Your questions about moving in Dortmund
The costs depend on the size of the flat, the floor and the distance. As a guide: 1-room flat from €375, 2-room flat from €579 and 3-room flat from €879. After a short survey we prepare an individual fixed-price quote.
How a move in Dortmund works
A move in Dortmund has its own rules: with around 600,000 inhabitants, Dortmund is the largest city in Westphalia, divided into twelve districts from Mengede to Aplerbeck. Praktik Transport und Umzüge is not based here but at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; for your move the team travels by lorry, around 493 kilometres via the A2, and is at your door in the agreed time window.
It starts with a free survey by video or by arrangement. During this we record the amount of furniture, floor, lift and parking options. Especially in densely built neighbourhoods such as the Nordstadt or around the Westfalenhallen, the parking situation determines waiting times and effort. You then receive a fixed-price quote that also includes the journey to and from Berlin.
Destinations such as Dortmund harbour, the technology park at TU Dortmund or the Signal Iduna Park also affect planning, for example on match days or at company sites with their own access rules.
Our team takes care of:
- Packing and dismantling furniture
- Transport and reassembly in the new flat
- Coordinating the parking restriction with a traffic-sign company (see below)
- Final cleaning and handover of the old flat
Whether it is a private move in the city centre or a move to one of the outer districts – you have one dedicated contact person from planning to the last box.
Twelve districts: places to live in Dortmund
Dortmund is divided into twelve districts of very different character – an important factor in planning your move in Dortmund. Three of them form the city centre: Innenstadt-West, Innenstadt-Nord and Innenstadt-Ost. The Kreuzviertel, named after the Heilig-Kreuz church, is known for its period buildings and pubs; south-east of the old ring road lies the Kaiserviertel. If you prefer things quieter, you will find many detached houses in Aplerbeck, Brackel or Hombruch.
The Hörde district is home to PHOENIX See, where many new flats and terraced houses have been built in recent years; here the lift and underground car park are often decisive. The densely built Innenstadt-Nord, by contrast, requires good parking planning.
The remaining districts at a glance:
- Eving and Scharnhorst in the north
- Huckarde and Mengede in the north-west
- Lütgendortmund in the west
- Brackel and Aplerbeck in the east
Depending on the location, access routes, parking options and lift situation vary considerably. Many period buildings in the Kreuzviertel or the Nordstadt have no lift, so moving furniture over several floors needs more staff. We clarify this during the survey and plan crew size and materials accordingly. As we travel from Berlin, we include the journey to and from Dortmund firmly in the quote, so that you receive a clear fixed price for every district from Mengede to Aplerbeck.
What a move in Dortmund costs
Moving costs in Dortmund depend on several factors: the size of the flat, distance, floor, accessibility and any additional services needed, such as parking restriction zones or furniture assembly. We calculate transparently and without hidden costs – a fixed-price quote after a free survey is standard with us.
| Type of move | Starting price |
|---|---|
| 1-room flat | from €375 |
| 2-room flat | from €579 |
| 3-room flat | from €879 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €4.25/km |
| Parking restriction zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These guide prices apply to standard moves within Dortmund and the nearby Ruhr area. Additional costs may arise if, for example, a piano transport is needed or a clearance of the old flat is due. The location also plays a role: a move within the city centre with a difficult parking situation may be calculated differently from a move between two outer districts such as Mengede and Aplerbeck.
We recommend arranging a survey early so that we can take individual factors such as the floor, lift, distance to the parking spot and the amount of household goods precisely into account. This way you avoid unpleasant surprises and receive a binding quote that fits your budget. For students and senior citizens we also offer special terms as part of our student move and senior move, tailored to smaller volumes and particular needs.
Parking and parking restrictions in Dortmund's residential areas
Anyone moving in Dortmund knows the problem: in many residential areas such as the Kreuzviertel, the Nordstadt or around Borsigplatz, parking is scarce and the streets are narrow. So that the removal van can stand right outside the door, a parking restriction zone is needed. The responsible authority is the road traffic authority in the Tiefbauamt (civil engineering office); according to the city, only a moving company, service provider or traffic safety contractor can submit the application.
Our price list states €30 to €100 per day for a parking restriction zone, depending on location and duration. In busy areas such as the city centre or near the Westfalenpark, the effort for signage is often higher than in quieter districts such as Brackel or Lütgendortmund.
The following points are important when applying:
- Allow 20 working days' notice with the City of Dortmund
- Exact street and house number for the signage
- Taking special uses into account, e.g. at market squares or pedestrian zones
- Coordination with neighbours where streets are very narrow
Especially in period neighbourhoods such as the Kaiserviertel, early planning is crucial, as only a few parking spaces are often available. Ask when requesting the quote who will submit the application, and state the date and the required zone length. Our parking restriction zone page explains the process. This keeps the distance from the vehicle to the front door short – which saves a lot of time on moving day, especially with bulky items such as a piano or large wardrobes.
From Dortmund to Berlin, Bochum or Hamm
Dortmund is conveniently located on several motorways, including the A1, A2, A40, A44 and A45, and is therefore also a good starting point for a long-distance move. From Dortmund to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 493 road kilometres, mostly via the A2 towards Hanover and on to the Berlin ring road.
For long-distance moves, our price list states from €4.25 per kilometre; the fixed price after a survey is binding. For smaller volumes there is the part load, where your household goods are transported together with other consignments.
As Dortmund lies on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area, moves to neighbouring cities are also in demand. These places have their own location page:
Whether you are moving within North Rhine-Westphalia or to Berlin – we plan the route, intermediate stops and loading order so that your belongings arrive safely and within the agreed time window.
Services for your move in Dortmund
For your move in Dortmund, we as a Berlin moving company offer a comprehensive range of services tailored to the needs of individuals, families and businesses. Our aim is to make every move – whether within the Kreuzviertel or from Hörde to Aplerbeck – as efficient and stress-free as possible.
Our core services include:
- Private move – from a one-room flat to a detached house
- Office move – for offices, practices and commercial businesses
- Part load – affordable transport for smaller volumes
- Clearance – proper clearing of flats and cellars
- Parking restriction zone – coordinating the application and signage with a traffic-sign company
- Piano transport – safe transport of upright and grand pianos
- Senior move – considerate support when changing home in later life
- Student move – quick, affordable and flexible for university life
We set the vehicle size and crew after the survey – for narrow city-centre streets as well as for larger transports to the outer districts. Whether furniture assembly, packing service or final cleaning – we offer all services from one source, so you do not have to deal with several providers. Especially for moves involving special items such as pianos, artworks or aquariums, we plan additional staff and suitable securing. This makes every move in Dortmund – regardless of size and complexity – predictable and safe.
Office and company moves between the Dortmunder U and the technology park
Since the end of coal and steel, Dortmund has developed from a classic industrial location into a modern centre for services and technology. Numerous IT companies, start-ups and research institutions have settled around TU Dortmund and the technology park – here, office and company moves often involve sensitive IT equipment.
Companies also move in the Dortmunder U, the well-known creative quarter in the city centre, as well as in offices at PHOENIX See or in the harbour quarter around Speicherstraße. A company move requires particularly careful planning so that business is interrupted as little as possible.
Our approach to company moves in Dortmund typically includes:
- Drawing up a detailed moving plan with time slots outside core working hours
- Proper dismantling and assembly of office furniture and server cabinets
- Safe transport of IT equipment and sensitive documents
- Coordination with property managers of commercial properties in the technology park
- Organising parking restriction zones in the densely built city centre
Especially for moves between several floors in office towers in central Dortmund or for moves to business parks on the edge of the city, a clear schedule ensures that workstations are quickly ready for use again. We work closely with the company's responsible contacts to minimise downtime. On request we also store files and furniture and deliver them to the new site later. This makes the company move in Dortmund predictable, transparent and efficient for you – regardless of whether it is a small office or an entire company site.
Student moves to TU and FH Dortmund and booking
With TU Dortmund, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Dortmund) and other higher-education institutions, the city is an important university location in North Rhine-Westphalia. Demand for an uncomplicated and affordable student move in Dortmund is correspondingly high, especially at the start and end of semester, when many students move between halls of residence, shared flats in the Kreuzviertel or flats in the Nordstadt.
Our student move is tailored specifically to smaller volumes, cramped student rooms and tight budgets. We offer flexible dates, including at short notice, and transparent fixed prices from €375 for a one-room flat. Especially in neighbourhoods with many period buildings without a lift, such as the Kreuzviertel, we plan enough staff for carrying over several floors.
This is how booking your move with us works:
- Free enquiry by phone, email or online form
- Individual quote after a short inventory or virtual survey
- Arranging the date – weekends are also possible
- The move is carried out, including transport, dismantling and assembly
- Optional final cleaning for the flat handover
On request we combine the student move with a clearance of old furniture or a short-notice part load if only a few boxes and a bed need to be transported. We also plan the transport for students moving to Dortmund from other cities such as Bochum, Essen or Hagen. Just contact us – we will prepare a non-binding quote for your move in Dortmund.
Parking restrictions when moving in Dortmund: application to the Tiefbauamt via a service provider
In Dortmund, the road traffic authority in the Tiefbauamt is responsible for parking restrictions (Königswall 14, 44137 Dortmund). One particular feature: according to the City of Dortmund, the application can be submitted "exclusively by a moving company, a service provider or a traffic safety contractor". Private individuals cannot submit it themselves, because the signs must be put up by a traffic-sign company.
- Notice: According to the city, the application should be submitted 20 working days before the desired period of validity.
- Signs: They must be in place at least three full days before the date required.
- Fee: at least 30.00 euros for one day and 40.00 euros for several days; the costs of putting up the signs are added.
- Documents: a fully completed application, where applicable with the customer's authorisation; an online application and a PDF form are available on the city's website.
The road traffic authority is only open by appointment, telephone +49 231 50-22319, email [email protected]. When enquiring, clarify who will handle the application, and allow for around four weeks' notice. You will find general information under parking restriction zone.
In practice this means: ask when requesting a quote whether the application is included, and state both addresses, the date and the required zone length. With 20 working days' notice, you should place the order several weeks before the moving date.
Re-registration, residents' parking and citizens' services in Dortmund
According to the City of Dortmund, you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. You need the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord and your identity documents; registration is free of charge. Online, it works via electronic residence registration (eWA) with an eID card and BundID.
According to the city, the citizens' services only offer in-person appointments by prior arrangement. There are ten locations, including:
- City centre: Südwall 2-4, 44137 Dortmund
- Hörde: Hörder Bahnhofstr. 16, 44263 Dortmund
- Hombruch: Harkortstr. 58, 44225 Dortmund
- Eving: August-Wagner-Platz 2-4, 44339 Dortmund
Residents' parking permit: A prerequisite is a main or secondary residence in the residents' parking area. The city states 20.50 euros for 6 months, 30.70 euros for 12 months and 46.00 euros for 18 months. For the Hörde parking area, only the local district administration office issues the permit. Background on costs and districts: Moving to Dortmund and Living in Dortmund. All places in NRW: Locations in NRW.
Mind the order: first registration, then the residents' parking permit, because eligibility depends on your registered main or secondary residence. The application is made online or by appointment at the citizens' services; according to the city, it cannot be made by email. Bring your identity card or passport and the registration certificate Part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I).
