Moving to Mönchengladbach: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Mönchengladbach
Moving to Mönchengladbach – Gladbach, Rheydt and Wickrath
Guide
A move to Mönchengladbach takes you to a city on the Lower Rhine with around 267,000 inhabitants, about 25 km west of Düsseldorf. Today's city was formed in 1975 from Mönchengladbach, Rheydt and Wickrath – which is why it is the only city in Germany with two main railway stations. We plan your private move or company relocation around the parking restriction, access and stairwell, and quote the fixed price after the survey.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 599 km via the A2 and the Ruhr area; by lorry that is about 8.5 hours including breaks, so we usually plan two days. The route is described in Moving Berlin – Mönchengladbach.

Moving to Mönchengladbach: survey first, then a fixed price
Volume, floor, route – all in the price
We do not calculate the price of your move to Mönchengladbach by the hour, but by volume, floor, carrying distances and the route of around 599 km. After a survey you receive a written fixed price – for a flat in Rheydt just as for a house in Odenkirchen.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Mönchengladbach works with us
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We have no branch in Mönchengladbach; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in Rheydt or a house in Odenkirchen. For the removal van, Mönchengladbach issues a special parking permit (Ausnahmegenehmigung) for home moves; the signs must be up at least 4 calendar days in advance – we agree the schedule with you. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Mönchengladbach
Four boroughs, 44 districts: Mönchengladbach at a glance
Since 2009, Mönchengladbach has consisted of four boroughs – Nord, Ost, Süd and West – with a total of 44 districts. The city within its present boundaries came into being on 1 January 1975, when Mönchengladbach was merged with the town of Rheydt and the municipality of Wickrath. The centre around the Abteiberg and Bökelberg is comparatively hilly, as is the south around Odenkirchen.
Large parts of the city are covered by woods and parks, such as the Hardter Wald. In the Nordpark, a former military site, are the Borussia-Park stadium and businesses. For the move, the specific address counts – an older building without a lift needs more carriers than a new build. Our private move service adapts accordingly.
University, Nordpark and Borussia: who moves to Mönchengladbach
Mönchengladbach is a regional centre (Oberzentrum) in the Düsseldorf administrative district and part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. Together with the Hochschule Niederrhein (Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences), the city's economic development agency focuses on pillars such as textiles and fashion, mechanical and electrical engineering, and logistics. We do not quote specific rents; they depend heavily on the district and condition.
With Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof and Rheydt Hauptbahnhof, the city has two main stations. After moving in, you register within two weeks – according to the city online free of charge or by appointment at a registration office. For routes from Berlin you will find everything under Long-distance moves.

Parking restriction for your move in Mönchengladbach: application, deadline and fees
For the removal van in front of your door, Mönchengladbach issues the special parking permit for home moves (Ausnahmegenehmigung, § 46 StVO). According to the city, the responsible office is the StVO permits department (Erlaubnisse nach der StVO), Alsstraße 126, 41063 Mönchengladbach (email [email protected]). The application can be made online or in writing. The city gives these key facts:
- Parking restriction signs must be up at least 4 calendar days before the move.
- Fees: €24.00 for up to 3 days, €36.00 for up to 7 days, €60.00 for up to 14 days.
- After the permit is granted, you hire the signs for a fee from a sign rental company; this is not included in the fee.
The permit covers two cases: parking restriction signs in front of the building and parking in otherwise closed areas such as pedestrian zones, existing no-stopping zones or on pavements. For such exceptions, according to the city, the application must be made in writing at least 4 weeks before the move because of possible postal delays. According to the city, processing takes place immediately once all documents are available; personal advice is available after booking an appointment online. So plan for both deadlines: first the permit, then the signs.
How we organise this for you is described under Parking restriction zone; what we offer for moves within the city is on the page Removal company Mönchengladbach.
Mönchengladbach: registration in Rheydt, boroughs and bulky waste
According to the city, Mönchengladbach is divided into the four boroughs of Nord, Ost, Süd and West with a total of 44 districts. New residents register within two weeks. According to the city, this can be done online free of charge without visiting an office, or by appointment via termine.moenchengladbach.de. The responsible office is the registration office (Meldestelle), Goebenstraße 4 to 8, 41061 Mönchengladbach; there are also registration offices in districts such as Rheydt, Hardt and Odenkirchen. You should bring your ID, the completed landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) and the registration form for the registration authority; registration is free of charge. Online, you upload the signed landlord confirmation and receive a digital confirmation; you update the address in your ID card with a sticker from the Bundesdruckerei (Federal Printing Office). The borough administrations are at Albertusstraße 17 (Nord), Liebfrauenstraße 52 (Ost), Stresemannstraße 64 (Süd) and Plektrudisstraße 25 to 27 in Rheindahlen (West).
For bulky waste before moving out, you deal with the municipal company mags. According to mags, it only collects bulky waste by prior appointment; booking is via the citizens' portal. The Service Center can be reached on 02161 4910-10 (Mon to Sat, 6 am to 8 pm). Ask about costs and deadlines in advance in the citizens' portal or at the Service Center. General tips: Disposing of bulky waste properly.
