A move from Berlin to Mannheim often has professional reasons. After Stuttgart, Mannheim is the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and the centre of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region with around 2.4 million inhabitants; the city's large companies include Daimler, ABB, John Deere and Roche. Many also come to study: the University of Mannheim uses most of the Baroque palace, one of the largest palace complexes anywhere. We bring your household goods over the roughly 617 kilometres, carefully packed and on the agreed date.
The return move from Mannheim to Berlin has just as many reasons: a new job in the capital, family, friends or big-city life. 617 km: Thuringia, Wetterau, Darmstadt, Viernheim
The fastest way to the Rhine and Neckar does not go via Nuremberg. From Moabit the lorry takes the city motorway and the AVUS onto the Berlin ring road and the A9 to the Hermsdorf interchange. There it switches to the A4 heading west, past Erfurt and Eisenach to the Kirchheim interchange, and shortly afterwards onto the A5 at the Hattenbach interchange. After around 149 km past Giessen and Frankfurt, the A67 takes over at the Darmstadt interchange; after around 38 km it joins the A6 at the Viernheim interchange. From there it is only a few kilometres into the city – around 617 km altogether.
On the motorway lorries over 3.5 t are limited to 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after no more than four and a half hours of driving time a 45-minute break is mandatory (EU Regulation 561/2006). The pure driving time is a good eight hours, approx. 9 hrs with the break. With loading and unloading that is too long for one driver – we drive in pairs or split it over two days. The same calculation applies in the opposite direction.
Arriving in Mannheim: squares and 17 city districts
Mannheim is divided into 17 city districts, six inner and eleven outer. The city centre consists of the squares (Quadrate): the blocks carry a letter and a number – the town hall, for example, is in E5. Around the city centre lie districts such as Jungbusch, Neckarstadt-West and Lindenhof, and further out Feudenheim, Käfertal, Neckarau or Vogelstang. Tell us the square and house number when you enquire, and we will clarify access, floor and parking in advance; we apply for the parking restriction with the responsible road traffic authority.
On the return move to Berlin we drive to any district, whether Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Pankow or Spandau. We apply for the parking restriction via the district office and plan access to suit the building. In both cities you have two weeks after moving in to register with the registration authority.
