Moving from Berlin to Zug (Switzerland) – and back

Moving company Berlin
From Moabit to Lake Zug: moving Berlin ↔ Zug
Move without stress
Zug lies on the north-eastern shore of Lake Zug, at the foot of the Zugerberg – and outside the EU customs union. For your move from Berlin to Zug, your household goods are therefore declared at the border as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut), with form 18.44 and an inventory list that we draw up together at the survey. We come from Berlin, from Stromstraße 21 in Moabit, and drive with the same team right up to your new front door. We then set the fixed price in writing; you can add packing, assembly and piano transport as needed.
Around 875 kilometres and approx. 13 hrs by lorry including breaks are more than one driver is allowed to drive in a day: EU Regulation 561/2006 limits daily driving time to nine hours. For Zug we therefore plan two drivers taking turns or an overnight stay, and schedule the border crossing within the opening hours of the customs office. Lorries over 3.5 t are not allowed to drive in Switzerland between 10 pm and 5 am. For damage we are liable under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per cubic metre); optional additional insurance is available on request. We handle the move from Zug to Berlin in exactly the same way.

FAQ on long-distance moves in both directions
From Berlin to Zug and back: what customs requires
Anyone moving from Berlin to Zug is moving their residence to Switzerland and thus across a customs border. Household goods that you have used for at least six months and continue to use in Zug remain free of duty as removal goods – declared with the signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof of the change of residence. We handle the transport from the Berlin flat to your address in Zug, with furniture assembly and unpacking on request.
The way back to Berlin works in reverse order: the Swiss export customs office receives an inventory list with the old and new address, and in Germany you declare the removal goods to customs – free of duty if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months. For the return move from Zug to Berlin you also receive a fixed price after the survey; liability is under the HGB.
Route: around 875 km via Lindau, the Walensee and the Hirzel
Via the AVUS (A115) and the A10 we join the A9 to Nuremberg, take the A6 to the Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim interchange, the A7 to Memmingen and the A96 to Lindau. Through the Pfänder tunnel of the Austrian A14 we drive into the Rhine valley, on the Swiss A13 to Sargans and on the A3 along the Walensee and Lake Zurich to Wädenswil; over the Hirzel and a short stretch of the Swiss A14 we reach Zug. Around 875 km, approx. 13 hrs by lorry including breaks.
In Germany, lorries over 3.5 t drive at a maximum of 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after four and a half hours of driving time a 45-minute break follows. The route exceeds one day's driving time: two drivers taking turns or an overnight stay before the border, with the customs declaration on a working day. Because lorries over 3.5 t are not allowed to drive in Switzerland from 10 pm to 5 am, we arrive in Zug during the day. The return move takes the same route.
Arriving in Zug: registration office, quarter, access
Zug is the capital of the canton of the same name and stretches from the north-eastern shore of Lake Zug up the lower slopes of the Zugerberg; besides the old town and the quarters on the Lorze plain, the town also includes the village of Oberwil on the lakeshore. Zug has almost grown together with Baar, Cham and Steinhausen – but these are separate municipalities, and for registration it is the municipality of your new address that counts. There you register within 14 days at the residents' registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle), and foreign nationals additionally at the cantonal migration office.
For the return move to Berlin you deregister in Zug within 14 days and register in Berlin within two weeks at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt). We apply for the parking restriction at the Berlin address at the road traffic authority of the district office; the signs must be in place 72 hours beforehand. For both addresses we need the floor, lift and access early, so that lorry size and carrying distances are right.

What determines the price of your move to Zug
The largest share is the volume. On the Berlin–Zug route, the distance (around 875 km), the LSVA, the lorry toll in Austria, the customs declaration and two drivers or an overnight stay are added. Further factors: floor, lift and additional services such as furniture assembly or a parking restriction zone. Small quantities become cheaper with a part load.
