Long-distance move Berlin – Brig-Glis: route customs, duration

From Berlin to Brig
Long-distance move to Brig: from Moabit to the Upper Valais
Guide
A move to Brig takes you out of the EU into Switzerland: your household goods are declared at the border as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) using form 18.44, which is duty-free if you move your place of residence and have used the items yourself for at least six months. Brig-Glis is the centre of the German-speaking Upper Valais at the foot of the Simplon Pass. Under Long-distance moves you will find our other routes. We take care of planning, packing, transport, the customs clearance appointment and assembly.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 986 km via the A9, A7, the Rhine Valley and the Alps to Brig; that is about 14.5 hours including breaks – so with two drivers or an overnight stop. For Switzerland you declare your household goods as removal goods using form 18.44; within the EU there would be no customs formalities. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Brig or from Brig back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. Read more about districts and everyday life in the Brig moving guide.

From
planning to assembly
A long-distance move to Switzerland involves more than transport: customs clearance as removal goods with form 18.44 during the customs office's opening hours, deregistration in Germany, registration in Brig-Glis within 14 days and health insurance within three months all have to fit together. Add to that around 986 km of driving with driving-time limits, the Sunday driving ban in Germany, tolls and mountain passes closed in winter. An inventory list by room helps at customs and when unloading. That way your move to Brig runs with no idle time.

Frequent questions
Customs and formalities when moving to Brig
As Switzerland is not part of the EU, your household goods are cleared through customs at the border when you move to Brig – as removal goods, usually duty-free. You need form 18.44 from the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security and an inventory list. The condition is that you move your place of residence to Switzerland and have used the items yourself for at least six months and continue to use them.
For your stay, EU citizens who work or stay for longer need a residence permit, which you apply for when registering with the municipality. Schedule border clearance during the opening hours of the customs office for commercial goods so that your long-distance move to Switzerland runs without waiting time.
What makes the canton of Valais and the town of Brig special
Brig lies at the foot of the Simplon Pass and is the centre of the German-speaking Upper Valais; the canton of Valais itself is bilingual, German and French. If you move into a flat here, you register within 14 days, according to the town of Brig-Glis. Health insurance is compulsory in Switzerland and must be taken out within three months of taking up residence.
Residential locations in Brig range from the old town with its narrow lanes to hillside sites, which call for special planning of access. We clarify gradient, access and floor during the survey and plan the vehicle and movers accordingly. In winter, Alpine passes may be closed, so we fix the route in advance – that way your move to the canton of Valais succeeds without nasty surprises.

Brig-Glis: customs for your vehicle and household goods
If you take household goods and a car to Brig-Glis, according to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) you can import both duty-free if you move your place of residence to Switzerland, you have personally used the items for at least six months and you continue to use them. According to the BAZG, removal goods include household effects, collections, animals and the car. As proof of the change of residence for people moving from the EU/EFTA, it names an employment contract, tenancy agreement or deregistration certificate. Customs assessment is done with form 18.44 and takes place during the opening hours of the customs offices for commercial goods.
For the vehicle, the BAZG sets out its own rules:
- It is cleared at a staffed customs office the first time it crosses the border into Switzerland.
- For registration with the cantonal road traffic office, customs issues inspection report 13.20 A as proof of customs clearance.
- If the car does not count as removal goods, a customs permit 15.30 may be possible; with it, the car may be used without customs clearance for at most two years from the change of residence.
- You must apply for Swiss number plates at the cantonal road traffic office within one year at the latest.
If clearance was missed, according to the BAZG it must be made up immediately at a staffed office. Our route planning determines which customs office the removal van uses. More on this in Long-distance move to Switzerland and in the Brig moving guide.
Brig-Glis: registering at the town office and car parks
In Brig-Glis the town asks you to report your arrival within 14 days and points out that you should first deregister from your previous municipality of residence. For Swiss nationals, the municipality lists the original certificate of origin (Heimatschein), the health insurance card or policy of all family members and a copy of the tenancy agreement as documents; for foreign nationals there is a separate registration form. In person, you go to the town office (Stadtbüro), Alte Simplonstrasse 28, 3900 Brig, phone +41 27 922 41 50: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 17.00, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.00 to 13.00. According to the municipality, no permits are issued for stays of less than three months.
If you come to Brig-Glis with a van, mind the height: the Altstadt car park allows a maximum of 2.10 m, the Bahnhof (station) car park 2.15 m. In both, the first 20 minutes are free; after that an hour costs CHF 0.80 between 7.00 and 19.00 and CHF 0.40 at night. Weekly tickets are available in advance from the town office: Altstadt CHF 30, Bahnhof CHF 40. The municipal police enforce the parking rules (phone +41 27 922 41 60); the pages we checked do not name a separate procedure for removal vans. Everyday life after moving in is described in Living in Brig.
