Hamm for New Residents
Hamm: the Lippe, the Canal and Seven Boroughs Each with Its Own Citizens' Office
Settling in, not just moving
Hamm is an independent city with around 180,000 inhabitants on the north-eastern edge of the Ruhr area. The Lippe flows right through the city, and the Datteln-Hamm Canal ends here. The city is divided into the seven boroughs Mitte, Uentrop, Rhynern, Pelkum, Herringen, Bockum-Hövel and Heessen; each has its own citizens' office. North of the Lippe the Münsterland begins, while in the south the boroughs merge into the Hellweg plains. Hamm is an important railway junction and the seat of Germany's largest Higher Regional Court. Its landmark is the Glass Elephant in the Maximilianpark, created for North Rhine-Westphalia's first State Garden Show in 1984.
For newcomers, the first weeks are about registration, the flat search and the commute. The city has a qualified rent index (Mietspiegel) with an online calculator; residents' parking permits are available at the citizens' office. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Hamm. Our page Moving Berlin – Hamm describes the route from Berlin – around 464 km, almost entirely via the A2.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Hamm
Access, floor, parking zone
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Hamm-based firm. That is why, before moving day, we clarify with you how the lorry can reach the building, whether the stairwell or lift imposes limits and whether a parking restriction zone is needed in a residents' parking area. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price. Read more about the process under Private move.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Hamm
Working and Studying in Hamm
Hamm was long shaped by mining and the railway; the marshalling and freight yard, covering 110 hectares, was once one of the largest in Europe and is now largely disused. Today, freight logistics – according to Wikipedia including Netto, Edeka, Trinkgut and Douglas – Stadtwerke Hamm, the Higher Regional Court and several hospitals are among the important employers. On the eastern edge stands the Hamm-Uentrop combined-cycle power plant.
The state-run Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences (HSHL) has had its campus on Marker Allee since 2014; there is also the private SRH University of Logistics and Business. Hospitals include the Evangelisches Krankenhaus, St. Marien-Hospital, the St. Barbara-Klinik in Heessen and St.-Josef-Krankenhaus in Bockum-Hövel. The A1 and A2 lead into the Ruhr area and to Münster.
Leisure on the Lippe, the Canal and in the Maximilianpark
The Maximilianpark on the site of the former Maximilian colliery grew out of the 1984 State Garden Show; the Glass Elephant is the city's landmark. The park hosts events such as an oriental bazaar and a medieval market. In Uentrop stands the Sri Kamadchi Ampal Hindu temple, the largest Tamil temple in Europe.
Along the Lippe and the Datteln-Hamm Canal there are paths for cycling and walking, and in Uentrop lies the spa park with its annual spa park festival. For shopping, the city centre has the Allee-Center and the Ritterpassage. We do not quote rents ourselves – use the city's rent index.

Under § 17(1) of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) you must register within two weeks of moving in. According to the city, in Hamm the two-week deadline also applies to moves within the city. According to the city of Hamm, registration is free of charge. You need your ID card or passport (foreign nationals their national passport and ID) and the completed landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. The form is available on paper or online; if you register in person, you also fill in the form “Anmeldung einer Wohnung” (registration of a dwelling).
You can register in person at any of the seven citizens' offices: Mitte (Theodor-Heuss-Platz 16), Uentrop (Alter Grenzweg 2), Rhynern (Unnaer Straße 10–12), Pelkum (Kamener Straße 177), Herringen (Dortmunder Straße 245), Bockum-Hövel (Teichweg 1) and Heessen (Amtsstraße 19). Boroughs, Residents' Parking and Rent Index in Hamm
According to the city administration, Hamm is divided into seven boroughs: Mitte, Uentrop, Rhynern, Pelkum, Herringen, Bockum-Hövel and Heessen. According to the city, there is a citizens' office in all seven boroughs, which makes dealing with the authorities after the move easier.
According to the city of Hamm, residents' parking applies in all city-centre residential areas. You apply for the residents' parking permit at the citizens' office of your borough or online via the citeq portal. The city quotes €31 for one year or €62 for two years. The requirement is that you are registered in the zone as the vehicle keeper with your main or secondary residence and that the vehicle is registered to a member of the household. The zones are called A/B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, S, W and W1.
For the rent, the rent index 2025 helps: Hamm city council has recognised it, it has been valid since 1 July 2025 for two years and is designated a qualified rent index under § 558d BGB. The city page does not give prices per square metre; you determine the comparable local rent with the city's rent calculator. For moving day itself, it is worth looking at our page on the parking restriction zone. You will find the city page under Moves in Hamm.
