Arriving in Duisburg: where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine

Life by the port

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and brings your household goods around 547 km via the A2, A3 and A59 to Duisburg.

Duisburg lies at the confluence of the Ruhr and the Rhine, where the Lower Rhine and the Ruhr area meet. With around half a million inhabitants, it is the fifth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The port, centred on Ruhrort, is regarded as the largest inland port in the world, and a large share of Germany's pig iron comes from Duisburg's blast furnaces. This guide shows what newcomers deal with in the first few weeks: registration, finding the right district, public transport, bulky waste and flat hunting.

We have no branch in Duisburg; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 547 km to Duisburg via the A2, A3 and A59, about eight hours by lorry including breaks. Whether it is a period flat in Neudorf, a flat in Hochfeld or a house in Rheinhausen: we plan your private move at a fixed price after a survey. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Duisburg.

Fixed-price quote for Duisburg

Fixed price after a survey

For your move to Duisburg we look at your household goods, floor and access – on site in Berlin or by video call – and then give you a fixed price. Parking restriction, furniture lift, assembly and storage appear as separate items in the quote. Call us on 01625978461.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Our planning for your move-in

Clarify first, then drive

We have no base in Duisburg; we drive over by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify in advance what matters on arrival day: the stairwell of a period building in Neudorf or the Dellviertel, the densely built streets of Hochfeld, access to a house in Rheinhausen or Homberg on the left bank of the Rhine. We apply to the city for a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside the door so that the removal van can stand close to the entrance. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB) at €620 per cubic metre of loading space; additional insurance is available. We set the delivery day so that you can register within 14 days.

Packing help

On request we fill the boxes ourselves and write the destination room on them, so that everything quickly finds its place in Duisburg – with our packing service.

Business relocation

If an office is moving to Duisburg, we number desks, files and computers so that everything arrives in the right place – with an office move.

Older people

Anyone moving to Duisburg later in life to join family gets help with sorting out and a fully set-up bedroom on the first evening – with a senior move.

Bulky items

We measure wardrobes and sofas in advance so that they fit through the door and stairwell in Duisburg; otherwise we plan in a lift – with furniture transport.
HOW WE WORK

How we plan the route to the Rhine and Ruhr

The fixed price for your move to Duisburg is based on volume, floor, carrying distances and the roughly 547 km from Berlin. Parking restriction, furniture lift, assembly and any storage appear as individual items in the quote.

01

Date in writing

The quote states when loading and delivery take place. With around eight hours of driving including breaks, we usually plan a move to Duisburg over two days.
02

Stairs and lift

We look at the route from the removal van into the flat beforehand – in Duisburg it determines the number of movers for the move.
03

Space for the van

We apply to the city for the parking restriction zone outside your new address in Duisburg – in good time before the move.
04

Deadlines in view

Working from the start of your tenancy, we set: notice in Berlin, packing days, parking restriction and registration within 14 days for your move to Duisburg.
05

Flat not yet available?

If the start of your tenancy doesn't match your move-out, we store the furniture temporarily in Berlin until the key in Duisburg is ready – as part of the move.
06

Living in straight away

We assemble the beds first, then wardrobes and the kitchen, so that your first night in Duisburg isn't spent among boxes – after the move.
SHARED CARGO SPACE

Small moves to Duisburg

Few belongings, small price

If you are moving to study at the University of Duisburg-Essen or are only bringing a few pieces of furniture, you can save with a shared load: your things travel together with other consignments heading for the Ruhr area. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day. We clarify on the phone whether it is worthwhile for your volume.

What comes first

After moving into Duisburg, according to the city you have 14 days to register – online with your ID card, its online function and a BundID account, or at a citizens' service station (Bürger-Service-Station), both free of charge. Which station is responsible depends on your district. If you are bringing a car, change the vehicle address; you book bulky waste collections with the municipal services company. You get around by tram, bus and the DVG light rail, which runs jointly with Düsseldorf's Rheinbahn. The sections below set out what the city itself says about this.

Registration and papers

ID card with online function or an appointment at the citizens' service station, landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), then the vehicle address: if you clarify this before a private move, senior move or student move to Duisburg, you save trips.

Every flat is different

A period flat in Neudorf, a flat in the Dellviertel or a house in Rheinhausen: with a packing service, furniture transport and – where needed – small transport, the process fits your address in Duisburg.

Costs and special cases

The cost depends on volume, floor and the roughly 547 km from Berlin. For a few pieces of furniture there is the shared load; we plan an office move, company move or furniture taxi to Duisburg after a survey.

FAQ

Questions about a fresh start in Duisburg

Districts, registration, work, university and public transport – answered briefly.
The Süd district, with Wedau, Bissingheim and Buchholz, has plenty of greenery: the Six Lakes, the sports park and the city forest are there. On the left bank of the Rhine, Rheinhausen and Homberg offer quieter residential areas. Clarify nursery and school places directly with the city as soon as your new address is fixed; if possible, register your child before the move.

Seven districts, 46 neighbourhoods

Since 1975 Duisburg has consisted of 46 neighbourhoods in seven districts: Walsum, Hamborn, Meiderich/Beeck, Homberg/Ruhrort/Baerl, Mitte, Rheinhausen and Süd. Each district has its own district office. With just over 111,000 inhabitants, Mitte is the only district with a six-figure population; it includes the city centre, the Dellviertel, Neudorf, Duissern and Hochfeld, which, with around 15,000 inhabitants per km², is one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods.

Most of the city lies on the right bank of the Rhine; Rheinhausen and Homberg are on the left. Ruhrort is the centre of the port, with the Museum of German Inland Navigation. The largest district by area, Süd, includes Wedau, Bissingheim and Buchholz, as well as the Six Lakes (Sechs-Seen-Platte) and the city forest. Because of mining subsidence, a third of Duisburg's residents live below the water level of the Rhine, protected by dykes and pumping stations.

Work, study, weekends

The port and logistics – Duisburg is regarded as one of the hubs of Central Europe – shape the economy, as does the iron and steel industry with its blast furnaces. The University of Duisburg-Essen was formed in 2003 from the universities of both cities and, with around 42,000 students, is one of the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Düsseldorf Airport lies just beyond the city boundary, seven minutes by train from the main station. Duissern is home to the operations centre of DB InfraGO, which monitors rail traffic throughout North Rhine-Westphalia.

In your free time, there is the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord on a former ironworks site in Meiderich, the Six Lakes with 150 hectares of water in the south, the zoo with its dolphinarium and the Inner Harbour with restaurants and the Museum Küppersmühle. The Lehmbruck Museum with its sculpture park stands in the Kantpark. The Filmforum on Dellplatz is one of the oldest municipal cinemas in Germany. We don't quote specific rents without a reliable source.

From Berlin to the Rhine and Ruhr – and back

We plan moves from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit, to Duisburg as well as back to Berlin. How the roughly 547 km via the A2, A3 and A59 work is explained on the page Moving Berlin – Duisburg.

Registering in Duisburg: citizens' service stations and eID

According to the city, anyone moving to Duisburg must register within 14 days. This can be done online or at a citizens' service station; both are free of charge. For online registration you need an ID card with the online function activated and its PIN, an NFC-enabled smartphone or card reader, the AusweisApp and a BundID account. The service is open to German and EU/EEA nationals; it starts at wohnsitzanmeldung.de. The address stickers for your ID card are sent by post to your new address.

Tenants need the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung); owners whose property is not yet entered in the land register also need proof of ownership. If you are coming from another city, have your birth, marriage or naturalisation certificate ready. There are seven citizens' service stations: Walsum, Hamborn, Meiderich/Beeck, Homberg/Ruhrort/Baerl, Mitte, Rheinhausen and Süd. An appointment via the city's booking system is required for a visit. Foreign nationals with tenancy agreements from 1 July 2024 are registered at the citizens' service; people with a residence permit pending asylum (Aufenthaltsgestattung) or a tolerated stay (Duldung) at the Office for Integration and Immigration Services.

Your vehicle also needs a new address: within Duisburg you change it at a citizens' service station, and if you are moving from elsewhere, at the road traffic office. You can reach the city administration on 0203 94000 (Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sat 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Everything else about the move can be found under Moving in Duisburg and in the re-registration guide.

There is also the on-demand service myBUS.

Waste is the responsibility of the Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg (WBD), which also clean the streets and maintain green spaces. You book bulky waste collections online or by phone on (0203) 283-5000, and the information line is (0203) 283-3000 (Mon to Fri, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.). WBD also offers an online waste calendar and a WBD app with the collection dates for your address. You apply for housing benefit via the Gemeinsam-Online service portal; the city links to a housing benefit calculator. More detail on districts and costs: Duisburg moving guide.
