabit, and drive with one team right to your door. The shortest road connection, around 986 km, ends on mountain pass roads; we decide at the survey which route the lorry takes, along with the fixed price.
We also plan the return move from Brig to Berlin with one team: inventory list for export, packing, the drive and unloading in Berlin. At approx. 14.5 hrs of lorry driving time including breaks, the route exceeds the daily driving time under EU Regulation 561/2006 – we drive with two drivers or over two days. The Oberalp and Furka passes are closed in winter; we then take a longer route, for example via Bern and the Lötschberg car-carrying train (Autoverlad), if the lorry can be loaded onto it. In Switzerland, lorries over 3.5 t do not drive at night from 10 pm to 5 am. Liability is under the HGB (§ 451e).

Move
planning Berlin ↔ Brig
For the move to Brig we clarify in advance what is different in Switzerland: inventory list and form 18.44 for the removal goods, proof such as an employment or tenancy contract, the LSVA for the lorry and the route depending on the season. Then there is the parking restriction in Berlin via the district office and a parking space in Brig-Glis, assembly, a part load for small quantities and interim storage. FAQ on long-distance moves in both directions
To Brig and back: household goods across the Swiss customs border
Anyone moving from Berlin to Brig is moving their residence to a country outside the EU customs union. Household goods that you have used yourself for at least six months and will continue to use in Switzerland can be imported duty-free as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) – with the completed and signed form 18.44, an inventory list in which furniture, valuables and large appliances are listed individually, and proof of the change of residence such as an employment or tenancy contract. Clearance takes place during the opening hours of the customs offices for commercial goods, usually on working days. We cover the way from the Berlin flat to the address in Brig-Glis, with assembly and unpacking on request.
For the return move from Brig to Berlin you present an inventory list with your addresses to the Swiss export customs office. In Germany the removal goods are duty-free if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months and have used the items for at least six months (Regulation (EC) 1186/2009); they are declared to German customs. Here too, there is a fixed price after the survey.
The route to Brig: around 986 km, a different way in winter
The shortest road connection runs via the AVUS and A10 onto the A9 to Nuremberg, via the A6 and A7 to Memmingen, the A96 to Lindau, briefly along the Austrian A14 and then on the Swiss A13 to Reichenau near Chur. From there the main road 19 (Hauptstrasse 19) leads through the Vorderrhein valley, over the Oberalp Pass (2,044 m) to Andermatt and over the Furka Pass (2,429 m) into the Rhône valley to Brig. That is around 986 km and approx. 14.5 hrs of lorry driving time including breaks, so two drivers or two days.
Both passes are closed in winter, the Oberalp roughly from November to May, the Furka from October to May. We then take a longer route, for example via Basel and Bern to the Lötschberg car-carrying train (Kandersteg–Goppenstein) – according to BLS, whether a lorry can be loaded depends on vehicle type, weight, width and height – or entirely by road via Lake Geneva and the A9 through the Rhône valley. We decide at the survey which route your move takes; the same planning applies to the return move to Berlin.
Arriving in Brig-Glis – and back to Berlin
Brig-Glis is the main town of the district of Brig and the economic centre of the German-speaking Upper Valais. The municipality was formed in 1973 from Brig, Glis (with the hamlet of Gamsen) and Brigerbad; its landmark is the Stockalper Palace. At Brig station, the Bern–Milan line through the Simplon Tunnel crosses the narrow-gauge railway from Chur to Zermatt, on which the Glacier Express also runs, and main road 9 runs through the municipality to the Simplon Pass. For the move we need your address early to check access, parking space and carrying routes. After moving in you register with the municipality of Brig-Glis; the municipality will tell you the deadline and documents.
For the return move to Berlin you register the new flat at the registration office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks, with your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We apply for the parking restriction at the Berlin address at the road traffic authority of the district office; the signs must be in place 72 hours beforehand. We set the loading day in Brig so that the flat handover and customs fit together on one working day and there is no unnecessary waiting time.
