Wuppertal guide
Wuppertal: a city on the Wupper
Boroughs, housing, daily life
Wuppertal is a city of contrasts: dense Wilhelminian-era streets in Elberfeld and Barmen down in the valley, steep residential streets up to Cronenberg and Ronsdorf. Around 357,000 people live here, and since 1901 the Schwebebahn suspension railway has run above the Wupper for more than 13 kilometres. For your move to Wuppertal we plan the vehicle and carrying routes according to location and gradient; you will find services for private households under Private move.
Many people move to Wuppertal from Cologne, Düsseldorf or the Ruhr, attracted by the proximity to the Bergisches Land. We are based in Berlin and operate nationwide – it is around 525 road kilometres to Wuppertal, and the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Wuppertal. We give you the price as a fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB. You will find further destinations in the locations overview.

What we clarify before moving day in Wuppertal
Hillside, parking restriction, date
Wuppertal’s hillside locations, narrow Wilhelminian-era streets and the tight parking situation in Elberfeld and Barmen make every move a little different. We check access, gradient and floors in advance and sort out the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) with you. After the survey the price is set as a fixed price; your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). On top of that there are fixed contact persons and clear dates.

Wuppertal
for newcomers
Besides packing boxes, a move to Wuppertal also brings organisational tasks, such as registering at the residents’ registration office, the residents’ parking permit and the parking restriction zone for narrow streets in the valley. We also advise you on notice periods, paying double rent during the transition and the right packing materials for steep stairwells. This way you are well prepared from the first plan to moving in.

Frequently asked questions about living in Wuppertal
Ten boroughs between the valley and the heights
Wuppertal is divided into ten boroughs (Stadtbezirke): Elberfeld, Elberfeld-West, Uellendahl-Katernberg, Vohwinkel, Cronenberg, Barmen, Oberbarmen, Heckinghausen, Langerfeld-Beyenburg and Ronsdorf. With its pedestrian zone and the Von der Heydt Museum, Elberfeld is the centre in the west, while Barmen in the east has its own town hall and the Toelleturm tower on the heights.
The dense Wilhelminian-era quarters lie in the valley along the Wupper; the suspension railway links Vohwinkel with Oberbarmen. On the heights, Cronenberg and Ronsdorf are quieter, with more detached houses; the Burgholz state forest lies in Cronenberg. During the survey we clarify gradient, access and the loading route for your new address.
University, industry and greenery in Wuppertal
Wuppertal is an industrial city with a history: Bayer was founded in Barmen in 1863 and still produces at its Elberfeld plant today, and Vorwerk also has its roots in Barmen. The University of Wuppertal (Bergische Universität) and the Kirchliche Hochschule bring students to the city. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures; compare offers on the usual portals.
Despite being a big city, Wuppertal is green: the Nordbahntrasse is a popular cycling and walking route, the Burgholz state forest is home to a large arboretum, and there is also the zoo. Düsseldorf, Cologne and the Ruhr are within commuting distance. Our team sets your moving date to suit the handover of your new flat.
Moving prices by flat size
Transparency is important to us. That is why we give clear starting prices: 1-room flat from €359, 2-room flat from €584, 3-room flat from €894 and 4-room flat from €1,324. We calculate larger properties such as houses or villas individually. For a long-distance move a per-kilometre rate from €4.15/km applies. It is best to clarify everything during a free survey.
What the price in Wuppertal depends on
How much your move costs depends largely on the volume and the distance (from €4.15/km). Floor, lift and parking restriction zone also play a part. For extras such as furniture assembly or a part load we are happy to prepare a separate quote.

Wuppertal: bulky waste before the move – AWG collection, express service and electrical appliances
Before moving in Wuppertal, it is worth checking the waste calendar of the AWG waste management company. According to the AWG, private households generally receive four bulky-waste collections a year; the dates for your street are in the waste calendar. For streets without fixed dates, households can request a collection free of charge up to four times a year. According to the AWG, booking is done via online forms; the page does not give a phone number for this. Put the bulky waste where your waste bins also stand, and make sure it obstructs neither pedestrians nor traffic. Waste paper and cardboard do not count as bulky waste.
Important for planning:
- The collection is limited to roughly the furnishings of one room; flat clearances and larger clearances are not part of the regular collection.
- The bulky waste must be ready by 7 am at the latest on the collection day and may be put out no earlier than the evening before.
- Items must be able to be loaded by hand; bundle or pack loose small parts.
- Put electrical appliances out separately, as they are collected by a different vehicle. The AWG collects large electrical appliances free of charge by appointment.
For short-notice collections there is the chargeable express service; the date is communicated after the request has been checked. For larger quantities the AWG refers to its chargeable skip service. If you would rather hand over the clearing, you will find our household clearance service or the house clearance.
Wuppertal: recycling centres, residents’ registration office and residents’ parking after moving in
The AWG runs four recycling centres: Bornberg 22, Giebel 30, Korzerter Straße 75 and Widukindstraße 39. All are open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Saturdays from 7.30 am to 4 pm, and closed on Mondays. For Wuppertal households they accept, among other things, paper, glass, metal, electrical appliances and used clothing free of charge and without quantity limits; bulky waste, rubble and green waste, on the other hand, are chargeable and limited in quantity. Commercial waste and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not accepted. You can reach the centres by phone on, among others, 0202 4042-375 (Bornberg) and 0202 4042-730 (Widukindstraße); only Bornberg and Widukindstraße accept car tyres and waste oil, with tyres limited to 8 at 2.50 euros each.
According to the City of Wuppertal, after moving in you have 14 days to register (§ 17 BMG). The residents’ registration office is located in the former Federal Railway directorate building, Döppersberg 41, 42103 Wuppertal (phone 0202 563-3535). Electronic registration via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de is free of charge; you must upload the landlord confirmation (as a self-declaration for owner-occupied property). Spouses and civil partners with minor children who move together from one flat in Germany into the new one can register together. According to the city, late registration can result in warning fines or fines. For Elberfeld and Barmen: you apply for residents’ parking permits for the town centres via the separate City-Parkausweis. According to the city, the standard residents’ parking permit costs 30.00 euros for one year, and changing zones during the period of validity costs 15.00 euros. The permit expires when you move away. You can read more about the city on Moving in Wuppertal.
