From Moabit to the three-country border
Moving in the imperial city of Aachen
Long journey, fixed date
Our base is Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; we do not have a branch in Aachen. For every move, the team travels around 635 road kilometres with the lorry; that is why we plan an old building by the cathedral, a shared flat on Pontstraße or a house in Brand with a fixed arrival window and a clear loading time.
In Aachen, you receive a fixed price after a survey by video or by arrangement, with every item listed and a fixed contact person. You book packing help, assembly or a part load only if you need them – this keeps the effort and costs manageable and the move easy to plan.

Important answers for your move in Aachen
Concise answers on moving, the parking restriction and cross-border moves in Aachen – with the city's information, helpful for planning, the process and costs.
A move in Aachen starts from just 354 euros for a 1-room flat, from 605 euros for a 2-room flat and from 894 euros for a 3-room flat. The exact price depends on the floor, access and additional services such as a parking restriction zone.
Moving in Aachen: the process in the three-country region
A move in Aachen differs markedly from a move in an ordinary city, because the former imperial city lies right in the three-country region (Dreiländereck) between Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This location raises questions of its own, which our team from Praktik Transport und Umzüge in Berlin clarifies with you in advance. The city is served by the A4 (Aachen–Cologne) and A44 (Aachen–Düsseldorf/Kassel) motorways and the short A544 straight into the city centre – important routes for our removal vehicles to get there.
Within the city, the historic Alleenring shapes the traffic routing around the city centre. Anyone who lives in the Altstadt around the cathedral, the market and Pontstraße knows the narrow, partly cobbled lanes that large removal vans can hardly drive through. Here a smaller van or transferring the load may be necessary – we clarify this during the survey so that the furniture reaches the front door safely.
Because our team travels from Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit, we plan every move in Aachen with a buffer for the around 635 road kilometres via the A2, A1 and A4; with the lorry, that is about nine hours including a break. For you, this means binding dates and clear communication, even if there are jams on the Cologne ring road. Whether it is a private move within the city, a move from the surrounding area or a move to Aachen from elsewhere in Germany – we decide on vehicle size, team size and travel times after the survey.
Student life is also one of the local features: with RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen, the city is young, and many moves take place at the start or end of semester, which leads to increased demand for parking space and parking restriction zones.
7 city districts: residential areas in Aachen
Aachen is divided into seven city districts with very different residential character, which plays an important role in planning a move. For a smooth move in Aachen, we take into account the access routes, parking situation and building types individually.
- Aachen-Mitte: historic Altstadt with narrow lanes around the cathedral and the Elisenbrunnen, many old flats without a lift
- Burtscheid: quiet residential area with Gründerzeit buildings and a thermal spring tradition
- Brand: sought-after neighbourhood in the east with detached houses and good access to the A44
- Eilendorf: city district in the east with housing estates and terraced houses
- Haaren: green neighbourhood in the north close to the A44 and Aachen-Nord
- Richterich: near the Dutch border, many new builds and detached houses
- Laurensberg: borders Vaals (NL), popular with families and RWTH staff
- Forst and Kornelimünster/Walheim: rural neighbourhoods with historic half-timbered structures
People moving in from the surrounding area often come from Düren, Eschweiler, Stolberg or Herzogenrath – we cover these routes too. In the densely built city-centre areas such as the Pontviertel or the Frankenberger Viertel, applying for a parking restriction zone is often essential, while in outlying areas such as Brand or Richterich there is usually enough private parking. For older buildings without a lift, which are common in Burtscheid and the Altstadt, we allow extra time for carrying items up and down the stairs.
Moving costs in Aachen: prices and influencing factors
The moving costs in Aachen depend on the flat size, floor, distance and additional services. The following overview of our guide prices for a classic private move within the city serves as orientation:
| Flat size | Guide price from | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1-room flat | €354 | Student apartment on Pontstraße |
| 2-room flat | €605 | Old flat in Burtscheid |
| 3-room flat | €894 | Family flat in Brand or Eilendorf |
| Long-distance move (nationwide) | from €3.80/km | Aachen–Berlin, Aachen–Cologne, Aachen–Düsseldorf |
| Parking restriction zone | €30–100/day | City centre, Pontviertel, Frankenberger Viertel |
Additional cost factors are missing lifts in old buildings, long carrying distances in narrow Altstadt streets and additional services such as a packing service, clearing the cellar and loft or the careful transport of a piano. For students, we offer affordable flat rates for small student moves, while special terms apply to older people for a calm, well-planned senior move. A free, no-obligation quote always takes the specific situation on site into account – from the narrow lane in the Altstadt to the new build in Richterich.
Parking restriction zone & parking for your move in Aachen
Anyone moving in Aachen's city centre knows the problem: scarce parking, narrow one-way streets and a historic street layout that was not designed for modern moving logistics. Especially in quarters such as Pontstraße, the Frankenberger Viertel or around Aachen Cathedral, it is hardly possible to find a space for the removal van spontaneously.
For this reason, a parking restriction zone is usually worthwhile here. Our price list states 30 to 100 euros per day, depending on location and duration. Applying early is important, because in busy locations such as the city centre, Burtscheid or around the RWTH campus, the application and signs should be planned early – the city's deadlines are given in the section further below.
- Reserved parking area right outside the front door
- Shorter carrying distances, noticeably faster loading and unloading
- Legally compliant signage thanks to official approval
- Avoiding fines for illegal parking during the move
In neighbourhoods with more space, such as Brand, Richterich or Laurensberg, the existing parking in front of the house is often sufficient. In densely built areas such as the Altstadt or the Pontviertel, on the other hand, we generally recommend the official parking restriction zone to avoid delays on moving day. What we take care of is set out in the quote; the application and signs must comply with the city's rules so that you can concentrate fully on your new home in Aachen on moving day.
From Aachen to Berlin, Cologne or the Ruhr
Aachen is conveniently located in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia and has excellent connections to the national motorway network via the A4, A44 and A544. For a long-distance move from Aachen, this means short journeys to Cologne, Düsseldorf and the Ruhr as well as the route to our location in Berlin-Moabit, around 635 road kilometres to the east.
Our long-distance moves start at 3.80 euros per kilometre and are calculated individually according to load volume, floor and additional services. Destinations in the Ruhr and Rhineland with their own location page include Duisburg, Essen, Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen, Bochum and Dortmund. We also carry out moves to Krefeld, Wuppertal or Hagen.
For smaller quantities or single pieces of furniture, we offer an affordable part load, where your belongings are carried together with other transports on the same route – ideal for students who commute between Aachen and their home town, or for smaller follow-up shipments. For the route between Aachen and Berlin, we allow about nine hours with the lorry including a break and plan the arrival window and loading time in advance so that your household goods arrive safely and on time. Piano transport over long distances is also possible; we determine the securing and material in advance.
Services for your move in Aachen
As a removal company from Berlin-Moabit, we offer a complete range of services for Aachen, matched to the local conditions between the cathedral, the Altstadt and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Every move is planned individually, regardless of whether it is a small student flat or an entire detached house.
- Private move – from a studio flat to a house in Brand or Laurensberg
- Company move – for offices, practices and businesses throughout the city
- Part load – affordable transport of smaller quantities over long distances
- House clearance – for cellars, lofts or complete household liquidations
- Parking restriction zone – planning according to the City of Aachen's rules
- Piano transport – proper transport of pianos and grand pianos
- Senior move – a considerate move with personal support
- Student move – quick, straightforward and budget-conscious
All services can be combined flexibly, for example a private move with a simultaneous clearance of the old flat, or a company move with an application for a parking restriction zone in front of the office building. We clarify the particular features of your address in advance – whether it is in Aachen's Altstadt or a new housing estate in Richterich – and adjust vehicle size, staffing and scheduling accordingly. This way you get a move in Aachen from a single source, carefully organised from the first consultation to the last box.
Company moves in Aachen: city centre, Rothe Erde, Melaten
Aachen is not only a historic imperial city but also an important business and science location. With RWTH Aachen, numerous research institutions and technology companies around the Melaten campus and in the Aachen-Rothe Erde commercial area, the city has developed into an important location for industry, IT and engineering. In addition, there is the cross-border Avantis business park between Aachen and Heerlen.
For a smooth company move in Aachen, we plan every step in detail: from dismantling and transporting IT infrastructure and server cabinets and relocating office furniture to setting everything up again on schedule at the new location. Especially in listed old buildings in the city centre or in modern office complexes in the Rothe Erde area, this requires careful coordination with property management and the monument protection authorities.
- Dismantling and assembly of office furniture and workstations
- Safe transport of IT equipment, servers and files
- Moves outside regular business hours to minimise downtime
- Coordination with property managers in office buildings and business parks
- Applying for parking restriction zones for delivery zones and loading areas
Whether it is a small start-up in an RWTH spin-off office, a medium-sized company in a commercial area or a larger administrative site in the city centre – we make sure that operations can continue at the new location as quickly as possible. We also carry out company moves beyond the region, for example to Cologne, Düsseldorf or the Ruhr, and plan them with the same care as local moves within Aachen.
Student moves around RWTH and FH Aachen
With RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen, the city is one of the largest higher-education locations in Germany. Correspondingly high is the number of students moving within the city at the start or end of semester – often between shared-flat rooms around Pontstraße, halls of residence near the Melaten campus or small apartments in the city centre. For this group, we offer a straightforward student move at a fixed price after a survey.
The process and booking of a move with Praktik Transport und Umzüge are deliberately kept simple:
- Send an enquiry: fill in the online form or get in touch by phone
- Free assessment: we determine the flat size, floor and particular features such as narrow access in the Altstadt
- Individual quote: transparent pricing with no hidden costs
- Arranging a date: flexible dates, including at short notice at the change of semester
- Carrying out the move: packing and unpacking, transport, a parking restriction zone if needed and assembly on site
For students who only need to transport a few boxes or pieces of furniture, an affordable part load is often worthwhile instead of a dedicated removal van. If you also want to dispose of old furniture or rubbish, you can book the clearance at the same time. Parents who support their student children with their first move to Aachen also appreciate the clear communication and fixed price structure. This makes the move at the start or end of studies in Aachen stress-free, plannable and affordable – no matter whether you are moving to the city centre, to Brand or into a hall of residence on campus.
Temporary parking restriction in Aachen: special use, Lagerhausstraße and the four-day rule
In Aachen, you apply to the city for the parking restriction for your move as a traffic order under § 45 StVO. According to the service portal, the responsible office is the special use unit (Sondernutzung), Lagerhausstraße 20, 52064 Aachen. For parking restrictions, the address [email protected] is given. You can find the application form, information sheet and templates for moves in the download area of the service.
The traffic signs must be in place at least four full calendar days before work begins, with the day they are put up counting towards this. The order is generally subject to a fee; the city states the amount in its fee schedule. You bear all costs for obtaining, putting up, maintaining and removing the signs. Only traffic signs described in the StVO are permitted; they are put up on the adjacent pavement, the lower edge must be at least 2.20 m above the ground, and the material must be safe and in proper condition.
When the signs are put up, any vehicles already parked there must be recorded with their registration number, vehicle type, location, date and time; the setting-up must be documented with a photo showing a recognisable date. Changes to or extensions of a granted parking restriction go through a separate service of the city. The parking restriction and the position of the signs must be checked daily. Cordoning off the area yourself is not permitted. You can find more about our planning under parking restriction zone.
Aachen: road traffic authority, exemption permit and moving across the border
The City of Aachen's road traffic authority (Lagerhausstraße 20, [email protected], tel. 0241 432-68499) is part of the Mobility and Transport department (Fachbereich Mobilität und Verkehr) and orders traffic management measures such as residents' parking zones, delivery and loading zones and absolute no-stopping zones. If you want to change or extend a parking restriction that has already been granted, you use a separate service of the city.
According to the city, the authority examines an exemption permit under § 46 StVO on a case-by-case basis; as a rule, there is no legal entitlement to one. The city mentions applications by email or form, among other things, and the vehicle registration number is mandatory. The city points out that permits may come with conditions and will be revoked in the event of misuse. So do not leave planning your moving dates in Aachen until shortly beforehand.
Aachen lies in the three-country region. For a move to the Netherlands or Belgium, both EU states: the customs administration on zoll.de describes removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) as goods brought in duty-free from a non-EU state; the conditions are set out on the subpages of zoll.de. For moves to or from non-EU states, check the customs rules early. For cross-border moves, you can find our service under international move.
