Moving from Berlin to Lucerne (Switzerland) – and back

Moving company Berlin
Between the Spree and the Reuss: moving Berlin ↔ Lucerne
Move without stress
Lucerne lies where the Reuss flows out of Lake Lucerne – and in a country outside the EU customs union. Your household goods therefore travel as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut): at the survey we record the volume, draw up the inventory list with you and explain form 18.44, which you sign for customs. After that the fixed price is set in writing. We come from Berlin, Stromstraße 21 in Moabit, and the same team that loads in Berlin carries your furniture into the flat in Lucerne – with packing and assembly on request.
At around 907 kilometres and approx. 13.5 hrs by lorry including breaks, Lucerne is far beyond the nine hours of daily driving time allowed to one driver under EU Regulation 561/2006. That is why two drivers take turns or we stay overnight on the way. In Switzerland lorry traffic over 3.5 t stops from 10 pm to 5 am, and removal goods are cleared on working days. Liability is under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per cubic metre), with optional additional insurance on request. We plan the move from Lucerne to Berlin in the same way.

Move
planning Berlin ↔ Lucerne
For your move to Lucerne we clarify in advance what Switzerland requires: the inventory list for the removal goods, form 18.44 and proof such as an employment or tenancy contract. Added to that are the parking restriction in Berlin via the district office, a parking space outside your Lucerne address, kitchen and furniture assembly, and interim storage if the dates do not match. After moving in, you register with the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste) of the City of Lucerne within 14 days.

FAQ on long-distance moves in both directions
Moving to Lucerne: removal goods there and back
With the move from Berlin to Lucerne you transfer your residence to Switzerland. Your household goods remain duty-free if you have used them for at least six months, will continue to use them yourself and declare them at the border as removal goods: with the signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof such as an employment or tenancy contract. We take care of packing, transport and furniture assembly from the Berlin flat to the Lucerne flat.
For the return move from Lucerne to Berlin the formalities are reversed: on export the Swiss customs office receives an inventory list with both addresses, and in Germany the removal goods are declared at customs and remain duty-free if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months. In this direction too there is a fixed price after the survey, and liability is under the HGB.
The route: around 907 km via the Rhine valley, Walensee and Hirzel
After loading in Berlin we take the A9 to Nuremberg, the A6 to the Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim interchange, the A7 to Memmingen and the A96 to Lindau. Beyond the Pfänder Tunnel on the Austrian A14 we head into the Rhine valley and on the Swiss A13 to Sargans, then on the A3 along the Walensee and Lake Zurich to Wädenswil. Over the Hirzel we reach Sihlbrugg; the A14 leads past Zug and along the Reuss to the Rotsee junction on the edge of Lucerne. In total around 907 km, approx. 13.5 hrs by lorry including breaks.
Lorries over 3.5 t drive at no more than 80 km/h in Germany (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after four and a half hours a 45-minute break is mandatory. Two drivers take turns or we stay overnight before the border; at night from 10 pm to 5 am the lorry may not drive in Switzerland. Unloading takes place in Lucerne, or in Berlin for the return move – including furniture assembly.
Arriving in Lucerne: residents' services and access
Lucerne is the capital of the canton of the same name; since 2010 the former village of Littau has also been part of the city, which today is divided into the districts of Luzern and Littau and 27 quarters. Several bridges over the Reuss connect the old town and the new town, including the Seebrücke and the Chapel Bridge with its Water Tower. After moving in you register with the residents' services of the City of Lucerne within 14 days; Kriens, Emmen or Horw are separate municipalities with their own registration. For us the specific address is what counts: we check access, parking space, floor and stairwell before moving day.
On the return move to Berlin you deregister in Lucerne and register at the Bürgeramt in Berlin within two weeks, with your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We apply for the parking restriction at the Berlin address with the road traffic authority of the district office – the signs go up 72 hours beforehand. That way the unloading day fits the key handover.
