Bochum Guide

Arriving in Bochum, Between the Ruhr and the Emscher

The first few weeks

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 515 km via the A2 to the Ruhr area – the guide helps you settle in.

Bochum lies between the Ruhr and the Emscher in the heart of the Ruhr area and has around 359,000 inhabitants. It has been a university city since 1965: Ruhr University Bochum is considered Germany's largest campus university and has over 40,000 students. From 1962, Opel built its plants in Laer and Langendreer – they stand for the structural shift from mining to science and services. The German Mining Museum, the Schauspielhaus theatre, the Bermuda3eck nightlife quarter and Starlight Express, the world's longest-running musical at a single venue, are known well beyond the region.

Employers headquartered in Bochum include Vonovia, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See pension insurer and the local transport operator Bogestra; on top of that there are eight universities and university branch campuses. We are not a Bochum company but come from Berlin and handle your home removal right to your new address. The route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Bochum.

FROM BERLIN

What We Take On – and What Is Up to You in Bochum

Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side

We have no branch in the Ruhr area; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. We ask about the floor, lift and access in advance – whether it is the city centre near the Bermuda3eck, a high-rise in Querenburg or a house in Stiepel – and we plan the parking restriction in good time according to the city's requirements. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB, § 451e: €620 per m³). You handle registration, the resident parking permit and waste bins yourself; we set the delivery day so that it all fits. If the flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in the meantime.

Packing Service

We pack in Berlin and label every box by destination room, so that everything in Bochum is to hand on the first evening – with our packing service.

Storage

If your flat in Bochum only becomes available later, we store your belongings in the meantime and deliver on the handover date – with storage.

Student moves

For a room at the start of term at Ruhr University in Bochum, a small van or a shared load is often enough – with our student move.

Furniture Transport

A wardrobe or piano travels padded and secured, even into a period flat in Ehrenfeld in Bochum – with our furniture transport.
FIRST WEEKS IN BOCHUM

Six Steps After Moving into Bochum

What needs doing after moving into Bochum, in a sensible order – from the citizens' office to the recycling centre. Please check fees and opening hours beforehand on bochum.de.

01

Register within two weeks

Online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de without an appointment, or with an appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) – with ID and landlord confirmation (§ 17 BMG).
02

Re-register your car

You must enter your new address in the vehicle registration certificate without delay (§ 15 FZV); when moving in, you may keep your existing number plate.
03

Residents' parking

According to the city, the resident parking permit costs €90 a year and is only valid in signposted resident parking spaces; apply online or at the citizens' office.
04

Find a Recycling Centre

Six recycling centres, for example in Kornharpen, Riemke or Wattenscheid, accept household waste; green and garden waste is free of charge there.
05

Book a bulky waste collection

USB Bochum GmbH is responsible for old furniture and large quantities of boxes; the fees are set out in the city's waste fee statute.
06

Change your address everywhere

You inform your employer, bank, insurers and the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) yourself; a mail forwarding order with Deutsche Post bridges the first few months.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Few Belongings for Bochum? Shared Load

A Shared Trip to the Ruhr

With a shared load, your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading for the Ruhr area. This is worthwhile for Ruhr University students or young professionals with few household goods; when you enquire, we will tell you whether a trip to Bochum currently fits.

DAILY LIFE IN BOCHUM

What
Newcomers to Bochum Should Know

Authorities, routes, housing

After moving into Bochum, the first two weeks count: registration online or at the citizens' office, then the vehicle registration certificate, resident parking permit and waste bins. If you are moving to Ruhr University for the semester, look early for a room in Querenburg or along the U35. For moving day itself, we offer our home removal with packing, transport and assembly, with interim storage on request. That leaves you time to get to know your district and neighbourhood – from the Bermuda3eck to the banks of the Ruhr.

Choosing a borough

Mitte with Ehrenfeld, Süd with Querenburg and Stiepel, Südwest with Weitmar: the district determines access and loading route for a home removal, senior move or student move in Bochum.

Planning moving day

Packing service, padded furniture transport and, for single items, a small transport: we clarify parking restriction and carrying distances in advance, so that the lorry in Bochum stands close to the front door.

Businesses and special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, shared load or furniture taxi to Bochum, we agree fixed time windows so that your business can quickly carry on.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Bochum

Registration, districts, university, parking and moving to Bochum – answered briefly.
The costs depend on the size of the flat, the floor, additional services such as packing, and the route of around 515 km from Berlin. Guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview on this page; after a survey, we give a binding fixed price. A call on 01625978461 is all it takes to arrange an appointment. For small quantities, a shared load can be cheaper.

Six Districts – Where Newcomers Live in Bochum

Bochum is divided into six districts with 34 neighbourhoods: Bochum-Mitte, Wattenscheid, Bochum-Nord, Bochum-Ost with Laer, Langendreer and Werne, Bochum-Süd with Querenburg, Stiepel and Wiemelhausen, and Bochum-Südwest with Dahlhausen, Linden, Sundern and Weitmar. Mitte is home to the main station, the city centre, the Bermuda3eck and the Ehrenfeld quarter, which was developed to a plan before the First World War. Nord and Ost lie towards Herne and Dortmund; in the east, the Opel plants stood in Laer and Langendreer from 1962.

Querenburg is shaped by Ruhr University, and the south, with Stiepel, extends to the Ruhr and the Kemnade reservoir. Wattenscheid in the west has its own citizens' office. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and connection to the Stadtbahn, tram or S-Bahn. Before you commit, also take a look at the stairwell, parking situation and surroundings – that will also make moving day easier later.

Work, Study and Leisure in Bochum

We do not quote specific rents here, because they depend heavily on location and condition; compare offers and ask about the city's rent index (Mietspiegel). Employers headquartered in Bochum include Vonovia, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See and Bogestra. Besides Ruhr University, there is Bochum University of Applied Sciences and other institutions – eight universities or branch campuses in total. The shift from mining to a city of knowledge and services still shapes Bochum today.

In your free time, the Schauspielhaus, the German Mining Museum, the planetarium, Starlight Express and VfL Bochum's Ruhrstadion beckon. The Stadtpark with the Bismarck Tower offers relaxation, as do the Ruhr and the Kemnade reservoir in the south. Essen and Dortmund are quickly reached via the A40, A43 and A448; the main station is an ICE stop. For newcomers, the easiest way to get to know the city is through its cultural venues and the green spaces in the south.

How Much Does a Move to Bochum Cost?

As a first guide: a move from a one-room flat costs from €349, from a two-room flat from €609. For a three-room flat, prices start at €899, for a four-room flat at €1,309. For houses and villas there is no flat rate, but an individual quote. For long-distance moves we charge €3.85 per kilometre. You can plan most precisely with a free survey.

What the price depends on

The price is based on volume and mileage (from €3.85/km). In addition, the floor, lift and parking restriction zone affect the final total. If needed, we add furniture assembly or a shared load.

Registering in Bochum: Citizens' Office, Appointment and Online Registration

Under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz), you must register within two weeks of moving in; the City of Bochum points out that registering before you move in is not possible. Registration itself is free of charge. You must bring the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord and an ID document (identity card, passport or child's passport). If you move within Bochum and own a vehicle, also bring the vehicle registration certificate so that the address can be updated; the change in the vehicle registration certificate is charged according to the city's fee schedule.

You need an appointment to visit the citizens' office. You book it online, in person or via the public authority number 115. If the next available appointment is more than two weeks away, according to the city booking the appointment is enough to meet the deadline; bring the booking confirmation with you. There are citizens' offices in Mitte, Wattenscheid, Gerthe, Langendreer and Weitmar. The Querenburg citizens' office is closed until further notice (as stated on the city's website).

  • According to the City of Bochum, since 1 August 2024 you can also register online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de without an appointment.
  • For a secondary residence, an in-person visit is still necessary.
  • At the Mitte citizens' office only card payment is possible; at the other citizens' offices you can pay in cash or by card.

Daily Life in Bochum: Resident Parking Permit, Recycling Centres and Bulky Waste

According to the City of Bochum, for the resident parking permit you need a place of residence in Bochum and a car of which you are the keeper, or whose permanent use you prove with a declaration of transfer. One permit is issued per resident; it is valid for one year from the date of application and costs 90 euros. A replacement or a change of number plate or parking zone costs 12.80 euros. You apply online on Bochum's service portal or with an appointment at the citizens' office; bring an official ID and the registration certificate Part I. The permit is only valid in signposted resident parking spaces.

Six recycling centres accept recyclable household waste in normal household quantities: Kornharpen (Brelohstraße 70), Riemke (In der Provitze 20), Wattenscheid (Blücherstraße 53), Werne (Brandwacht 49), Linden (Am Sattelgut 132) and Laer (Schattbachstraße 80). Household chemicals, car products and similar hazardous waste are accepted by the Umweltbrummi mobile collection and by the Kornharpen, Laer and Wattenscheid recycling centres.

For bulky waste, the city refers you to USB Bochum GmbH; the fees are set out in the waste fee statute. If you want to declutter before moving in, you can book our house clearance. A parking restriction zone keeps space for your removal van outside the front door. An overview of the neighbourhoods is given in the moving guide for Bochum.

Always one step ahead.
