New on the Lower Rhine: How to Settle In to Krefeld
The first few weeks
Krefeld lies on the left bank of the Rhine in the Lower Rhine region and, because of its history as a centre of silk weaving, is known as the “City of Velvet and Silk”. Since November 2025 the city has been divided into five boroughs with 19 districts, from Hüls in the north to Fischeln in the south and Uerdingen on the Rhine. This guide sorts out the first weeks: registration at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro), choosing a district, public transport, the municipal utility and your car. We handle the transport as a home removal with packing and furniture assembly so that you can concentrate on settling in.
We are not a Krefeld company: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Krefeld and back. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), with additional insurance on request. Route and driving time are on the page Moving Berlin – Krefeld. Whether a parking restriction is needed in front of the new address is something we clarify with you during the survey, along with floor, carrying distance and the delivery day.

What We Clarify Before Moving Day in Krefeld
Parking restriction, access, date
We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Krefeld. Before moving day we clarify with you whether a parking restriction zone is needed in front of the new address and how much lead time the city requires, how narrow the stairwell and access are – for example in Linn's old town – and when the flat will be handed over. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. Registering at the citizens' office remains your appointment; we schedule the move-in so that the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) is ready in time.

Krefeld
for newcomers
New in Krefeld, many questions come up at once: which citizens' office is open on my preferred day? Can I register electronically, and what applies if I hold a foreign nationality? Which district suits my commute – towards Düsseldorf, the Chempark in Uerdingen or the city centre? What else do I have to register after moving in, from the dog to the car? We have summarised the City of Krefeld's information below, supplemented by notes on trams and buses. For the move itself we advise you on schedule, parking restriction and packing so that everything fits on moving-in day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Krefeld
19 Districts in Five Boroughs: Where to Live?
Since November 2025 Krefeld has been divided into the five boroughs of Mitte, Nord, West, Süd and Ost with a total of 19 districts. The city centre is framed by the four ramparts (Wälle), with the Ostwall laid out as a grand boulevard; here you find the main station, shops and the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. To the north and north-east lie Hüls, Traar with Lake Elfrath as a recreation area, Verberg and Bockum, and further east the Gartenstadt.
On the Rhine lie Uerdingen with the Chempark and Linn with medieval Linn Castle, and in the south Fischeln and Dießem/Lehmheide. We deliberately do not quote reliable rent figures – compare offers in the same district and check the route and connections before you sign. Especially for commuters to Düsseldorf, it is worth looking at the U70 and U76 stops.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Krefeld
After the decline of the silk industry, Krefeld's economy today is shaped above all by chemicals, mechanical and plant engineering and the metal industry. The Chempark Krefeld-Uerdingen grew out of the former Bayer works; stainless steel producers such as Outokumpu and Deutsche Edelstahlwerke also operate within the city. The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences has its design faculty in Krefeld, among others.
For leisure there is Krefeld Zoo next to the Grotenburg stadium, Lake Elfrath, Linn Castle and the art museums. Public transport is run by SWK Mobil with four tram lines and buses; Düsseldorf Airport is around 20 km from the centre and can be reached via the A57 and A44. We schedule the moving date to match the flat handover.
Moving prices by flat size
The answer depends on the size: 1-room flat from €354, 2-room flat from €589, 3-room flat from €909, 4-room flat from €1,329. Houses and villas always receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves a rate per kilometre from €4.25/km applies. It is best to clarify all details during a free survey.
What determines the moving price
In principle, the price depends on the volume of your belongings and the distance between the old and new address (from €4.25/km). Floor and lift also play a role, as does a parking restriction zone if one is needed. If you book furniture assembly or a shared load, you should factor this in as well.

Registering in Krefeld: Deadline, Documents and Electronic Registration
According to the City of Krefeld's service portal, anyone moving to Krefeld must register within 14 days of moving in under the Federal Registration Act. Registering before you actually move in is not possible, and deregistering at your old place of residence is not required. Breaches of the registration obligation are treated as an administrative offence.
- In person at the citizens' office: you book an appointment online and bring the completed landlord confirmation and your ID card. The registration form is completed and signed, after which you receive the registration certificate in writing.
- Electronically (eWA): you need the eID function of your ID card with PIN, a BundID account, the AusweisApp and the landlord confirmation if you do not own the flat. According to the city, once you start the process you must complete it within ten minutes.
- Secondary residence: this cannot yet be registered via the online service, only in person or by proxy.
If you hold the nationality of a non-EU country or another EU country, according to the city you must report within the deadline to the Migration and Integration department (Am Hauptbahnhof 5, 47798 Krefeld); an additional visit to the citizens' office is then not required. After registering, the chip in your ID card must also be updated; only then does the Bundesdruckerei send the new address stickers.
According to the city, if you keep dogs that are subject to dog tax in Krefeld, you must also register them for dog tax. A checklist of further offices is in Change of address: who to inform?.
Bockum, Traar and Uerdingen: Citizens' Offices and Everyday Life in the Districts

So check the weekday before you choose an appointment in your area. For everyday life after registration, the city provides further information. According to the moving service page, SWK Energie GmbH offers electricity and gas tariffs as well as subscriptions and tickets for new customers; the contact is SWK customer service (St. Töniser Straße 124, 47804 Krefeld).
According to the city, vehicle owners may need to have their car re-registered after moving from another city. You can read more about the residential environment in our guide Moving to Krefeld.
