Leoben guide
Moving to Leoben: the bend of the Mur, Göß and Donawitz
Living in Upper Styria
After Graz, Leoben is the second-largest town in Styria and lies in the upper Mur valley. The old town centre grew up in a bend of the Mur; today the town extends across both banks. With the voestalpine plant in Donawitz, Leoben is one of the most important sites of the Austrian steel industry and home to the Montanuniversität (University of Leoben). The town comprises the localities of Leoben, Donawitz, Göß, Hinterberg, Judendorf and Leitendorf. For your home move we clarify in advance where the lorry can stop. If the scope does not change, the price stays exactly as stated in the quote. If the new flat is not yet free, we store your belongings temporarily in Berlin and deliver on the agreed date.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 856 km via Passau and the Pyhrn motorway to Leoben; by lorry that takes about 13 hours including breaks, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Within the EU there is no customs duty on your household goods. After moving in, you register within three days at the citizens' service office (Bürgerservice) in the town hall. We give you the fixed price after a survey. More on the route in the long-distance moving guide for Leoben. We answer frequently asked questions briefly and specifically further below. We plan the way back to Berlin in the same way.

What we handle on a move to Leoben
From Berlin to the Mur
We have no branch in Austria; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify in advance where the vehicle may stop – for public roads the town names a permit for special use, and for the Hauptplatz and Kirchplatz the City Management. We pack, carry, transport and assemble; the registration form (Meldezettel) is up to you. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); the route is already included in the fixed price.

We give you the fixed price for your move to Leoben after the survey – packing, transport, toll, a second driver and assembly appear in it as separate items. Dates at the end of the month are in demand, so an early enquiry pays off.

Part load: move affordably
A part load to Leoben bundles several small jobs in one lorry that travels the route via Passau to Styria. This lowers the cost per cubic metre but requires flexibility on the delivery day – often the cheapest solution for single pieces of furniture.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Leoben
The localities of Leoben at a glance
Leoben is divided into six localities. The centre, Leoben, with the Hauptplatz and the old town, lies in the bend of the Mur; then there is Donawitz with the voestalpine steelworks. Göß is known for its abbey of the same name and its brewery, and there are also Hinterberg, Judendorf and Leitendorf. For residents' parking permits, the town is divided into zones such as the town centre, Waasen and Judendorf. For the move, the areas differ mainly in access and stopping place: around the Hauptplatz and Kirchplatz it is tight, while on the outskirts there is more space in front of the house. Which area suits you depends on your commute, school and budget.
Montanuniversität, work and everyday life in Leoben
The Montanuniversität Leoben is known for mining, metallurgy and materials. Major employers are the voestalpine plant in Donawitz, the university, the district administration and courts, as well as retail and healthcare. Leoben is the southern starting point of the Austrian Iron Road (Eisenstraße). We do not give specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition; compare current offers on Austrian portals. It is best to plan giving notice in Berlin, the Meldezettel within three days and, if applicable, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) after three months backwards from moving-in day. If the flat is not yet free, we store your furniture temporarily in Berlin.
Price transparency for your move
How much a move costs depends heavily on the size of the flat: we move a 1-room flat from €339, for a 2-room flat prices start at €615, for a 3-room flat from €915 and for a 4-room flat from €1,309. For a house or villa we prepare an individual quote for you. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.85/km. It is best to book a free survey straight away.

More routes from Berlin
We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), including to Austria. The Long-distance moves page describes long routes, and the locations overview shows places with their own pages. We plan the way back to Berlin in exactly the same way.
Leoben: clarifying public road space for the removal van
A removal van that occupies road space in Leoben quickly touches on several responsibilities. The town of Leoben states on its website that a permit for special use (Bewilligung zur Sondernutzung) is required for using public land or roads for non-traffic purposes. This page contains no specific reference to moves or removal vans, nor does it state lead times or fees. So ask early whether a permit or a no-stopping zone is needed for your address.
As contact points for special use, the town names:
- for all other uses, the department for building and road law and safety (Referat Bau- und Straßenrecht, Sicherheit; telephone +43 3842 4062-335, [email protected])
- for the Hauptplatz and Kirchplatz, the City Management
- in general, the citizens' service office in the town hall, Erzherzog Johann-Straße 2 (telephone +43 3842 4062-450)
Anyone parking their own vehicle in the Green Zone or short-stay parking zone will also find the online applications for parking permits on the town's website. These pages say nothing about reserved space for removal vans.
For the enquiry, have the address, date, time, approximate vehicle length and the required standing area ready; this makes it quicker for the town to assess which arrangement is needed. We check during the survey which access, carrying distances and standing place your address in Leoben requires. Only then do we set the price. How we organise stopping options is described under Parking restriction zone.
Leoben after moving in: Meldezettel, citizens' service and bulky waste
In Austria you register your new residence within three days of moving in. According to the town of Leoben, the citizens' service office in the town hall is responsible for this; registration is free of charge. You need a fully completed Meldezettel, which the accommodation provider also signs, an official photo ID and your birth certificate, and if applicable your old Meldezettel. Foreign nationals also present a travel document. If you prefer, you can register online via the registration portal on oesterreich.gv.at or by post.
The citizens' service office is open on Monday and Thursday from 8:00 to 16:00 and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 12:00, and additionally by appointment. For your first period in the town, the advice centre "LE Kompass" offers support for newcomers.
If bulky items accumulate during the move, the town of Leoben names a chargeable collection: households can have bulky waste collected once a year, with prior registration with the department for waste, wastewater and environmental management. Collection takes place on Mondays, and according to the town the transport fee is €24.85. Only furniture, mattresses and scrap metal are collected, up to a maximum of 5 m³ per collection. Alternatively, you can take bulky items to the Leoben recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum) yourself.
