Frequently asked questions about moving in Cologne
A move within Cologne starts from €349 for a 1-room flat, from €579 for a 2-room flat and from €879 for a 3-room flat. The exact price depends on the floor, distance and any additional services required.
Moving in Cologne: process, Rhine bridges and the Ring
A move in Cologne comes with some particular features that we, as a moving company from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), include in every plan. With around 1.1 million inhabitants, the cathedral city is the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and lies on both banks of the Rhine, crossed by striking bridges such as the Hohenzollern Bridge, the Deutz Bridge and the Severin Bridge. This division by the river means that moves between the Altstadt on the left bank and Deutz on the right bank often run over one of the bridges and the busy Cologne Ring – a factor we always take into account when planning routes.
The motorway network around Cologne is closely interlinked: the Cologne motorway ring is formed by the A1, A3 and A4, plus feeder roads such as the A57 and A59. From our location on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 574 road kilometres to Cologne, mostly via the A2 and A1; by lorry we allow about eight and a half hours including a break – important for planning the journey, loading and the time window at the destination.
Within the city, narrow lanes in the Altstadt, cobblestones and a dense public transport network run by the KVB (Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe) shape everyday life. For a smooth household move this means: precise clarification of the address, suitable vehicle sizes and often setting up a parking restriction zone to avoid long carrying distances. Our team plans every move in Cologne individually – from the initial survey and packing to assembling the furniture at the new home.
Seasonal factors also play a role: at the start of the semester at the University of Cologne, moving dates are typically in demand. Booking early secures your preferred date and avoids bottlenecks with parking permits or lift reservations in the city's apartment buildings.
9 city districts: residential areas in Cologne at a glance
Cologne is divided into nine city districts of very different character, which changes the requirements for vehicle, team and scheduling on every move in Cologne. The Innenstadt district with the Altstadt, Neustadt-Nord and Neustadt-Süd stands out for its historic buildings, narrow streets and little parking space – here a parking restriction zone almost always makes sense. On the right bank lies Deutz with the Koelnmesse exhibition centre and modern new builds, while Mülheim is considered an up-and-coming trendy area.
Those who prefer things quieter often move to Rodenkirchen with its locations near the Rhine and the villa district of Marienburg, or to Lindenthal with residential areas such as Braunsfeld and Junkersdorf. Sülz, Zollstock and the Zülpicher Straße around the University of Cologne have a student character – ideal for a straightforward student move. Ehrenfeld has developed from a working-class area into a creative, trendy neighbourhood with many period flats without a lift, which has to be taken into account in staff planning.
| Neighbourhood | Character | Moving considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Altstadt/Neustadt | Historic, central | Narrow streets, parking restriction needed |
| Ehrenfeld | Creative, period buildings | Often no lift, many stairs |
| Lindenthal | Upmarket, green | Large living spaces, villas |
| Sülz/Zollstock | Student area | Small shared flats, tight time windows |
| Deutz/Mülheim | Modern, right bank | New builds with lifts |
| Chorweiler | High-rise estates | Lift moves, large volumes |
For older Cologne residents moving, for example, from Rodenkirchen into an accessible flat, we also offer a sensitive senior move, in which pace and process are tailored to individual needs.
Moving costs in Cologne: prices and cost factors
Moving costs in Cologne depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, the distance, access to the street and any additional services required, such as packing or furniture assembly. The following guide values serve as a rough orientation for a move within Cologne or to the nearby surrounding area such as Bergisch Gladbach, Leverkusen or Frechen.
| Flat size | Price from |
|---|---|
| 1-room flat | €349 |
| 2-room flat | €579 |
| 3-room flat | €879 |
These prices are starting values for a standard move with good accessibility. In areas such as the Altstadt, Ehrenfeld or around the Zülpicher Platz, narrow lanes, missing lifts or restricted parking often add extra costs for carrying help or a parking restriction zone, which costs between €30 and €100 per day depending on location and duration.
Further cost factors are an upper floor without a lift, bulky items such as a piano – for which we offer dedicated piano transport – and the need for packing material or interim storage. If you only want to transport individual pieces of furniture, for example for a partial move to Cologne, you can also benefit from an affordable part load, in which the cargo space is shared with other moves.
Before moving in Cologne we recommend obtaining a free on-site survey or a quote based on photos. This avoids hidden costs, and you receive a transparent fixed-price quote that takes into account all the particularities of your Cologne location – from a period building in Nippes to a new-build flat in Deutz.
Parking restriction zone and parking when moving in Cologne
Parking space is scarce in many parts of Cologne, especially in the densely built-up Altstadt, in Ehrenfeld, in the Belgisches Viertel and around the Zülpicher Straße. A parking restriction zone applied for in good time is often the key to a smooth moving day here, as it secures a space right outside the front door and avoids long carrying distances through narrow stairwells.
The exemption permit is issued by the City of Cologne; according to the city, you should apply around three weeks before the date, which can also be done by email. For a parking restriction zone our price list states €30 to €100 per day, depending on location and duration. Especially in busy areas such as the Südstadt, Nippes or around the Neumarkt, the rule is: according to the city, the zone must be set up at least 96 hours before the moving date.
- Apply to the City of Cologne around three weeks in advance
- Set up the zone at least 96 hours before the move
- Have the signs put up clearly visible and legible
- Inform neighbours and residents about the restriction in good time
- If needed, plan additional no-stopping signs for loading vehicles
Which steps we take on for your parking restriction zone in Cologne is set out in the quote. What matters is that the application and signs fit the city's deadlines – then the removal van can stand right outside the door, whether you live in the Altstadt, in Rodenkirchen or in Chorweiler. Especially for moves with narrow access, as is typical of many of Cologne's late-19th-century buildings, a secured parking area makes the decisive difference to the speed and safety of the whole move.
From Cologne to Berlin or the Ruhr area
Thanks to the Cologne motorway ring formed by the A1, A3 and A4, Cologne is a good starting point for a long-distance move anywhere in Germany. Whether moving back to Berlin, to Lake Constance or to the neighbouring Rhineland – we set the vehicle size and team after the survey, for long distances just as for Cologne's city traffic.
For long-distance moves we calculate transparently from €3.85 per kilometre, depending on the volume, floor and additional services required. Besides classic complete moves, we also offer the more affordable part load, in which your household goods are transported together with other consignments – ideal for smaller volumes over longer distances.
We also handle moves within North Rhine-Westphalia, for example to Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Bochum, Krefeld and Wuppertal. For each of these cities you will find a dedicated location page with the rules of the local city administration.
For a long-distance move from Cologne, on request we take care of the complete logistics: proper packing, dismantling and assembly of furniture, loading with ratchet straps and blankets, and punctual delivery at the destination. For sensitive items such as a piano we offer a special piano transport with appropriate securing. That way even a journey of several hundred kilometres, for example between Cologne and Berlin, becomes a calculable and safe undertaking.
Services for your move in Cologne
As a moving company from Berlin-Moabit, we offer a comprehensive range of services for Cologne, tailored to the particularities of this Rhine metropolis. From a small student flat in Sülz to a large family villa in Marienburg – our team plans every move individually and with an eye on local conditions such as narrow streets of period buildings, the lift situation and traffic on the Cologne Ring.
- Household move – from assembling single pieces of furniture to a complete move including packing
- Company move – predictable, discreet and with minimal downtime for your business
- Part load – affordable transport for smaller volumes
- Clearance – professional clearing of flats, cellars and attics
- Parking restriction zone – application and set-up for a smooth moving day
- Piano transport – safe handling of upright and grand pianos
- Senior move – considerate and at an individual pace
- Student move – quick, straightforward and budget-friendly
Each of these services can be booked individually or in combination – for example a clearance of the old flat in Nippes combined with the actual move to Ehrenfeld. We set the vehicle and team strength after the survey. We ask in advance about typical features of Cologne's period buildings – narrow stairwells, high ceilings, delicate wooden floorboards – so that protective material and staff suit the building.
Office moves in Cologne: Mediapark, Deutz, Ossendorf
As a media and business location with the Mediapark, the Koelnmesse in Deutz and numerous companies in the city centre and in business parks such as Ossendorf or Marsdorf, Cologne is an important location for offices and company headquarters. A company move in Cologne therefore requires particularly careful planning so that ongoing business is affected as little as possible.
Our team takes care of the complete organisation of your company move: from dismantling and properly transporting the IT infrastructure and moving filing cabinets and server racks to reassembly on schedule at the new location. Especially in Cologne city centre, where many offices are housed in historic buildings with narrow corridors and limited lift capacity, detailed advance planning is crucial.
- Individual move planning including time windows outside business hours
- Safe transport of IT equipment, files and sensitive documents
- Arranging the necessary parking restriction zones for lorries and delivery traffic
- Assembly and dismantling of office furniture, shelving systems and reception areas
- Discreet handling, also in stages while operations continue
Whether a start-up from the Belgisches Viertel, a medium-sized company from Mülheim or a corporate branch near the Messe Deutz – we adapt our approach to the size and structure of your business. On request we also completely clear old office space as part of a clearance, so that the old premises can be handed over on schedule and swept clean. That way your company move in Cologne runs smoothly, professionally and with minimal interruption to day-to-day business.
Student moves around the Zülpicher Straße & booking
With the University of Cologne, TH Köln (University of Applied Sciences) and the German Sport University, Cologne is one of the largest university locations in Germany. Around the Zülpicher Straße, in Sülz, in the Kwartier Latäng and in Zollstock, many students move at every change of semester – often into shared flats with narrow stairwells and on a limited budget. Our student move is designed exactly for this: quick, straightforward and budget-conscious, ideal for the typical 1-room flats from €349.
So that your move in Cologne – whether as a student, family or business – runs smoothly, we follow a clear process:
- Enquiry: Non-binding contact by phone, form or email with initial details on the flat and moving date
- Survey: On-site appointment or assessment based on photos for an exact calculation
- Quote: Transparent fixed-price quote including all agreed services such as a parking restriction zone or packing material
- Date confirmation: Fixing the date, time and required team including vehicle size
- Moving day: Proper packing, transport and assembly at the new home in Cologne or elsewhere
Especially at the start of the semester we recommend booking early, as preferred dates around Cologne's universities are quickly booked up. For larger households or older customers we also offer a careful senior move. Whether a small shared flat in Ehrenfeld, a family flat in Rodenkirchen or an office at the Mediapark – we accompany you reliably through your entire move in Cologne, from the first enquiry to the last box.
Mobile parking restriction zone in Cologne: deadlines, fees and signs according to the City of Cologne
In Cologne, both private individuals and moving companies are entitled to apply. According to the City of Cologne, the application should be submitted in writing around three weeks before the date; no personal visit is necessary, and application and approval can also be handled by email. The zone must be set up at least 96 hours before the move. According to the city, a 7.5-tonne lorry needs about 15 metres.
- First day: 36 euros, each additional day: 18 euros.
- External lift: an additional 14 euros.
- Site inspection, if necessary: 48 euros plus a 6-euro travel allowance.
- You obtain two portable signs from a specialised company (category “Verkehrsabsicherung”, traffic safety); this incurs additional costs.
The permit generally only applies to one vehicle. Contact: [email protected], phone 0221 221-26387 (Mon to Fri, 8 am to 12 noon). If the date, time or address of an existing permit changes, the city charges 8.50 euros; for particular effort it states 12 euros per quarter of an hour or part thereof. You pay the fee by bank transfer after receiving the permit, quoting the payment reference (Kassenzeichen). Additional signs showing the date, start and end time go on the front of the signs, and the name, address and phone number of the permit holder on the back. How we support you is explained under parking restriction zone.
Moving in Cologne: city districts, registration at the customer centre and AWB bulky waste
According to the city, Cologne is divided into nine city districts and 86 neighbourhoods: Innenstadt, Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld, Nippes, Chorweiler, Porz, Kalk and Mülheim. Give your exact address when you enquire so that we can plan access and carrying distances.
After moving in, according to the City of Cologne you register within 14 days at a customer centre (Kundenzentrum) of your choice or online. On Mondays and Wednesdays this is possible without an appointment; on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays you need an appointment. Registration is free of charge; the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) cannot be submitted later, and a tenancy agreement is not sufficient.
For bulky waste, the AWB offers a free basic service up to 3 m³ with a lead time of approx. 3 weeks. The items must be placed clearly visible near the roadway by 7 am in the morning, not on private land. According to the AWB, the flex service takes place within two working days or on your preferred date if you call by 12 noon. Electrical appliances that are not permanently installed must be booked separately as waste electrical equipment with their own appointment. If you do not want to carry furniture to the kerb yourself, according to the AWB you can book the carry-out service; it costs 108 euros for the first hour.
