Duisburg guide
Moving to Duisburg – Your City Where the Rhine Meets the Ruhr
Step by step
Duisburg lies where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine and has around half a million inhabitants. The port – today duisport – is one of the largest inland ports in Europe and makes the city an important logistics location. Anyone moving to Duisburg for work or personal reasons usually finds cheaper housing than in Düsseldorf or Cologne and is still quickly in the Rhineland. The seven boroughs stretch from Walsum in the north to the Sechs-Seen-Platte (Six Lakes area) in the south. We plan your move from the survey to the last box – with an eye on the floor, access and parking space.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 547 km via the A2, the Oberhausen interchange, the A3 and the A59 to Duisburg; by lorry, that is about eight hours including breaks. Whether a period building in Neudorf, a flat at the Innenhafen or a house in Rheinhausen on the left bank of the Rhine: we quote the fixed price after the survey. We also plan the return journey from Duisburg to Berlin, as well as interim storage if moving out and moving in do not fall on the same day. The route in detail: Moving Berlin – Duisburg.

Secure your fixed-price move to Duisburg
Fixed price after a survey, liability under the HGB
With our fixed price, you know before the move what it will cost – no timesheets, no surcharges for the floor or route. It is based on a survey of your flat. We are liable for damage under § 451e HGB, and valuable items can be insured additionally. Request your quote for the move to Duisburg: 01625978461.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Your move to Duisburg: what we do
From Moabit to your door in Duisburg
We have no branch in Duisburg; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a period building in Duissern, a former miners' estate in Hamborn or a detached house in Großenbaum. We apply in good time for a parking restriction in front of the new address according to the city's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of loading space, and additional insurance is available for valuable items. We coordinate the date with the handover of the flat.

Moving
& transport from one provider
A move to Duisburg has a few special features. In densely built-up neighbourhoods such as Duisburg-Mitte or Neudorf, a parking restriction is often needed for the removal van, which we apply for in good time. You complete registration at a Bürger-Service-Station or online – within 14 days and free of charge. For the journey, the A3, A40 and A59 matter, especially at rush hour. We take care of the process on moving day.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Duisburg
Duisburg's districts at a glance
Duisburg is divided into seven boroughs with very different characters. Neudorf and Duissern are considered upmarket, green residential areas with good infrastructure and are particularly popular with families and students. The historic district of Ruhrort delights with its maritime flair right by the port and is increasingly developing into a cultural quarter. If you prefer things quieter, Großenbaum or Wedau, near the Sechs-Seen-Platte, offer plenty of green space and recreation on your doorstep.
In the north of Duisburg, Hamborn and Walsum offer affordable housing with an industrial past, while Rheinhausen on the left bank of the Rhine is considered an up-and-coming residential area with good connections to Düsseldorf. The Innenhafen (inner harbour) in the heart of the city has developed in recent years into a modern residential and office location with a loft character. Whichever district you choose – we plan access and floor in advance for every private move.
Housing, employers and quality of life in Duisburg
Housing in Duisburg is usually cheaper than in Düsseldorf or Cologne; sought-after areas such as Neudorf or Duissern are higher. As a place to work, Duisburg scores with large companies such as thyssenkrupp Steel, the Haniel Group and the logistics giant duisport, one of the largest inland ports in Europe. The University of Duisburg-Essen, with its Duisburg campus, also attracts thousands of students and young professionals to the city every year.
For leisure and recreation, there is the popular Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, the Sechs-Seen-Platte and Duisburg Zoo with its well-known dolphinarium. Its central location in the Ruhr area also makes Duisburg an ideal base for commuters to Düsseldorf, Essen or the wider Rhineland. This mix of affordable housing, strong employers and high quality of life is making Duisburg the first choice for more and more people.
Honest prices, honest work
We believe in fair and transparent prices. That is why our moves start at €354 for 1-room flats, €605 for 2-room flats, €879 for 3-room flats and €1,269 for 4-room flats. For houses or villas, we always draw up an individual quote, and we charge long-distance moves transparently from €3.90/km. Trust comes from transparency – arrange a free survey.
Understanding moving prices
Whether a move turns out cheaper or more expensive depends on the volume, the distance (from €3.90/km) and the floor. A lift can lower the costs, and a parking restriction zone makes loading and unloading easier. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load round off the offer.

Registration after moving to Duisburg: deadline, fee and online service
According to duisburg.de, anyone moving to Duisburg must register or re-register "within 14 days" (§ 17 (1) Federal Registration Act). Registration is "free of charge", both at the Bürger-Service-Station (citizens' service point) and online. The city lists these requirements for the online service:
- German or EU/EEA citizenship
- an identity card with the online function activated, plus PIN (EU citizens: eID card), and the federal AusweisApp
- a BundID account, which can be set up via eID
- a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) for rented flats; when moving from another city, also a civil status certificate
According to the city, foreign nationals with a residence requirement for another city must first apply for it to be removed. The service runs via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de, and you receive the sticker for your ID card by post. You then change the address in your vehicle registration certificate (ZB I) separately via iKFZ or at the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt). According to the city, foreign nationals who cannot use the online service register at the Bürger-Service and should book an appointment online.
For moving day itself, a parking restriction in front of the building is sensible. The road traffic authorities are responsible under § 45 StVO; clarify directly with the city in advance how the City of Duisburg takes the application. On request, we take care of the application and signage – see parking restriction zone.
Duisburg's boroughs and district administration offices at a glance
Duisburg is divided into seven boroughs, to which the city assigns district administration offices (BVS) by postcode. According to duisburg.de, these are:
- Walsum: 47169, 47178, 47179
- Hamborn: 47166, 47167, 47169
- Meiderich: 47119 (Laar), 47137, 47138, 47139, 47166
- Homberg: 47119 (Ruhrort), 47198, 47199
- Mitte: 47051, 47053, 47055, 47057, 47058, 47059
- Rheinhausen: 47226, 47228, 47229, 47239
- Süd: 47249, 47259, 47269, 47279
On request by email or post, the BVS handle, among other things, registration certificates, information from the population register and property information for owners. This is practical if you need proof quickly after registering, for example for contracts. For general questions, you can reach the city on 0203 94000 (Mon to Fri 8:00 to 16:00, Sat 9:00 to 13:00).
Registration itself is not handled by the BVS but at a Bürger-Service-Station or online; according to the city, foreign nationals register at the Bürger-Service, and you book appointments for this online. Which postcode belongs to your new flat can be seen in the list above; that way you know which borough is responsible for you. What housing and everyday life look like in the boroughs can be read in the guide for newcomers. If you are moving from Berlin, you will find our offer on the page Removal company Duisburg.
