Long-distance move Berlin – Leoben: route process & schedule

From Berlin to Upper Styria
Long-distance move to Leoben: via Passau and the Pyhrn
Guide
A long-distance move to Leoben is long, but not a customs matter: Germany and Austria are both in the EU, so your household goods travel without customs papers. What needs planning is the route of around 856 km with driving times, the GO toll for lorries over 3.5 t, the German Sunday driving ban and, after arrival, the registration form (Meldezettel) within three days. After Graz, Leoben is the second-largest town in Styria and home to the Montanuniversität (University of Leoben). We handle packing, transport and assembly; the dealings with the authorities are up to you.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive via the A9, the A93 and the A3 to Passau, via the Innkreis motorway into the Wels area and on the Pyhrn motorway through the Bosruck Tunnel to the St. Michael junction and on to Leoben. By lorry that takes about 13 hours including breaks – two drivers or an overnight stop are required. For your home move we also clarify the stopping place in front of the house. What we handle on a long-distance move to Leoben
Planning in Berlin, arrival on the Mur
We have no branch in Austria; instead we drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit right to your door in Leoben. Because the route takes longer than one day's driving time, we plan two drivers or an overnight stop and schedule the journey outside the driving bans. We pack, carry, transport and assemble; the Meldezettel is up to you. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. We give you the fixed price after the survey. If the scope does not change, the price stays exactly as stated in the quote.

Common questions
Formalities when moving to Austria
As Austria is part of the European Union, there is no customs declaration for your household goods when moving from Germany; customs forms only concern goods from non-EU countries. A simple list of boxes still helps when unloading and in case of damage. Within three days of moving in you register with the Meldezettel, in Leoben at the citizens' service office (Bürgerservice) in the town hall. If you stay longer than three months, you apply for the registration certificate for EU citizens within four months of entry. If your car is permanently based in Austria, it must be registered there; as a rule the standard consumption tax (Normverbrauchsabgabe, NoVA) is payable. Your German EU driving licence remains valid.
Leoben as a destination: a mining town in Upper Styria
After Graz, Leoben is the second-largest town in Styria and lies in the upper Mur valley, around eight kilometres east of St. Michael and 15 km west of Bruck an der Mur. The old town centre grew up in a bend of the Mur. The town has a long tradition in mining and metallurgy: the Donawitz district is home to a voestalpine plant, and Leoben is also the seat of the Montanuniversität and the centre of the Upper Styrian industrial region. The town comprises the localities of Leoben, Donawitz, Göß, Hinterberg, Judendorf and Leitendorf. We do not give specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition.
The price of your move
How much will my move cost? We are happy to answer this question directly: we move 1-room flats from €369, 2-room flats from €594, 3-room flats from €909 and 4-room flats from €1,324. If you live in a house or villa, you receive an individual quote from us, as the effort varies greatly here. If you need to go further afield, we charge from €4.10 per kilometre for long-distance moves. It is best to clarify all the details during a free survey.
What does the moving price depend on?
How much your move costs depends primarily on the volume of your household goods and the distance to be covered, which is calculated from €4.10/km. The floor and whether a lift can be used also play a role. If you need a parking restriction zone, this also has an effect. Furniture assembly and part load can be booked as options.

From Berlin to Leoben: lorry toll, driving bans and use of the road
Two sets of rules apply to the journey to Leoben. In Germany, § 30 StVO (Road Traffic Regulations) prohibits lorries over 7.5 t permissible total weight from commercial goods transport on Sundays and public holidays from 0:00 to 22:00. Removal traffic is not on the list of exemptions, so plan the journey on a weekday. In Austria, the GO toll is payable for motor vehicles over 3.5 tonnes technically permissible total weight. According to go-maut.at, it applies on motorways and expressways, is charged per kilometre driven and runs via the GO-Box, which should be set up before the journey. The SelfCare portal serves as an online account for managing the vehicles.
At the destination you should clarify the no-stopping zone for the removal van early on. In its service overview, the town of Leoben does not list a separate application for a "no-stopping zone for a move". It does, however, offer an online application for use of the road for non-traffic purposes and an application for exemptions from the Road Traffic Regulations in individual cases, both via the Amtsweg portal. For works and partial closures on municipal roads, the town names the department for building and road law and safety (Referat Bau- und Straßenrecht, Sicherheit), tel. +43 3842 4062-335. The town does not state lead time or costs on these pages, so ask about both in advance.
How we plan journeys abroad is described under International move.
Leoben: Meldezettel within three days, parking zones and bulky waste

The responsible office is the citizens' service office in the town hall, Erzherzog Johann-Straße 2, tel. +43 3842 4062-450. You should bring the fully completed Meldezettel signed by the accommodation provider and the person required to register, an official photo ID and your birth certificate, and foreign nationals also their travel document. Registration is free of charge. The citizens' service office is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 to 16:00 and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 to 12:00; the page does not mention a mandatory appointment.
Anyone living in one of Leoben's residents' zones (A town centre, B Waasen, C Judendorf) can apply for the residents' parking permit. According to the town it costs 98 euros per year and requires your main residence to be in the zone; copies of the vehicle registration certificate and the Meldezettel must be submitted.
For bulky waste, the town offers one collection per year per household: according to the town, it costs a transport fee of 24.85 euros, for a maximum of 5 m³, booked by phone on +43 3842 4062-367 on the Wednesday or Thursday of the previous week, with collection on Mondays. Alternatively, residents of Leoben can drop off bulky waste free of charge at the recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum), Am Wirtschaftspark 11 (Monday to Friday 7:00 to 16:30, Saturday 8:00 to 16:30).
