Everything important about moving in Duisburg
We plan moves in all seven city districts, from Mitte with the Altstadt and Dellviertel through Rheinhausen and Homberg/Ruhrort/Baerl to Hamborn, Meiderich/Beeck and Walsum.
How a move in Duisburg works
Praktik Transport und Umzüge plans your move in Duisburg from Berlin-Moabit, with an eye on the city's particular traffic and urban structures. Duisburg lies at the confluence of the Rhine and the Ruhr; the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports are regarded as the largest inland port in the world. Port and logistics traffic brings a lot of heavy goods vehicles, which we take into account when planning the route for your household move.
Several motorways run through the city: the A3 connects Duisburg with Oberhausen and on towards Cologne, the A40 (Ruhrschnellweg) leads through the city to Essen and Bochum, the A42 serves the north towards Gelsenkirchen, and the A59 links Duisburg with Düsseldorf. At peak times there are regular traffic jams on the A40 and at the Neuenkamp Rhine bridge, so wherever possible we schedule arrival and loading outside the rush hour.
Within the city, many streets in areas such as the Altstadt or the Dellviertel are densely built up. Here we plan compact vehicles or short carrying distances with a parking restriction. Tram and bus lines operated by DVG also affect access to individual buildings, for example around König-Heinrich-Platz.
For flat clearances in older buildings, for example in Hamborn or Meiderich, we also offer our clearance service. Our team travels around 547 kilometres from Stromstraße 21 – so you receive all services for your move in Duisburg from a single source, from the first survey to the last box.
Seven city districts: residential areas in Duisburg
Duisburg is divided into seven city districts, each with its own character – which makes every move in Duisburg individual. In the Mitte district with the Altstadt, Dellviertel and Neudorf, late-19th-century apartment buildings with narrow streets and few private parking spaces dominate. The Süd district with Wedau, Buchholz, Bissingheim and Wanheimerort has quieter residential streets, detached houses and plenty of greenery around the Sportpark Duisburg.
On the left bank of the Rhine lies Rheinhausen, shaped by structural change after the closure of the Krupp steelworks in 1993. Homberg, Ruhrort and Baerl form a district of their own on the Rhine; Ruhrort is known for its port. In the north are Hamborn and Meiderich/Beeck with dense housing and an industrial history; in Meiderich the Rhine-Herne Canal begins at the lock of the same name. Walsum is the northernmost city district and lies on the Rhine.
Neighbouring cities also play a role in many moves: anyone moving from Duisburg to Oberhausen, Essen or Krefeld benefits from short distances between both addresses on the same day.
| City district | Character | Parking situation |
|---|---|---|
| Mitte (Altstadt, Dellviertel) | Urban, densely built-up | Tight, parking restriction often advisable |
| Süd (Wedau, Buchholz) | Quiet, green, detached houses | Usually enough parking space |
| Rheinhausen | Left bank of the Rhine, changing | Moderate, depending on the street |
| Homberg/Ruhrort/Baerl | On the Rhine, port | Limited near the port |
| Hamborn/Meiderich-Beeck | Dense, industrial history | Tight, resident parking |
| Walsum | Northernmost district on the Rhine | Usually good |
What a move in Duisburg costs
Moving costs in Duisburg depend on the size of the flat, the floor, the distance between the old and new address and any additional services you want. The following guide values serve as a rough orientation for a household move within Duisburg or to the surrounding area:
| Flat size | Price from |
|---|---|
| 1-room flat | €354 |
| 2-room flat | €615 |
| 3-room flat | €905 |
These values are starting prices for a standard move with loading and unloading, transport and basic assembly. The actual final price is influenced by several factors:
- The floor and whether there is a lift, for example in the period buildings of Duisburg's Altstadt
- The distance between the loading point and the new flat, e.g. within Duisburg or to neighbouring cities such as Oberhausen
- Additional effort for clearing out old cellars, see our clearance service
- Transport of special items such as pianos, see piano transport
- The need for a parking restriction zone in narrow inner-city streets
For an individual, non-binding quote we recommend a short survey on site or by video, so that we can realistically assess the scope of your move in Duisburg.
Parking and parking restrictions in Duisburg's neighbourhoods
Especially in densely built-up areas such as Duisburg's Altstadt, the Dellviertel or around the Innenhafen, space for the removal van is often in short supply. Narrow one-way streets, resident parking and the traffic around the main station make loading and unloading even harder. That is why a parking restriction zone right outside the door makes sense for many moves in Duisburg.
Which office at the City of Duisburg is responsible and how much lead time it requires is best asked directly via the city's service telephone (see below). During the survey we tell you whether a parking restriction is advisable at your address, how long the zone should be and when the signs need to be up. This saves time, reduces trouble with wrongly parked cars and spares your back, because long carrying distances are avoided.
Our price list states 30 to 100 euros per day for a parking restriction zone, depending on location, length and duration. Around König-Heinrich-Platz or in Ruhrort with its harbour streets, early planning is particularly important, as the official permit needs lead time.
- Reserved parking space right outside the front door
- Shorter carrying distances and a faster process
- Fewer conflicts with residents
- Submit the application to the city in good time
Talk to us early so that the parking restriction zone is in place in good time before your moving date in Duisburg.
From Duisburg to Essen, Dortmund or Berlin
Besides moves within the Ruhr area, we also plan long-distance moves from Duisburg. From Duisburg to our location on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 547 road kilometres, mostly via the A2 – a route we calculate with a fixed arrival window and sufficient breaks, in both directions.
Within North Rhine-Westphalia, too, many destinations are easy to reach via the dense motorway network: via the A40 and A42 to Bochum, Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund, further east Hagen and Hamm. To the south lie Wuppertal and Bonn. All of these cities have their own location page.
For smaller volumes or individual pieces of furniture, a part load is often worthwhile: your belongings travel together with other transports on the same route, which is particularly economical for students or commuters between Duisburg and other cities.
For a long-distance move from Duisburg our price list states from 4.15 euros per kilometre, depending on the volume, floor and staff; the binding figure is the fixed price after a survey. We factor roadworks on the Ruhr motorways and congestion at the Rhine crossings into the planning so that your belongings arrive within the agreed time window.
Services for your move in Duisburg
For your move in Duisburg, we as a Berlin moving company offer a comprehensive range of services, tailored to this Ruhr city. Whether a period flat in the Dellviertel, a detached house in Rheinhausen or company premises at the Innenhafen – we adapt our moving teams flexibly to the property and its location.
- Household move – from packing to assembling furniture in the new flat
- Company move – for offices, practices and businesses in Duisburg and the surrounding area
- Part load – affordable transport of smaller volumes
- Clearance – for cellars, attics and complete household clearances
- Parking restriction zone – planned for tight inner-city locations
- Piano transport – proper transport of upright and grand pianos
- Senior move – considerate moving for older people, for example in Walsum or Homberg
- Student move – specially for students of the University of Duisburg-Essen
Each of these services can be booked individually or combined as needed. Especially for moves between different city districts, for example from Meiderich to Süd or from Hamborn to Rheinhausen, we check access routes, parking options and any lift situation in advance so that moving day runs smoothly.
Our aim is to make a stress-free move in Duisburg possible for you – with clear agreements, fair prices and a team that clarifies access and parking in advance for every address.
Office and company moves between the Innenhafen and Logport
Duisburg is an important business location in the Ruhr area, shaped by the Port of Duisburg, logistics companies in the Logport business park and steel and industrial firms around Hamborn and Bruckhausen. For companies moving within the city or out of Duisburg, we offer a structured company move designed for minimal downtime.
Whether an office floor in the city centre, a practice in Neudorf or a warehouse near the Innenhafen – we draw up a detailed moving plan in advance that takes IT infrastructure, file logistics and furniture dismantling into account. Especially for businesses connected to the port or to Logport sites, we coordinate delivery times closely with ongoing operations and the heavy goods traffic in the area.
- Move planning with a timeline and responsibilities
- Dismantling and assembly of office furniture and server cabinets
- Safe transport of files, equipment and archive material
- Scheduling outside core working hours possible
- Coordination with property managers in office buildings in Duisburg city centre
We plan a parking restriction zone outside office buildings, for example on Königstraße or at the Innenhafen, early on so that vans can load and unload without obstruction. Larger volumes or interim storage are planned together with you and set out in the quote.
Talk to us early – ideally several weeks before the planned date – so that we can carry out your company move in Duisburg in a structured way and with as little business interruption as possible.
Student moves at the Duisburg campus & booking
As a location of the University of Duisburg-Essen with its Duisburg campus, the city attracts numerous students every semester who move between halls of residence, shared flats and student apartments. For this group we offer a special student move with a lean process and fair terms, often combined with a part load when only a few pieces of furniture and boxes need to be transported.
Many students move within Duisburg, for example from a hall of residence near the campus towards Neudorf or the Dellviertel, or commute between Duisburg and other university cities in the region. The following generally applies to the process and booking of a move with us:
- Get in touch by phone, email or online form with rough details on flat size and floor
- Free assessment of the effort, with a short video survey if needed
- Binding quote with a transparent price structure, based on our guide values from 354 euros
- Scheduling, including applying for a parking restriction zone if needed
- Carrying out the move on the agreed day, including loading and unloading
We recommend that students book early, especially at the start and end of the semester, when many shared flats in Duisburg move at the same time and parking space and lift capacity become scarce. For senior citizens who want to move into a smaller flat in Duisburg, we also have a suitable, considerate offer with our senior move.
Re-registration in Duisburg: online or at the Bürger-Service-Station
After moving in, the City of Duisburg says you must register or re-register within 14 days (§ 17 Abs. 1 BMG). Registration at the Bürger-Service-Station and online is free of charge. Online it runs via the wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de service, which according to the city can be used around the clock.
For online registration you need an ID document with the online ID function activated plus PIN, an NFC-enabled smartphone or a card reader, the federal AusweisApp and a BundID account. If you rent, the city requires the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung); if you own, additionally proof of ownership as long as the entry in the land register is missing. Anyone moving in from another city should have a civil status certificate (Personenstandsurkunde) ready, according to the city. You receive the sticker for your ID card by post at the new address.
The city allocates on-site appointments through the Bürgerservicestationen booking system; the appointment page lists seven administrative offices: Walsum, Hamborn, Meiderich, Homberg, Mitte, Rheinhausen and Süd. Important for vehicles: for a move within Duisburg, the change of address in the vehicle documents is made in person at a Bürger-Service-Station, according to the city, and the change via iKFZ is only possible after re-registration.
Whether a parking restriction makes sense for your street on moving day is something we clarify together with you in advance, see parking restriction zone.
Parking and moving in Duisburg: resident parking permit and port city
On its business portal, Duisburg describes itself as the largest inland port in the world and a logistics hub for Europe. For your move this mainly means: we should know the location and access of your address before the date, especially for company moves in commercial and port areas. If you need an appointment at one of the seven administrative offices after the move, it is best to book it as soon as the moving date is confirmed. When you enquire, describe the floor, lift, carrying distances and the parking situation outside the building, and we will calculate your quote on that basis.
Anyone moving into a different resident parking zone within Duisburg has to update their resident parking permit. According to the City of Duisburg, the zone change due to a move is currently only possible in person on site, with payment by card. The responsible office is the Planning, Building and Transport advice centre (Beratungsstelle Planen, Bauen und Verkehr) in the Stadthaus (entrance Moselstraße), Friedrich-Albert-Lange-Platz 7, 47051 Duisburg; appointments are currently required and can be booked online.
For general questions you can reach the City of Duisburg, according to its website, on 0203 94000 (Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm, Saturday 9 am to 1 pm). You will find further information on neighbourhoods and costs in our moving guide for Duisburg and in the guide for newcomers Living in Duisburg.
