Key answers for your move in Düsseldorf
The costs depend on the size of the flat, the floor and the distance. A 1-room flat starts at 339 euros, a 2-room flat from 609 euros and a 3-room flat from 889 euros. For an exact quote we recommend a free survey.
How a move in Düsseldorf works
Praktik Transport und Umzüge plans your move in Düsseldorf from the first survey to the last box – from Berlin-Moabit, where our company is based at Stromstraße 21. The state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia has around 619,000 inhabitants, ten districts and 50 neighbourhoods and brings its own challenges: narrow lanes in the old town, heavy traffic around the Königsallee and one-way streets in neighbourhoods such as Pempelfort or Flingern.
For a smooth private move, the process starts with a free survey by video or by arrangement. During this we record the floors, lift, parking options and special items such as pianos or artworks. You then receive a fixed-price quote and a date that takes traffic and the parking restriction into account.
Düsseldorf lies on the A3, A44, A46, A52 and A59 motorways. Around the trade fair, Düsseldorf Airport and the Rhine bridges there are traffic jams at peak times, which we factor into the schedule. On moving day we dismantle and reassemble the furniture, protect floors and stairwells and transport your belongings to the new address.
Whether you are moving within Oberkassel, from the old town to Golzheim or from a suburb to Bilk – we clarify access and parking in advance for both addresses. This avoids waiting times and ensures that your move in Düsseldorf runs on schedule.
Ten districts: places to live in Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf is divided into ten districts with 50 neighbourhoods of very different character, which has a direct effect on planning a move. In the Altstadt (old town) and Carlstadt we find narrow historic lanes and pedestrian zones, while Oberkassel on the left bank of the Rhine, with its Gründerzeit period buildings, often comes with narrow stairwells and no lift. Pempelfort and Derendorf have busy residential streets with high parking pressure; a parking restriction zone is often advisable here.
South of the city centre lie Bilk, home to Heinrich Heine University, and Unterbilk, with a mix of student flats and new builds near the Medienhafen. Flingern is a popular trendy neighbourhood where narrow streets and limited loading zones can make access difficult. Things are quieter in Golzheim on the Rhine or in historic Kaiserswerth in the north.
- Benrath: neighbourhood with a palace and palace park in the south, often a more relaxed parking situation
- Gerresheim: a mix of period buildings and new builds in the east
- Eller and Wersten: plenty of housing for families, easy to reach with larger removal vans
- Garath: large housing estate in the south with high-rises and lifts
Depending on the location, we adapt the vehicle size, crew size and the need for a parking restriction zone. We clarify access and parking for every address during the survey – from Kaiserswerth in the north to Benrath in the south – so that your move runs without unpleasant surprises, whichever neighbourhood you live in or are moving to.
What a move in Düsseldorf costs
The cost of a move in Düsseldorf depends on several factors: the size of the flat, distance, floor, lift situation and additional services needed, such as clearance or a part load. We calculate transparently and without hidden costs so that you can plan your budget reliably from the start.
| Flat size | Price from | Example neighbourhoods |
|---|---|---|
| 1-room flat | €339 | Bilk, Flingern, Derendorf |
| 2-room flat | €609 | Pempelfort, Unterbilk, Eller |
| 3-room flat | €889 | Oberkassel, Golzheim, Gerresheim |
| Long-distance move | from €3.90/km | e.g. towards Berlin |
These prices are guide values for moves with average effort. Additional factors such as a piano, bulky furniture or a narrow stairwell in the old town can affect the price – we always discuss this openly in advance during the survey.
The parking situation also plays a role: in densely built neighbourhoods such as Flingern or Pempelfort, we often recommend a parking restriction zone to minimise waiting and carrying times – in the end this often saves more money than it costs. For students and smaller moves we also offer affordable flat rates, which are particularly suitable for moves around Heinrich Heine University. Contact us for an individual, free quote – we are happy to prepare a tailored calculation based on your specific moving situation in Düsseldorf.
Parking and parking restrictions in Düsseldorf's neighbourhoods
Parking is one of the biggest challenges for moves in Düsseldorf. Especially in the old town, around the Königsallee and in densely populated neighbourhoods such as Pempelfort, Flingern or Bilk, free parking is scarce; one-way streets and pedestrian zones further restrict access.
So that no time is lost looking for a parking space on moving day, a parking restriction zone right outside your door is worthwhile. The permit is issued by the traffic management office; the city does not put up the signs itself – they come from removal firms or roadworks service companies. Our price list states 30 to 100 euros per day for a parking restriction zone, depending on the zone and duration; the municipal fee is added.
- Shorter carrying distances and a faster process
- Cars parked in the zone can be towed if the signs were put up on time
- Signage in line with the city's requirements
- Particularly useful in the old town, Oberkassel and Unterbilk
In neighbourhoods with narrow streets such as Flingern, a parking restriction zone is particularly worthwhile, as there is often only narrow access. For moves into the Garath housing estate, too, a reserved loading zone keeps the distance to the lift short and the move progressing quickly.
As a rule, the application in Düsseldorf needs 14 days' notice; according to the city, shorter deadlines incur an urgent fee (see below). Talk to us early – we will tell you the length and period of the zone so that the application is submitted in time and your moving day in Düsseldorf runs smoothly.
From Düsseldorf to the Ruhr area, Cologne or Berlin
Düsseldorf lies in the Rhineland and is connected to the trunk road network via the A3, A44, A46, A52 and A59 motorways. This also makes the city a good starting point for long-distance moves – within North Rhine-Westphalia or to other federal states.
From Düsseldorf to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 558 road kilometres; we plan this route in both directions with a fixed arrival window. Duisburg, Essen, Bochum, Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen also have their own location page, as do Krefeld, Bonn, Hagen, Bielefeld in Westphalia and Hamm.
For long distances, our price list states from 3.90 euros per kilometre, depending on the goods, floor and vehicle; the fixed price after a survey is binding. For smaller volumes or single pieces of furniture there is the part load, where your goods travel together with other consignments – suitable for students or smaller households that do not need a complete removal van.
We plan the route taking into account the driver's driving and rest periods and favourable traffic times, so that your move from Düsseldorf arrives on time and safely.
Services for your move in Düsseldorf
For your move in Düsseldorf, we as a Berlin moving company offer a comprehensive range of services for private and business customers. From classic household liquidation to transporting valuable instruments – every aspect of moving is covered.
- Private move: Full service from packing to furniture assembly
- Office move: Moving offices, practices and shops with minimal downtime
- Piano transport: Transport of upright and grand pianos with our own securing equipment
- Senior move: Considerate support when moving in later life or into a senior residence
- Clearance: Household liquidations and disposal of items no longer needed
- Part load: Affordable transport of smaller volumes
- Student move: Quick, affordable moves for students of HHU and other higher-education institutions
- Parking restriction zone: Planning the application and signage for a smooth process
We bring blankets, straps and protective materials for furniture and carefully pack artworks or sensitive electronics. Especially in period flats in Oberkassel or Golzheim with narrow stairwells, we plan enough staff for this.
We clarify the traffic situation, parking rules and access for the neighbourhoods concerned before the date. This makes your move quick and gentle on your belongings – whether a small single flat or a large detached house.
Office and company moves between the Medienhafen and Seestern
Düsseldorf is of great importance as a business location in NRW: numerous companies, law firms and agencies are based in the Medienhafen, along the Kö or in the office districts around the main station. A company move places special demands on planning and execution, as operations should be interrupted as little as possible.
We handle the complete move of your office, practice or shop – from dismantling the IT infrastructure and transporting filing cabinets to setting everything up again at the new site. By arrangement we work in the evening or at the weekend so as to disturb ongoing business as little as possible.
- Moving server rooms and IT equipment with particular care
- Dismantling and assembly of office furniture and partitions
- Labelling and inventory for orderly reassembly
- Discreet handling, including for sensitive sectors such as law firms
Especially in the Medienhafen and in the office complexes Am Seestern, loading zones are limited and lifts are often heavily used – here we deliberately plan time slots outside peak times. For high-rises with their own access rules, we clarify delivery and lift use with the property management in advance.
For companies with several sites in the region – for example with branches in Duisburg or Essen – we also coordinate long-distance company moves from one source. Get in touch: we will draw up an individual moving plan tailored exactly to the size and structure of your company.
Student moves around Heinrich Heine University and booking
With Heinrich Heine University and several universities of applied sciences, Düsseldorf is an important higher-education location. Many students move within the city every semester – for example from a hall of residence in Bilk to a shared flat in Flingern or Derendorf. Our student move service is tailored specifically to small budgets and short-notice dates.
We offer affordable flat rates for room moves, flexible scheduling including at weekends and the option of a part load if only a few pieces of furniture need to be transported. This keeps the move stress-free and affordable even on a small budget.
Booking a move with Praktik Transport und Umzüge is straightforward:
- Send an enquiry: Fill in the online form or call us
- Survey: Free on-site or video survey to assess the work involved
- Receive a quote: Transparent, binding quote without hidden costs
- Fix the date: Book your preferred date, including a parking restriction zone if needed
- Carry out the move: Our team takes care of packing, transport and reassembly
For students we recommend booking early, especially at the start of semester in April and October, when many moves in Düsseldorf take place at the same time and parking spaces and removal vans are in high demand. A parking restriction zone set up at short notice can also make things considerably easier in busy student neighbourhoods such as Bilk or Unterbilk.
Contact us by phone or via our online form – we will get back to you with an individual quote for your move in Düsseldorf.
Parking restrictions when moving in Düsseldorf: application to the traffic management office
In Düsseldorf, the exemption permits department of the traffic management office (Amt für Verkehrsmanagement) issues permits for parking restrictions for moves. The address is Auf’m Hennekamp 45, 40225 Düsseldorf. According to the city's service portal, the application can be made informally; you can submit it online or hand it in in person, but not by phone. You must state your name and address, the location of the signs, the area covered (carriageway or verge) and the day of the week and time.
The city states the deadlines and fees as follows:
- Standard case: 14 days' notice, administrative fee 35 euros.
- Since 1 June 2026, shorter deadlines have also been possible: with 2 to 13 days' notice, the urgent fee is 70 euros.
- The city does not accept applications with less than two administrative working days' notice.
The office does not put up the signs itself. According to the city, you can hire them from removal firms or roadworks service companies or have them put up by those companies. Queries go to [email protected] or 0211 89-23602. The fee can be paid on invoice.
According to the city, applications are permitted for home moves, goods deliveries and loading and unloading. Site set-ups, skips and scaffolding are not covered and are rejected without review.
Our service for this can be found under parking restriction zone, and costs and process in the moving guide for Düsseldorf.
Residents' parking areas in Düsseldorf: Altstadt, Derendorf, Unterbilk and Oberkassel
According to the traffic management office, Düsseldorf has around 50 residents' parking areas, each with a name and a letter code. According to the city, these include, for example, Altstadt (A), Derendorf (Q), Friedrichstadt (N), Unterbilk (R), Oberkassel-Ost (OK) and Oberkassel-West (Z). There is also an area for Pempelfort: the Pempelforter Straße zone (P), which includes the street Alt Pempelfort. Other areas are called, for example, Unterrath, Kaiserswerth, Stockum-Blumenviertel or Wersten – Düsseldörfchen. The city publishes the full list on its website.
For your move this means: in densely built areas with regulated parking, you should clarify early where the removal van will stand. The following points help with planning:
- Note the street and house number exactly, as the areas are defined by street lists.
- Plan the space for the van and the carrying routes together.
- Apply for the permit in good time so that the signs are in place on time.
According to the city, residents' parking permits are issued by the residents' registration office. You can apply online and pay electronically. If you come in person, you need an appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro). The traffic management office no longer issues permits, but it does plan the areas.
How to settle in well is explained in Living in Düsseldorf. For neighbouring cities, see Cologne and Duisburg.
