Moving to Bonn: Beethoven's city, the UN Campus and the Rhine
explained in brief
With around 324,000 residents, Bonn is one of the twenty largest cities in Germany and lies on the Rhine in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia. The former capital is now a federal city and UN city: United Nations organisations work on the UN Campus, and Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom have their headquarters here. Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770, and the university, founded in 1818, shapes Poppelsdorf and the city centre. If you are planning a move to Bonn, think early about the parking restriction, registration and bulky waste.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 597 km by lorry via the A2, A1 and A3 to Bonn; that is about 8.5 hours including a break. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Bonn or from Bonn back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Bonn. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often cheaper. We build parking spaces at both addresses into the plan. We coordinate dates with your flat handover.

Our part of your move to Bonn
Planned from Berlin, arriving on the Rhine
We do not have a branch in Bonn; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we check access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the Südstadt, a flat in Poppelsdorf or a house in Bad Godesberg. We apply for the parking restriction outside your new address in good time according to the city's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

For smaller volumes or single items, a shared load to Bonn can be cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments on the same route. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day; we will tell you after your enquiry whether a run towards Bonn fits. This is also handy if a few items are to follow after the main move.

Moving
& transport from a single source
A move to Bonn raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get into the late-19th-century streets of the Südstadt, who approves the parking restriction and how does registration work? This guide introduces the four districts of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg, with neighbourhoods such as Poppelsdorf and Endenich, explains bulky waste via bonnorange, parking restrictions and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), and describes the journey of around 597 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Bonn
Bonn's districts and neighbourhoods at a glance
Bonn is divided into four districts – Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg – with a total of 51 localities. Bad Godesberg in the south was once a town in its own right and is characterised by villas and former embassy buildings. Poppelsdorf, with Poppelsdorf Palace, is close to the university and popular with students and staff. The Südstadt and Nordstadt have many late-19th-century buildings with cafés and short distances to the centre.
On the right bank of the Rhine lies Beuel, connected to the city centre by the Kennedy Bridge. Hardtberg with Duisdorf in the west is quieter, and Endenich lies between the city centre and Hardtberg. The university hospital is on the Venusberg. Which location suits you depends on your commute, budget and type of housing; for the move, access, floor and stairwell matter most.
Flat hunting and employers in Bonn
The housing market in Bonn is in demand, especially in central locations such as the Südstadt or Poppelsdorf. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition. If you are flexible, also look at neighbouring towns such as Alfter or Bornheim. Register early with property portals and have documents such as proof of income ready so you can accept quickly.
Bonn is a UN city: United Nations organisations work on the UN Campus, alongside federal ministries and authorities. The DAX companies Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom have their headquarters in Bonn, and the university and the university hospital are also major employers. If you are coming to start a new job, fix the moving date early so that the parking restriction and registration fit into the first two weeks.

What does a move cost – and why?
Every move is calculated individually. The decisive factors are the volume of the furniture, the distance (from €4.20/km) and the floor and lift situation. If a parking restriction zone is needed, the price rises slightly. With a shared load you can often save.

Bulky waste when moving in Bonn: collection date, 5 m³ and recycling centre
Before a move there is usually bulky waste. In Bonn, bonnorange offers bulky waste collection. According to bonnorange, there are three fixed collection dates and an individual appointment that every household can book. Both come "at no extra charge". You arrange the individual appointment via the online form or by phone on 0228 – 555 27 20 (Monday to Thursday 7.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., Friday 7.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.).
For the individual appointment, the amount of bulky waste is limited to a maximum of 5 cubic metres. The items must be at the edge of the pavement by 7 a.m. at the latest on collection day, without obstructing or endangering others. So plan the appointment for before moving day, so that your lorry is not standing between the furniture at the roadside. Which items count as bulky waste is listed on bonnorange's "What is included?" page.
Alternatively, Bonn residents can take bulky waste to the recycling centres themselves; according to bonnorange this is subject to a fee. Larger quantities are intended for the Bonn waste incineration plant (MVA). The specific fees for bulky waste are set out in the fee regulations of the Federal City of Bonn; we deliberately do not give an amount here. If you need to clear an entire flat, our house clearance can help. How the move to Bonn works overall can be found on the Bonn location page.
Bonn: registration, landlord confirmation and parking restrictions when moving
Anyone moving into a flat in Bonn must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in under § 17 (1) of the Federal Registration Act (BMG). For this the law requires a confirmation from the landlord (§ 19 BMG). It may only be issued by the landlord or a person they have authorised, and it includes, among other things, their name and address, the date of moving in, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register. So ask your landlord for it before you move in.
Who approves your parking restriction is governed by the Road Traffic Regulations: under § 46 (1) StVO, road traffic authorities may in certain individual cases grant exemptions from prohibitions, such as no-stopping and no-parking restrictions. In Bonn the application for a private move therefore goes through the municipal road traffic authority. The city sets the deadline and fee. Submit the application early, ideally as soon as the moving date is fixed, because authorities need time to review it and issue a decision, and the parking restriction must be signposted in advance.
Whether in Poppelsdorf, Bad Godesberg or elsewhere: moving day depends on the lorry being allowed to stand outside the building. How we take care of the application and signage is explained under Parking restriction zone. Everyday topics after moving in are covered in the guide to living in Bonn.
