Bielefeld for Newcomers: Registration Districts and Daily Life in OWL

Bielefeld Guide
Arriving in Bielefeld, Between the Sparrenburg and the Teutoburg Forest
The first few weeks
With around 331,000 inhabitants, Bielefeld is the largest city in East Westphalia-Lippe. The Sparrenburg castle stands above the old town, and the Teutoburg Forest runs right through the city – with the Hermannsweg trail, the Olderdissen native animal park and the farmhouse museum. The city is divided into ten districts, from Mitte via Schildesche to Sennestadt, a planned post-war town. Newcomers can get most places by Stadtbahn (light rail), bus or bike.
Professionally, the Oetker Group, Schüco, DMG Mori, Goldbeck and Böllhoff shape the city, along with the v. Bodelschwingh Foundations Bethel, hospitals and universities. Bielefeld University, founded in 1969, and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences attract students. We are not a Bielefeld company but come from Berlin; the route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Bielefeld.

What We Take On – and What Stays With You in Bielefeld
Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side
We have no branch in Bielefeld; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. We ask about the floor, lift and access in advance – whether it is a period building in Mitte, a flat in Schildesche or a house in Sennestadt – and we plan the parking restriction according to the city's deadlines. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB, § 451e: €620 per m³). You handle registration, re-registering your vehicle and waste bins yourself; we set the delivery day so that it all fits.

What
Newcomers to Bielefeld Should Know
After moving into Bielefeld, the first two weeks count: book an appointment at the citizens' office, take the landlord confirmation with you, then deal with vehicle registration, nursery or school and the waste bins. Which district suits you depends on your commute and Stadtbahn connection. Our services for moving day can be found under home removal – from packing to furniture assembly. That leaves you more time to get to know your new city.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Bielefeld
Ten Districts – Where Newcomers Live in Bielefeld
Bielefeld is divided into ten districts: Mitte, Schildesche, Gadderbaum, Brackwede, Dornberg, Heepen, Jöllenbeck, Senne, Sennestadt and Stieghorst. With around 81,000 inhabitants, Mitte is the largest; it is home to the old town, the main station and the area around Siegfriedplatz.
Gadderbaum is shaped by Bethel, Brackwede and Jöllenbeck have their own district offices, and Sennestadt is a planned post-war town. Brackwede, Senne and Sennestadt lie south of the Teutoburg Forest. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and Stadtbahn connection.
Work, Study and Leisure in Bielefeld
Major employers are the Oetker Group, Schüco, DMG Mori, Goldbeck and Böllhoff, along with the v. Bodelschwingh Foundations Bethel, hospitals and universities. Bielefeld University was founded in 1969; Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences has campuses in Bielefeld, Minden and Gütersloh. We do not quote specific rents – the city's rent index shows the range for your address.
In your free time, the Teutoburg Forest with the Hermannsweg, the Olderdissen native animal park, the Bürgerpark and the Obersee lake beckon. Markets such as the Stiftsmarkt in Schildesche or the Schweinemarkt in Brackwede help you get to know your new neighbourhood.
How Much Does a Move to Bielefeld Cost?
So that you can plan your move properly, here are the key figures: for a one-room flat, prices start at €344, for two rooms at €594. A three-room flat costs from €899, a four-room flat from €1,309. For larger properties such as a house or villa, we prepare a tailored, individual quote. For long-distance moves, a price per kilometre from €4.25 applies. Use our free survey to get a binding price.
What the price depends on
For a fair calculation, we take into account the volume of your belongings, the distance (from €4.25/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. A parking restriction zone also ensures that moving day runs smoothly. In addition, we offer furniture assembly and a shared load.

Registering in Bielefeld: Citizens' Office, Appointment and Deadline
According to the City of Bielefeld, you register with the citizens' office within two weeks of moving in, for both main and secondary residences. You do not need to deregister at your old place of residence. You can register at the earliest on the day you actually move in; registering in advance is not possible. In-person registration is only possible with an appointment, which you book online. You can reach the BürgerServiceCenter on +49 521 51-0, Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 18:00.
You should bring:
- the original ID documents of everyone being registered
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
- for children, the birth certificate, and for unmarried parents a declaration of custody
Registration is free of charge and is processed immediately on site. You can also register online via BundID with the online ID function, but only for moves within Germany and not for secondary residences. Processing takes up to three working days. Anyone moving from abroad cannot authorise someone else; everyone required to register, including children, must appear in person. The Federal Printing Office (Bundesdruckerei) sends the address stickers for your ID card and passport by post after about two weeks. For a secondary residence, the city levies a second home tax. Vehicle keepers have their registration transferred to the new address by appointment at the vehicle registration authority. As of: October 2026.
How we plan moves in and around Bielefeld is described on the page Moves in Bielefeld.
Living in Bielefeld: Districts, Rent Index 2026 and Waste
According to the City of Bielefeld, the city is divided into ten districts: Brackwede, Dornberg, Gadderbaum, Heepen, Jöllenbeck, Mitte, Schildesche, Senne, Sennestadt and Stieghorst. With around 81,000 inhabitants, Mitte is the most populous district. How the locations differ is shown by the Bielefeld rent index 2026, a qualified rent index under the German Civil Code (BGB). Its online rent calculator gives the local comparative rent for each address: you enter the address, construction age class and size class and receive a range from 15 per cent below to 16 per cent above the calculated average. It only applies to privately financed housing that is not subject to rent controls.
For waste, all households use residual, paper, recycling and organic waste bins. The bin goes out at the kerbside by 6 am on collection day. The dates are provided by the waste calendar, PDF, iCal file and the Bürgerservice app. The Umweltbetrieb collects bulky waste after booking. You book online with BundID, by phone or at the customer service centre at Eckendorfer Straße 57, in volume steps of 4, 8, 12 or 16 m³. Everything must be ready by 7 am, stacked no higher than 1.5 metres. Alternatively, the Mitte (Herforder Straße 220), Süd (Fabrikstraße 32) and Nord (Engersche Straße 245) recycling centres accept bulky waste for a fee, Monday to Friday from 8 to 17 and on Saturdays from 8 to 15. Further orientation is offered by the Bielefeld guide.
