Moving to Aachen: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Aachen
Moving to Aachen: imperial city, RWTH and the border triangle
Guide
A move to Aachen takes you to Germany's westernmost city: Aachen borders Belgium and the Netherlands, and Vaals lies right on the city boundary. Around 264,000 people live here, many because of RWTH Aachen University and the university hospital in Laurensberg. In the old town around the cathedral and market square, streets are narrow and parking is scarce, so an approved parking restriction is almost always part of the planning. For your private move, we clarify access, floor and space for the vehicle in advance.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 635 km via the A2, A1 and A4 to Aachen; with breaks, that takes about nine hours. Whether you are coming from Berlin or moving from Aachen back to Berlin: we give the fixed price after a survey. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Aachen; moves to Belgium or the Netherlands involve no customs formalities within the EU.

What we take on for a move to Aachen
Planned from Berlin, arriving in the border triangle
We do not have a branch in Aachen; we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in Burtscheid, a flat in the Frankenberger Viertel or a house in Brand. We apply for the parking restriction in front of the new address in good time according to the city's requirements. We give the fixed price after the survey; for your goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move, we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Little to move? Part load!
For smaller volumes or individual items, a shared load to Aachen can be cheaper: your goods share the loading area with other consignments on the same route heading west. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few items are following on.

planning to assembly
A move to Aachen raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get into the old town, when do you apply for the parking restriction and where do you register? This guide introduces the districts, from Aachen-Mitte with Burtscheid and the Frankenberger Viertel to Brand, Eilendorf, Haaren, Kornelimünster/Walheim, Laurensberg and Richterich. It also covers parking restrictions, registration and the journey from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Aachen
Aachen's districts at a glance
Aachen is divided into seven districts: Aachen-Mitte, Brand, Eilendorf, Haaren, Kornelimünster/Walheim, Laurensberg and Richterich. Aachen-Mitte includes the old town around the cathedral and market, the Frankenberger Viertel and Burtscheid, whose thermal springs shape the spa area. To the west lies Laurensberg, with the university hospital on the border with Vaals; west of the city centre there is also the Vaalserquartier.
Brand, Eilendorf and Haaren in the east and Kornelimünster/Walheim in the south are quieter and more characterised by detached houses, while Richterich lies in the north. For the move, the address matters: an older building without a lift in the city centre needs different planning from a house in Brand. Our private moving service adapts to this.
University, hospital, border: who moves to Aachen
Aachen's housing market is shaped by RWTH Aachen University, FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences and the university hospital; at the start of semester, demand for small flats is particularly high. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition; searching early and being flexible about the district helps. Around 264,000 people live in the city. If you are arriving for the start of semester or a new job, fix moving day early so that the parking restriction and registration fit into the first two weeks.
Aachen lies in the border triangle: the city boundary runs for around 24 km along Belgium and around 22 km along the Netherlands, and Vaals is a direct neighbouring municipality. If you move across the border, you need no customs papers for household goods within the EU. For long distances from Berlin, you will find everything under Long-distance moves.
Moving costs explained in brief

Your move to Aachen: applying for a parking restriction
For the removal van in Aachen, you need a traffic order for a temporary parking restriction (Haltverbot). According to the City of Aachen's service portal, applications are handled by the special use department (Sondernutzung, FB 68, Lagerhausstraße 20). The “Haltverbot” form is available in the download area and is submitted by email to [email protected].
- Signs: They must be in place at least 4 full calendar days before work begins; the day they are put up counts. The lower edge must be at least 2.20 metres above the ground.
- Documentation: Putting up the signs must be recorded with a photo showing a recognisable date; you record any vehicles already parked with registration number, type and location.
- Costs: The order is subject to a fee; according to the city, the amount is set out in the fee schedule. The applicant bears all costs related to setting it up.
- Prohibited: Cordoning off an area on your own authority is not permitted.
Because the deadlines can become tight, apply for the parking restriction early. How an application generally works is explained in our guide to the parking restriction zone; you will find our service under Parking restriction zone. What we offer for moves in Aachen is described on the page Removal company Aachen.
In addition, the parking restriction needs supplementary signs stating the time limits, and according to the service portal it must be checked daily. The special use department answers queries on 0241 432-68425.
Plan the process backwards from moving day: first the application, then approval, then the signs at least four full calendar days beforehand.
Registration and everyday life after moving to Aachen
After moving in, you register with the registration authority within two weeks, as required by § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG). The City of Aachen refers to its service portal for booking appointments and registering your residence. General questions are answered on the public authority number 115.
- What to bring: ID for everyone moving and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord.
- Timing: Plan the registration for the first few days after the move, before boxes and furniture take over everyday life.
- Vehicles: After registering, you should also check the address for your car and its registration plate.
If you would like to learn more about neighbourhoods, housing and everyday life in the city, you will find it in the guide for newcomers. Other places in the region are shown on our page about North Rhine-Westphalia. For moves from other regions, a long-distance move is a good option; the journey starts at our base in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21).
The City of Aachen also offers its pages in English, French and Dutch. For the journey on moving day, it is worth checking current closures: according to aachen.de, the Burtscheid bridge is expected to be closed to all traffic from around September 2027.
Request the landlord confirmation from your landlord in good time so that it is available when you move in.
