Moving to Hagen: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Hagen
Moving to Hagen: steep streets, four rivers, five boroughs
Guide
Hagen lies on the south-eastern edge of the Ruhr area and is often called the "Gateway to the Sauerland". The Ruhr, Lenne, Volme and Ennepe rivers flow through the city, 42 per cent of its area is forest – and many streets are steep: in Wehringhausen, Ewaldstraße, Rehstraße and Tunnelstraße have gradients of 26 to 27 per cent, and Treppenstraße in Altenhagen even 28 per cent. For a move to Hagen this means we clarify in advance where the vehicle can stop safely and how long the carrying distances are.
We take care of packing, transport, furniture assembly and, on request, storage in Berlin. We quote the fixed price after a survey, whether your new home is in Emst, Eilpe or Haspe. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. The journey from Berlin via the A2 is described on the page Moving Berlin – Hagen; details of our services can be found under Private move.

After a survey, with every item listed
After a survey you receive a binding quote for your move to Hagen, including travel, staff and vehicle. Whether it is a small flat in Hagen-Mitte or an entire household moving to Hohenlimburg – the fixed price is set beforehand. That way you keep your budget for the deposit and renovation in view.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Hagen
Planning in Berlin, arrival on the Volme
We have no branch in Hagen; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit, and with breaks the vehicle covers the roughly 505 km in about seven and a half hours. That is why we ask in advance how steep the street is, where the vehicle can stop and how many steps there are up to the flat. We apply for the parking restriction by email to the city's traffic department. We quote the fixed price after the survey.

Well planned to Hagen
Our prices for a move to Hagen depend on the size of the flat, the floor, the distance and any additional services you require. You can see the guide prices for typical flat sizes in the following overview.
Arrival time set
Hillside location checked
Parking zone in good time
Planned backwards
Storage to bridge a gap

Part load: move affordably
For smaller volumes, a part load to or from Hagen can be cheaper: your belongings travel together with other consignments on the same route via the A2. This suits, for example, staff of the FernUniversität (distance-learning university), commuters or single pieces of furniture, provided there is some flexibility on the delivery day.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Hagen involves a number of tasks: registering at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks, giving notice on your old flat, electricity and internet contracts and choosing the right district – in a city with many hillside locations. On moving day, the parking restriction and access are what count; the city of Hagen issues the exemption permit by email. How the journey from Berlin works is explained under Moving Berlin – Hagen.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Hagen
Districts in Hagen: from Wehringhausen to Hohenlimburg
Hagen is divided into five boroughs with many districts. Hagen-Mitte, with the Volme-Galerie, Rathaus-Galerie and the main station, offers short distances. Wehringhausen is a densely built-up quarter of old buildings with some of the steepest streets in the city; Altenhagen is similarly steep. In Haspe, once an independent neighbouring town, stood the Hasper Hütte ironworks, which was shut down by 1982; in Eilpe, the Lange Riege terrace of 1661 recalls the blade smiths of the Volme valley. Emst and Boele are quieter residential areas.
A special case is Hohenlimburg: an independent town until 1975, with a castle above the Lenne valley and around 24,000 inhabitants today. Vorhalle is home to Hagen-Vorhalle station, one of the largest marshalling yards in Germany. Whichever district you choose, we plan your move to Hagen according to gradient, parking situation and access route.
FernUniversität, museums and everyday life in Hagen
Hagen is home to the FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany's only state distance-learning university; with around 78,700 students (2021) it is the largest university in the country, and since 2012 Hagen has carried the addition "City of the FernUniversität" on its town signs. Most students, however, study from home. Other important institutions are the South Westphalian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Sparkasse an Volme und Ruhr savings bank and the Märkische Bank. We do not quote specific rents; they depend heavily on location and condition.
Culturally, Hagen has the Osthaus Museum and the Emil Schumacher Museum in the Kunstquartier, plus the Historisches Centrum and the LWL Open-Air Museum Hagen in the Mäckingerbach valley. As the "Gateway to the Sauerland", Hagen combines city life with plenty of forest. The main station is an important long-distance, regional and S-Bahn station, and the A1, A45 and A46 motorways run through the city – good for commuters and for the removal lorry from Berlin.

Moving price check: these factors count
Besides the volume, the distance (from €3.95/km) is decisive for the price. Structural factors such as the floor and lift, as well as a parking restriction zone, can increase the effort further. We are also happy to support you with furniture assembly and part loads.

Applying for a parking restriction for your move in Hagen
If you want to park the removal van directly in front of your door in Hagen, you need a temporary parking restriction. According to the city of Hagen, the traffic department issues an exemption permit for removals, kitchen installations and other lorry deliveries. You submit the application by email to [email protected].
In the application you state the exact moving day, the moving time (from – to) and the registration number of the removal vehicle. According to the city, the traffic signs 283-10 and 283-20 StVO (start and end of the no-stopping zone) must be put up three full working days before moving day. Local sign companies can hire out or put up the signs for a fee.
- Fees according to the city of Hagen: 20 euros for one day, 40 euros for two days and 70 euros for three to seven days.
- Important note from the city: the exemption permit is valid for one day only and cannot be extended.
- Lead time: submit the application early enough for the signs to be in place on time and for the traffic department to be able to reply.
As a rule of thumb: fix the date and time of the move first before sending the application, because later changes cause additional effort. How we organise this step for you is explained on the page Parking restriction zone.
Registration, citizens' offices and bulky waste in Hagen
After moving in, you must register with the registration authority within two weeks. The city of Hagen offers registration free of charge; you need the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), the completed and signed form and a valid identity card. An appointment is required for most matters, which you can book at terminvergabe.hagen.de or by phone on 02331/207-5777.
- Central citizens' office (Zentrales Bürgeramt): in the Volme Forum in the city centre (58095 Hagen).
- Other citizens' offices: Boele (Schwerter Straße 168), Haspe (Kölner Straße 1) and Hohenlimburg (Freiheitstraße 3).
- New since 15 September 2026: the city processes moves by EU citizens only at the central citizens' office.
Clearing out before the move can also be planned. Hagen's waste management company (HEB) collects bulky waste by appointment; you can reach the customer office on 02331 3544 4444. According to HEB, the lead time is several weeks, and the basic price is 25 euros (including travel, 15 minutes of loading time and 200 kg). Moving boxes and cardboard do not count as bulky waste. On collection day the bulky waste must be ready at ground level and easily accessible for the collection vehicle, and someone must be present; this can also be a neighbour or relative. Alternatively, you can drop off bulky waste for a fee at the recycling centre of the waste incineration plant (Am Pfannenofen 39).
More about the city can be found on our page Moving company Hagen and in the guide for newcomers.
