Everything important about moving in North Rhine-Westphalia
From our base at Stromstraße 21 it is around 493 road kilometres to Dortmund and around 574 to Cologne, in each case via the A2. With a lorry, breaks and loading and unloading, you should allow one to two days.
Moving in North Rhine-Westphalia: Germany's most populous state
With around 18 million inhabitants, North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's most populous state and consists of the regions of the Rhineland, Westphalia and Lippe. The variety ranges from the large cities on the Rhine and the densely populated Ruhr area to more rural regions such as the Sauerland and the Münsterland. Praktik Transport und Umzüge is based at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit and from there handles moves to all regions of North Rhine-Westphalia – as a private move, office move or affordable part load.
The distances from our base are considerable: it is around 574 road kilometres to Cologne, around 493 to Dortmund and around 558 to Düsseldorf, mostly via the A2 in each case. These distances require precise planning of driving time, breaks and arrival window.
North Rhine-Westphalia combines big-city life with rural residential areas. The Ruhr area, with cities such as Essen, Dortmund and Duisburg, is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe, while the Bergisches Land and the Sauerland offer quieter places to live. A move into a high-rise estate in Gelsenkirchen is therefore very different from a move into a detached house in the Bergisches Land.
We clarify access, floor and parking restrictions for every address in advance and plan each move to North Rhine-Westphalia individually.
Cities and regions for your move in North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia is divided into several distinctive regions that are relevant when planning a move. The Ruhr area, Germany's largest continuous metropolitan area, comprises numerous cities that merge seamlessly into one another. The Lower Rhine (Niederrhein), with its cities near the Dutch border, and the Bergisches Land east of Cologne complete the picture.
These cities have their own location page:
- Essen – home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein Colliery
- Dortmund – the largest city in Westphalia with a strong job market
- Duisburg – home of the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports, regarded as the largest inland port in the world
- Bochum – centrally located on the A40 and A43
- Gelsenkirchen – shaped by its mining tradition
- Oberhausen – known for the CentrO shopping centre
- Hagen – gateway to the Sauerland
- Hamm – the easternmost centre of the Ruhr area
- Krefeld – the velvet and silk city on the Lower Rhine
- Wuppertal – known for its suspension railway (Schwebebahn) in the Bergisches Land
In addition, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Münster, Bielefeld, Mönchengladbach and Aachen are among the large cities of North Rhine-Westphalia for which we also plan moves. The state's central location with a dense motorway network of the A1, A2, A3, A4, A40, A42, A43, A44, A45, A46, A52, A57, A59 and A61 makes it easier to reach any destination within North Rhine-Westphalia.
Period buildings, high-rises, Bergisches Land: particularities in NRW
A move in North Rhine-Westphalia comes with some regional particularities that we take into account in every plan. In the Ruhr area, numerous blocks of flats from the mining era shape the townscape – narrow stairwells and small lifts are not unusual here, which is why we plan enough staff and carrying straps.
In the old towns of Münster, Aachen or Soest, many buildings are listed. Narrow streets and limited loading zones make a parking restriction zone applied for early essential there, so that loading and unloading run smoothly on moving day.
The dense population along the Rhine corridor between Cologne, Leverkusen and Düsseldorf regularly leads to heavy traffic on the A1 and A3, especially at rush hour. We therefore plan our trips to avoid congestion on these main routes wherever possible.
The Bergisches Land around Wuppertal and Remscheid, with its hilly and sometimes very steep streets, also places special demands on vehicle and driver. Tight bends and steep driveways require suitable vehicle sizes and enough time.
In more rural areas such as the Münsterland or the Sauerland, the distances between places are often longer, but parking is more relaxed. For students, who often move to the university cities of Münster, Bochum, Dortmund or Cologne, we also offer a specially tailored student move designed for smaller amounts of furniture and tight budgets.
We clarify these regional differences during the survey so that your move in North Rhine-Westphalia runs smoothly.
What a move in North Rhine-Westphalia costs
The cost of a move to or within North Rhine-Westphalia depends on several factors: distance, size of the flat, floor, accessibility and additional services such as a packing service or furniture assembly. At Praktik Transport und Umzüge you always receive a transparent fixed-price quote without hidden costs.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| 1-room flat (local move) | from €375 |
| 2-room flat (local move) | from €584 |
| 3-room flat (local move) | from €889 |
| Long-distance move Berlin – North Rhine-Westphalia | from €4.25/km |
| Parking restriction zone per day | €30–100 |
For a long-distance move from Berlin to North Rhine-Westphalia, for example to Cologne (around 574 km) or Dortmund (around 493 km from Stromstraße), the distance covered plays a central role in pricing. The per-kilometre rate from €4.25 covers fuel, tolls and the moving team's working time. Additional factors such as a piano transport or an extensive clearance of the old flat also affect the final price.
If you want to save costs, you can opt for a part load: your goods are transported together with other consignments on the same route, which is an affordable alternative especially for smaller volumes. For senior citizens who need a gentle, well-organised move, we recommend our dedicated senior move, which can also include clearance and furniture assembly.
We are happy to prepare an individual, non-binding quote tailored exactly to your needs in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Long distance or neighbouring city: planning moves in NRW
Whether a long-distance move from Berlin to North Rhine-Westphalia or a local move within a city such as Bochum or Krefeld – each requires different planning. Over a long distance, what counts is driving time, the driver's driving and rest periods and a precise route via the A2 and then the A1, A44 or A45.
We calculate the routes from our base on Stromstraße using real road kilometres: around 530 kilometres to Essen, around 505 to Hagen and around 464 to Hamm. Depending on the traffic on the A2, we build in time buffers so that your belongings arrive on time and undamaged.
A local move within North Rhine-Westphalia, for example from Oberhausen to Duisburg or from Wuppertal to Hagen, is usually done in one day. Here other questions come to the fore: narrow inner-city streets, limited parking and sometimes historic buildings with narrow stairwells.
We offer suitable services for both types of move:
- Private move for individuals and families
- Office move for offices and commercial businesses
- Part load as an affordable alternative for smaller volumes
- Piano transport for delicate instruments
Whether you are moving from Berlin to the Ruhr area, the Bergisches Land or the Lower Rhine – we ensure a smooth process, however long the route.

As a business location, the state offers numerous jobs in industry, logistics and services – particularly in the Ruhr area and along the Rhine corridor between Cologne and Düsseldorf.
For families, cities such as Münster or Aachen are attractive with their wide range of leisure and educational opportunities, while young professionals and students often move to vibrant centres such as Dortmund, Bochum or Cologne. Parking restrictions in North Rhine-Westphalia: examples from Cologne and Essen
In North Rhine-Westphalia, each city decides for itself how it regulates moving-day parking restrictions. Two examples show the differences.
Cologne: According to the City of Cologne, the no-parking zone is set up by exemption permit under § 46 StVO. The application should, if possible, be submitted at least three weeks before the date, and the zone must be in place 96 hours before the date. The fee is 36 euros for the first day and 18 euros for each additional day; an external furniture lift costs an additional 14 euros. You obtain the two signs privately from a traffic-sign company. An exemption permit is generally only issued for one vehicle; according to Cologne, a lorry with a permissible total weight of 7.5 t needs about 15 metres.
Essen: Here the roadworks management department (Baustellenmanagement) is responsible. According to the City of Essen, apply at least 15 days before the move, plus a set-up period of four days. The signs with an additional plate must be in place at least 96 hours beforehand and are supplied by traffic safety companies. Fees are charged "depending on type and scope"; the city's page does not state an amount.
So plan for different deadlines in each city. Through our parking restriction zone service we coordinate the process, and our guide explains the basics. City pages: Cologne, Essen and Düsseldorf.
Moving to North Rhine-Westphalia: registration, Sundays and public holidays, long-distance move
If you are moving from Berlin to North Rhine-Westphalia, you book a long-distance move and need to bear several things in mind at your destination.
- Sundays and public holidays: The City of Cologne points out that furniture removals on Sundays and public holidays are generally prohibited under the NRW Public Holidays Act. So schedule the date on a working day.
- Registration: According to the city, in Cologne you must register within 14 days of moving in. Registration is free of charge and can be done online via the "Gemeinsam-Online" service portal. In person, you need an appointment at the customer centre on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but not on Mondays and Wednesdays.
- Documents: At least your identity card, and where applicable your passport and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung). According to Cologne, the tenancy agreement is not sufficient for this.
The regions differ in building types and access, from the Rhineland and the Ruhr area to the Bergisches Land and the Sauerland. We therefore clarify carrying distance, floor and parking situation for each address during the survey. Allow time for permits: Cologne recommends at least three weeks, Essen requires 15 days' notice. For cities in the far west, see our page on Aachen and the guide for Aachen. You will also find pages from us on Lower Saxony and Hesse. For a long-distance move, we coordinate loading and arrival so that the permit is in place at the destination in time.
