Moving to Krefeld: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to the Lower Rhine
Moving to Krefeld: from the four Wälle to Uerdingen
Guide
Krefeld is the “City of Velvet and Silk” on the left bank of the Lower Rhine: thanks to the silk industry of the 18th and 19th centuries, it became one of the richest cities in Prussia, and today around 231,000 people live here. The city centre is enclosed by the four Wälle (ramparts boulevards), including the Ostwall, and there are also the historic village centres of Uerdingen, Hüls and Linn with Linn Castle. For your private move we clarify in advance whether it is a period building on the Wälle, a house in Bockum or a flat in Fischeln – the number of carriers and the parking restriction depend on this.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 577 km via the A2, the A42 and the A57 to Krefeld; including a break that is about 8.5 hours. Depending on the volume, we load the day before or drive with two drivers in one day. We plan the parking restriction in front of the new address with three weeks' lead time, because the city states 15 days' processing and the signs must be in place four days beforehand. We quote the fixed price after a survey – including for the return route from Krefeld to Berlin. More on the route under Moving Berlin – Krefeld.

Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Krefeld
Planning in Berlin, arrival on the Lower Rhine
We do not have a branch in Krefeld but come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit – from the city centre on the Wälle via Uerdingen to Hüls, we drive directly to every address. That is why we clarify access, floor and stairwell in advance and plan the parking restriction according to the city's deadlines. We pack, carry, transport and assemble; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Part load: move affordably
If you only want to bring a few pieces of furniture or boxes to Krefeld, it is best to ask about a part load: your belongings travel with other consignments on the route via the A2, the A42 and the A57 to the Lower Rhine, and you only pay your share of the load space. The delivery day depends on the trip; for fixed dates there is a trip of your own.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Krefeld
Krefeld's boroughs and districts at a glance
Since 1 November 2025, Krefeld has been divided into five boroughs – Mitte, Nord, West, Süd and Ost – with a total of 19 districts; previously there were nine boroughs. The city centre lies within the four Wälle; to the north and west follow districts such as Bockum, Traar, Hüls and Forstwald, and to the south Fischeln and Oppum. On the Rhine lie Uerdingen with its historic centre and Linn with its castle and Rhine port. Whether a period building with a tall stairwell in the city centre or a detached house on the outskirts: for the move we clarify access and floor in advance so that there are enough carriers and materials. For families, the route to school and tram connections matter; for commuters, proximity to the A57. How we plan your private move is described on the service page.
Living, working and studying in Krefeld
We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition; the city's rent index (Mietspiegel) provides current comparative figures. If you start looking early and are flexible about location, you will find a flat more easily. Krefeld's economy is shaped by the chemical industry, mechanical and plant engineering and the metal industry; thanks to its location between the Rhine and the motorways, the city is also a logistics hub. Since 1971, Krefeld has been home to the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. Worth seeing are the Krefeld art museums, the German Textile Museum, the zoo and Linn Castle. Notice in Berlin, the parking restriction and registration are best planned backwards from moving-in day; the city's deadlines are listed further down. If the new flat is not yet available, we store your furniture in Berlin in the meantime and deliver on the agreed date.
How our moving prices work
Whether a 1-room flat from €354 or a 4-room flat from €1,324 – our prices are based on the actual effort involved. 2-room flats from €589 and 3-room flats from €884 are also fairly calculated. For houses and villas there is an individual quote, and we charge long-distance moves from €4.20/km. Arrange your free survey today.
What you should know about moving costs
The price depends primarily on the volume and the distance (from €4.20/km). But the floor and lift and any necessary parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also have an effect. If you need additional furniture assembly or a part load, you should say so in advance.

Parking restriction for your move in Krefeld: application, fees and deadlines
So that the removal van in Krefeld can stand directly outside the front door, you need mobile parking restriction signs. According to the City of Krefeld's service portal, these are among the permits for home moves. The responsible office is the Security and Public Order department (traffic regulation, Elbestraße 7). The application can be submitted online. According to the city, exemptions are not possible for Sundays and public holidays, so choose a working day.
The city states this range of fees:
- one day: €25
- two days: €35
- one week: €50
- one month: €80
- for home moves, each additional location: €15
According to the city, processing takes 15 days after receipt of the complete documents. The signs must be in place four days before the day of use. The applicant is responsible for the signage, and you obtain the signs from hire companies. So allow at least three weeks' lead time from the application to moving day. According to the city, the same permit office also handles exemptions for delivering materials and for driving in the pedestrian zones. Ask about this if your address is in such an area.
Read more about how a parking restriction zone makes moving day easier on our page on the parking restriction zone. The conditions at the moving address, for example in Bockum, Traar or Forstwald, are best clarified during the survey.
Registration, citizens' offices and waste in Krefeld after your move
After moving in, you register with the city. The City of Krefeld's service portal states a deadline of 14 days under the Federal Registration Act. It is not possible to register before you actually move in. You can use electronic address registration (you need the eID function of your ID card with a PIN, a BundID account and the AusweisApp) or book an appointment at a citizens' office (Bürgerbüro). According to the city, the online process must be completed within ten minutes. You must bring the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) and your identity card; you need the vehicle registration certificate if the vehicle is already registered in Krefeld.
According to the city, there are nine citizens' offices, including Bockum (Uerdinger Straße 585), Traar (Kemmerhofstraße 321, open on Mondays and Wednesdays according to the city) and Mitte (Von-der-Leyen-Platz 1). The city releases new appointments every two weeks on Fridays at 12 noon, plus short-notice appointments every morning.
Other things to do after the move:
- Bins: registering, deregistering and re-registering residual waste, organic and blue bins is handled by the Kommunalbetrieb Krefeld (KBK).
- Bulky waste: in the KBK waste A–Z, items such as bed frames or benches are assigned to the GSAK bulky waste collection.
- Electricity and gas: according to the service portal, SWK offers a moving service.
