Moving to Dortmund: Your Partner for a Fresh Start in the Ruhr
Tips and deadlines
Dortmund has transformed itself from a coal and steel location into a city of universities, services and logistics. Whether you are starting a career at the Technologiepark, studying at TU Dortmund University or looking for a family home – the twelve boroughs with 62 districts are very different. From a late-19th-century period building in the Kreuzviertel to a new-build flat on Phoenix-See lake in Hörde: for your move, the floor, access and parking space in front of the building are what count. That is exactly what we clarify before moving day. On top of this come the formalities in your new city: registration at the citizens' services office (Bürgerdienste) within two weeks, bulky waste via the EDG and a parking restriction that in Dortmund only specialist firms may apply for. This guide summarises all the essentials.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 493 km, almost entirely on the A2, into the Ruhr area; by lorry, that is about seven and a half hours including breaks. According to the city, the parking restriction in Dortmund may only be applied for by a specialist firm – we take care of that. We quote the fixed price after the survey, also for the return journey from Dortmund to Berlin. Everything about the route is on the page Moving Berlin – Dortmund. We allow one day for the lorry journey; we plan loading in Berlin and unloading in Dortmund so that you can hand over the keys in time.

Survey, fixed price, date with a parking restriction
Call us on 01625978461 or request your individual quote online. Already when calculating, we take into account typical Dortmund conditions such as narrow stairwells in period buildings in the Kaiserviertel or lift situations in tower blocks on Westfalendamm. This gives you a realistic fixed price that still holds on moving day.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Dortmund works with us
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Dortmund
We have no branch in Dortmund; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a period building in the Kreuzviertel, a flat in the Nordstadt or a house in Aplerbeck. We submit the application for the parking restriction to the road traffic authority, as the city requires. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuable items.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Dortmund brings its own challenges, such as the parking situation in densely built-up neighbourhoods like the Kreuzviertel or the Unionviertel. For many newcomers, the connection to light rail lines U41 to U49 also plays an important role in choosing where to live. Anyone working at the Technologiepark, at Signal Iduna or in the logistics sector around Dortmund harbour should calculate commuting times to the individual districts carefully. Our private moving service takes all these local factors into account, so that your move-in runs smoothly.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Dortmund
The most popular districts for your move to Dortmund
The Kreuzviertel is considered one of Dortmund's most popular residential neighbourhoods, known for its late-19th-century buildings, cosy cafés and proximity to Westfalenpark. Young professionals and students particularly appreciate the short distances to the city centre and the neighbourhood's pub life. If you prefer things quieter, Aplerbeck or Brackel offer family-friendly areas of detached houses. Hombruch also scores with its proximity to TU Dortmund University and is extremely sought after by students and academics.
A real up-and-comer is the Hörde district with the newly created Phoenix-See lake, a former steelworks site that today attracts people with lakeside flats and upmarket restaurants. If you are looking for urban flair with multicultural charm, you will find it in the Nordstadt, one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the city. For newcomers, it is worth taking a look at our locations overview to find places with their own page.
Housing, employers and quality of life in Dortmund
Rents differ greatly depending on location: the Kreuzviertel and Phoenix-See are in demand, other boroughs are cheaper – current figures can be found in the city's rent index (Mietspiegel). Large employers such as Signal Iduna, Wilo, Thyssenkrupp and numerous logistics companies around Dortmund harbour ensure a stable job market. The Technologiepark Dortmund, with numerous IT and software companies, is also attracting more and more skilled workers to the city, who benefit from the proximity to TU Dortmund University and Dortmund University of Applied Sciences.
Quality of life in Dortmund impresses with green recreational areas such as Westfalenpark and Rombergpark, combined with a strong football culture around Borussia Dortmund and the Signal Iduna Park. Anyone who travels a lot for work benefits from good connections via Dortmund Airport and the central location in the Ruhr area. For a smooth start, we recommend our private moving services, which we tailor to your flat in Dortmund.
What will you pay for your move?
The question of costs is easy to answer: 1-room flats cost from €375, 2-room flats from €579, 3-room flats from €884 and 4-room flats from €1,279. For houses and villas, an individual quote applies, and for long-distance moves a price from €3.95/km. The calculation is most accurate after a free survey.
Price factors for your move at a glance
The price of your move depends above all on the volume of your household and the distance between the two homes – we calculate transparently from €3.95/km. The floor, whether there is a lift and any required parking restriction zone also affect the costs. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can change the price individually.

Applying for a parking restriction zone for your move in Dortmund
Anyone in Dortmund who wants to place a removal van directly in front of the building usually needs a parking restriction zone (Haltverbotszone). According to the City of Dortmund, the road traffic authority in the civil engineering office (Tiefbauamt) (Königswall 14, 44137 Dortmund) issues the traffic order under § 45 (6) StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations). The authority only receives visitors by appointment, and the application can also be made online. Important: according to the city, only a removal company, a service provider or a traffic safety company may submit the application; private individuals cannot submit it themselves. As a removal company, we take care of this for you.
The city states these key points:
- Lead time: the application should be submitted 20 working days before the desired period of validity.
- Fee: under fee number 261 GebOSt (fee schedule for road traffic measures), at least 30 euros for one day and 40 euros for several days. According to the city, the signage is charged in addition.
- Signs: a traffic specialist firm puts up sign 283 at least three days before the date. The day the signs are put up does not count.
So plan the application straight after the date is confirmed. Whether you are moving out of the Kreuzviertel or moving in on Phoenix-See: during the free survey, we determine where the van should stand and how long the zone needs to be. More about the scope of services can be found under parking restriction zone, and all information about our service area under Removal company Dortmund.
After moving to Dortmund: registration and bulky waste
After moving in, you have two weeks in Dortmund to register. The city points out that exceeding the deadline is an administrative offence under § 54 (2) BMG. The citizens' services office (Bürgerdienste) only sees people by prior appointment, and appointments are booked online. You must bring the identity documents of all persons to be registered and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. Registration is free of charge. Alternatively, electronic residence registration via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de is possible. For this, you need the online ID function of your identity card and a BundID account, and according to the city you must complete the process within ten minutes.
When unpacking, old things are often left over. For bulky waste, EDG Entsorgung Dortmund states these rules:
- Book by phone on (0231) 9111.111 or via the online form, at least two working days in advance
- Collection between 7:00 and 14:00, items put out by 7:00 at ground level at the kerbside
- Quantity limited to what fits in one room; renovation waste such as windows and doors is excluded
- Standard collection according to EDG (as of 1/2025) 20 euros, preferred date 60 euros
Everything about settling in can be read in our guide Living in Dortmund. It is best to book your registration appointment before moving day.
