MOVING FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

Newcomer's Guide to Hagen

Hagen: A City with 42 Per Cent Forest on the Edge of the Sauerland

for newcomers

Unsere Firma drives around 505 km from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit to Hagen – here you can read what comes next.

Hagen lies on the south-eastern edge of the Ruhr area and is often called “the gateway to the Sauerland”. 42 per cent of the city's area is forest, four rivers – the Ruhr, Lenne, Volme and Ennepe – flow through the city, and Lake Harkort and Lake Hengstey lie to the north. According to the city, around 190,000 people live here in five city districts. Since 2012 Hagen has carried the official addition “City of the FernUniversität” to its name: according to the city, Germany's only state distance-learning university had around 72,500 students in the 2024/2025 winter semester. If you are new here, you need an appointment for the Bürgeramt (citizens' office).

Economically, the city is shaped by medium-sized metalworking companies and service providers; those headquartered here include the Bilstein Group, C.D. Wälzholz, Carl Bechem, Westfa and Wikinger Reisen. Hagen has been a railway hub since 1848 with an ICE stop, plus the A 1, A 45 and A 46 motorways. Important for newcomers: according to the city, since 15 September 2026 EU nationals moving to Hagen can only register at the Zentrales Bürgeramt (central citizens' office). We do not give specific rents; the Hagen rent index provides guidance. We handle the transport from Berlin as a home removal.

Who Does What When Moving to Hagen

Clear tasks before moving day

We have no branch in Hagen: the lorry sets off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 505 km via the A2, A1 and A45. Beforehand we ask about the floor, lift and access – whether in Wehringhausen, Boele or Hohenlimburg. On request, we apply in good time to the responsible authority for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside your new address. We give you the fixed price after the survey; liability is under § 451e HGB (€620 per m³). You take care of registering at one of the four citizens' offices yourself – within two weeks, free of charge and by appointment. Tips on booking an appointment can be found in the article Booking an appointment at the Bürgeramt.

Packing Service

We pack glasses, books and electronics securely for transport; every box is labelled with its destination room, so that in Hagen the kitchen and bedroom are set up first.

Furniture assembly

We dismantle the wardrobe, bed and desk in Berlin and reassemble them in Hagen – fittings and screws travel along in labelled bags.

Storage

If your move-out in Berlin does not match your move-in in Hagen, we store furniture and boxes in the meantime and deliver them as soon as you have the keys.

Parking restriction

On request, we apply in good time for the parking restriction zone outside your new address in Hagen, so that the lorry can stop right outside the front door on moving day.
FIRST STEPS

Arriving in Hagen: What Comes First

The removal van is empty – now the settling in begins. Newcomers to Hagen should take care of these six points in the first few weeks; we handle transport, assembly and the parking restriction, while the visits to the authorities are up to you.

01

Registration within two weeks

Under § 17 BMG, you register at one of Hagen's four citizens' offices within two weeks of moving in. It is best to book the appointment before moving day.
02

Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)

Without your landlord's confirmation (§ 19 BMG), registration in Hagen will not work. Ask for it at the key handover at the latest.
03

Choosing a borough

Hagen has five city districts: Mitte with Wehringhausen, Nord with Boele and Vorhalle, Eilpe/Dahl as the largest, Haspe in the west and Hohenlimburg with its castle.
04

Bus instead of tram

There has been no tram since 1976; 41 bus lines, two express buses and ten night express lines connect the districts and run as far as Dortmund.
05

Bulky waste with the HEB

The HEB collects bulky waste by appointment, customer office 02331 3544-4444. There are recycling centres in Haspe and at Am Pfannenofen, among others.
06

Re-register your car

If you bring a car, report the new address to the vehicle registration authority without delay (§ 15 FZV); you may keep your existing number plate.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Shared Load to Hagen

For a room, studies, a probation period

If you move to Hagen for on-campus study at the university of applied sciences or for a first job, you often bring only a few pieces of furniture. With a shared load, your belongings use free load space on a trip heading for Hagen. We agree collection in Berlin and delivery in advance; this trip is also covered under the HGB.

GUIDE

Hagen
for Newcomers

Papers, neighbourhood, routes

Anyone moving to Hagen has quite a lot to do in the first few weeks: an appointment at one of the four citizens' offices to register within two weeks – the city releases appointments on Mondays for the week after next –, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) and the registration form. EU citizens go to the Zentrales Bürgeramt. Then there is bulky waste with the HEB, nursery and school places, and the choice of district between the city centre, the hillside locations and the greenery around Lake Hengstey. This guide brings together the most important steps for the first few weeks.

Paperwork and deadlines

There is a deadline for registration at one of Hagen's four citizens' offices: two weeks after moving in. Keep your ID and landlord confirmation to hand and book an appointment early. Your bank, insurers and employer also need your new address in Hagen.

Flat and neighbourhood

Take a look at your future neighbourhood – whether Wehringhausen, Boele or Hohenlimburg – once at rush hour, and clarify the floor, lift and access. We also need this information for the fixed price of your move to Hagen.

Organising everyday life

41 bus lines of the Hagener Straßenbahn AG run through the city, and ICE trains and S-Bahn services stop at the main station. Via the A 1, A 45 and A 46, Dortmund, Wuppertal and the Sauerland are close by. Ask the City of Hagen about school places early.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Hagen

Registration, neighbourhoods, transport links and moving to Hagen – answered briefly.
