Frequently asked questions about moving in Bonn

Answers on moving, costs, permits and registration in Bonn – with information from the City of Bonn and our price list, for better planning.

Bonn's old town and parts of the Südstadt are considered demanding because of narrow streets and limited parking. Here we generally recommend a reserved parking restriction zone to avoid long carrying distances.

How a move in Bonn works

A move in Bonn comes with some particularities that result from the federal city's location on the Rhine. Between the Siebengebirge hills, the Kottenforst woods and the riverbank lie narrow old-town streets, wide avenues in the federal quarter and quiet residential streets in the elevated parts of Bad Godesberg. For us this means: every job is planned individually – from the narrow roadway in Bonn's old town to the villa in Muffendorf.

The typical process starts with a free survey by video or by arrangement, followed by a fixed-price quote. We then clarify the organisational points: the permit to stop on moving day (see below), moving boxes and the date with the property management or landlord. On moving day we take care of packing, transport and reassembly at your new home; on request also furniture assembly, kitchen dismantling and disposal of old furniture.

Bonn is connected via the A555, A59, A565 and A562 motorways. At the same time, one-way streets around the Markt, Münsterplatz and the old town call for precise route planning. If you are moving between the two banks of the Rhine, for example from the Südstadt to Beuel, we factor in the bridges: the Kennedybrücke, Nordbrücke and Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke are very busy at peak times. Our team comes from Berlin-Moabit, around 597 kilometres away, and is at your door in the agreed time window.

Whether a private move, senior move or office move – we plan every move with foresight, with an eye on parking, roadworks and the permit, so that everything runs smoothly on moving day.

Four districts, 51 neighbourhoods: places to live in Bonn

Bonn is divided into the four districts of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg with a total of 51 neighbourhoods. For a move in Bonn, the location is decisive, because access routes, parking and the number of floors differ greatly between the city centre and the outer districts.

  • Central Bonn: Old town, Nordstadt and Südstadt with historic buildings, narrow streets and high demand for parking restriction zones
  • Poppelsdorf & Endenich: popular residential areas for students and young families near the university
  • Bad Godesberg: villa district, formerly home to many embassies, with spacious plots
  • Beuel: district on the right bank of the Rhine with residential and commercial buildings
  • Hardtberg (Duisdorf, Lengsdorf): residential areas with a connection to the A565
  • Venusberg: close to the University Hospital, popular with hospital staff
Neighbourhood/districtCharacterWhat it means for the move
Old town/centrehistoric, densely builtparking restriction zone usually advisable
Bad Godesbergvillas, former embassieslarger furniture, more staff needed
Poppelsdorf/Endenichstudent charactermany upper-floor flats without a lift
Beuelmixed residential/commercial areaaccess via the Rhine bridges
Hardtberg/Duisdorfresidential areasusually more parking

This variety makes Bonn a demanding city to move in. We clarify access for every address during the survey and adapt the vehicle size and staffing – from a compact van for the old town to a large removal lorry for Bad Godesberg.

What a move in Bonn costs

Moving costs in Bonn depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, the distance between the old and new address and any additional services required, such as a parking restriction zone or clearance. We calculate every move individually and place emphasis on fixed prices without hidden costs.

ServicePrice from
1-room flat€349
2-room flat€584
3-room flat€909
Long-distance move (per km)from €4.20
Parking restriction zone (per day)€30–100

In addition to the size of the flat, the location also plays a role in Bonn: a move out of Bonn's narrow old town or from a flat without a lift in Endenich usually needs more time and staff than a ground-level move in Hardtberg or Duisdorf. The parking situation around Münsterplatz or in the Südstadt can also cause additional costs for a parking restriction zone.

For students we offer special terms as part of our student move, as many flats around the University of Bonn are small and easy to plan. For long-distance moves, for example to Berlin or other federal states, the costs depend primarily on the distance driven and the volume. After a free survey, we are happy to prepare a non-binding, transparent quote tailored exactly to your living situation in Bonn.

Parking and permits in Bonn's residential areas

Anyone moving in Bonn knows the problem: in many streets of the old town, the Südstadt or around Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, parking is scarce and residents' parking is the rule. So that the removal van may stop right outside the door on moving day, the City of Bonn offers an exemption from stopping and parking bans for private moves.

Important: according to the city, you need a separate order for the moving-in and moving-out address, and no exemptions are granted for moves on Sundays and public holidays. So submit the application early and schedule the date on a working day or Saturday. Our price list states 30 to 100 euros per day for a parking restriction zone; the municipal fee is added.

  • Apply for a separate permit for each address
  • Particularly important in the densely built old town, Nordstadt and Südstadt
  • Also useful in Bad Godesberg on narrow villa streets
  • Avoids long carrying distances and lost time on moving day
  • No moves with a permit on Sundays and public holidays

Especially in districts such as Poppelsdorf or Endenich, where many students live and parking pressure rises due to the proximity to the university, timely planning pays off. In Beuel, too, where narrow streets meet traffic from the Rhine bridges, a reserved loading zone can speed things up. During the survey we tell you the length and period so that the application is submitted in time and your moving day runs without waiting times, fines or arguments with neighbours.

From Bonn to Cologne, the Ruhr area or Berlin

Bonn lies in the Rhineland and is connected to the trunk road network via the A555 towards Cologne, the A565 and the A59. From Bonn to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 597 road kilometres; we plan moves in both directions with a fixed arrival window and scheduled breaks for the team.

These cities in North Rhine-Westphalia have their own location page: in the Ruhr area and the Bergisches Land Duisburg, Essen, Oberhausen and Gelsenkirchen, as well as Bochum, Dortmund, Hamm, Hagen, Wuppertal and Krefeld.

For smaller volumes or single pieces of furniture there is the part load: your goods travel together with other transports heading in the same direction, which lowers the costs. For long distances, our price list states from 4.20 euros per kilometre, depending on the volume, floor and staff; the fixed price after a survey is binding.

We plan intermediate stops, loading and unloading times and routes so that your household goods arrive safely and within the agreed time window – whether your new home is in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or another German city. We discuss the exact process with you during the survey.

Services for your move in Bonn

For your move in Bonn, we as a Berlin moving company offer a wide range of services tailored to the different needs of individuals, families, students and businesses. From a small household liquidation to a complete company move, we handle every step from one source.

  • Private move – from a period flat in the Nordstadt to a villa in Bad Godesberg
  • Office move – for offices, practices and institutions throughout Bonn
  • Part load – affordable transport for smaller volumes
  • Clearance – thorough clearing of cellars, attics and flats
  • Parking restriction zone – organised securing of parking space in Bonn's narrow streets
  • Piano transport – safe transport of grand and upright pianos, including in period buildings
  • Senior move – considerate support when moving into assisted living
  • Student move – quick, affordable solutions around the University of Bonn

We clarify Bonn's residential situations address by address during the survey: narrow stairwells in the Südstadt, high floors without a lift in Endenich or steep driveways in Bad Godesberg. For bulky or fragile items such as grand and upright pianos, we plan additional staff and our own securing equipment so that these transports also go smoothly.

On request we also provide a packing service, furniture assembly and the proper disposal of items you no longer need. This way you get all moving services in Bonn conveniently from one source – reliably and on schedule.

Office and company moves in the federal quarter and around the UN Campus

As the former federal capital and today's "federal city" (Bundesstadt), Bonn is home to numerous institutions, authorities and international organisations – including the UN Campus, Deutsche Post DHL, Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Welle. This concentration of administrations, corporate headquarters and medium-sized companies makes a company move in Bonn a task that requires precise planning.

Our office move service covers all areas: from relocating individual office floors in the federal quarter and the complete move of a law firm in the city centre to relocating the storage and server rooms of medium-sized businesses in Beuel or Hardtberg. Important aspects include:

  • Moving outside business hours to minimise downtime
  • Safe dismantling and assembly of IT infrastructure and server cabinets
  • Labelling system for quick set-up at the new site
  • Coordination with facility management and building management
  • Discretion with sensitive documents and data carriers

Especially in the federal quarter around the former ministry buildings and in modern office complexes on the riverbank, tight time windows for deliveries and lift use are common. We coordinate early with property managers to organise delivery zones, lift reservations and any necessary parking restriction zones in good time.

For internationally active institutions based in Bonn, we plan the move of sensitive documents and high-quality office equipment with particular care. On request we also offer a combination of the move and a subsequent clearance of old furniture and files that are no longer needed, so that your new site is tidy and functional from the start.

Student moves around the University of Bonn and booking

With the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and several other higher-education institutions, numerous students move every semester to districts such as Poppelsdorf, Endenich, Auerberg or the Nordstadt. Our student move in Bonn is tailored specifically to small budgets, tight time windows at the change of semester and usually compact rooms in shared flats or one-room flats.

As many student flats are in period buildings without a lift, for example in the Südstadt or in Kessenich, we plan enough staff for carrying things up and down the stairs. At the same time we keep costs lean: a small move within Bonn is possible from 349 euros, supplemented if needed by an affordable part load if only a few pieces of furniture need to be transported.

Booking a move with Praktik Transport und Umzüge is as simple as it gets:

  • Send a free enquiry online or by phone
  • Receive an individual quote based on flat size and address
  • Confirm your preferred date and, if needed, commission a parking restriction zone at the same time
  • Receive packing materials and boxes in good time before the move
  • On moving day: pickup, transport and reassembly by our team

Especially at the start of semester in October and April, demand for moving dates in Bonn is particularly high; as we travel from Berlin, we recommend booking early. In addition to classic student moves, we also help with the clearance of rooms being vacated in shared flats and with moves involving special items such as instruments – for example a piano transport for an upright or grand piano.

Parking restriction for a move in Bonn: the city's exemption permit, costs and rules

On its portal, the City of Bonn offers "exemption permits from stopping and parking bans for private moves". You apply for the permit via an online form or by post; no user account is needed. It is usually granted for one vehicle, and the city ties it to vans carrying goods or furniture that cannot be carried far because of their value, weight or size. After review you receive written confirmation, and the fee is set by official notice.

For the costs, the city states graded amounts per vehicle:

  • one day including the parking restriction zone: 30 euros, for each additional vehicle 15 euros, for a trailer 7.50 euros
  • three days: 48 euros
  • one week: 90 euros

Two rules are important: you need a separate order for the moving-in and moving-out address. In addition, no exemptions can be granted for moves on Sundays and public holidays, which is why you should schedule your date on a working day or Saturday. After the move, the signs must be removed again. You only receive the fee notice with the permit. How we combine the parking restriction and scheduling is explained on the parking restriction zone page; further cost factors are shown in the moving guide for Bonn.

Bonn: districts, citizens' offices and registration after the move

The federal city of Bonn is divided into the four districts of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg; each district has its own district council. The citizens' offices (Bürgerämter), where you register your residence after moving in, are distributed accordingly.

According to the City of Bonn, new residents must register within two weeks. You need the registration form, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), which has been mandatory for landlords since 2015, and the identity documents of everyone being registered. Appointments can be booked at the Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg citizens' offices; the Hardtberg office is at Villemombler Straße 1. According to the city, appointments in Bad Godesberg and Beuel can be booked no more than 14 days in advance. Anyone who is at least 18 years old, a German or EU citizen and able to use the online ID function with the AusweisApp can also register electronically via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de.

For citizens of non-EU countries: you register first and then apply to the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) for a residence permit. A second-home tax (Zweitwohnungssteuer) is also charged for a secondary residence in Bonn. Appointments and opening hours change, so check them in advance on bonn.de.
