Moving to Gelsenkirchen: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Gelsenkirchen
Moving to Gelsenkirchen: between the Emscher, the canal and Buer
Guide
Gelsenkirchen lies in the heart of the Ruhr area on the Emscher and the Rhine–Herne Canal; around 260,000 people live here. South of the canal, former colliery sites and dense housing shape the townscape, for example in Ückendorf, Schalke or Bismarck, while to the north lie Buer, Erle and Horst with more greenery. For your private move we check the floor, staircase and space for the lorry in advance and then give you a fixed price.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 519 km via the A2 and the A42 to Gelsenkirchen; with the statutory break that takes about seven and a half hours. We take care of packing, transport and assembly – whether it is a flat in Schalke or a terraced house in Buer. The route is described in detail on the page Berlin – Gelsenkirchen move; we plan the return journey from the Ruhr area to Berlin in the same way. The route runs almost entirely on the motorway, and we build in a buffer for traffic jams around Dortmund and Bochum.

What we handle on your move to Gelsenkirchen
Planned in Berlin, arriving in the Ruhr
We have no branch in Gelsenkirchen; instead we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is an old building in the Altstadt, a former miners' estate in Ückendorf or a house in Erle. We plan the parking restriction according to the city's rules and give you the fixed price after the survey. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available for valuables. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Not much to move? Part load!
For smaller moves or single items to Gelsenkirchen, a part load (Beiladung) can be cheaper: your belongings travel together with other consignments towards the Ruhr area. You need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few pieces of furniture are following.

From
planning to the BÜRGERcenter
A move to Gelsenkirchen involves a few points that need planning. In densely built districts such as Schalke or Bismarck, a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) for moving day makes sense because parking space is scarce. After moving in, you register within two weeks at one of the BÜRGERcenter offices, for example in Buer Town Hall or the Hans-Sachs-Haus. Gelsenkirchen lies on the A2, A42 and A52 motorways – if possible, schedule the removal van's arrival outside rush hour.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Gelsenkirchen
Five boroughs: Gelsenkirchen at a glance
Gelsenkirchen has five boroughs: Mitte (including Altstadt, Bismarck, Feldmark, Schalke), Nord (Buer, Hassel, Scholven), Ost (Erle, Resse), Süd (Neustadt, Rotthausen, Ückendorf) and West (Beckhausen, Horst). Buer is home to Schloss Berge, Horst to the Renaissance Schloss Horst; Erle has the Veltins-Arena of FC Schalke 04.
South of the Rhine–Herne Canal, the mining history is most visible: in Bismarck the Consol Theater performs in the former engine house of the Consolidation colliery, and in Ückendorf the science park was built on the site of the Rheinelbe colliery. Housing there is often dense, with old buildings and narrow staircases – important when planning your move.
Work, university and leisure in Gelsenkirchen
We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on the district and the condition of the property. Major employers include the Gelsenkirchen refinery (Ruhr Oel) with two sites, the Scholven power station and hospitals such as those of St. Augustinus GmbH. The Westfälische Hochschule, founded in 1992 as Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen, brings students to the city every semester.
Former colliery sites have become parks and research locations: the Nordsternpark on the Rhine–Herne Canal was created for the 1997 Federal Garden Show, and the Wissenschaftspark Rheinelbe in Ückendorf carries out research into solar technology, among other things. Add to that ZOOM Erlebniswelt and FC Schalke 04's home matches at the Veltins-Arena. On match days, traffic around Erle and the Berger Feld is heavy – one reason not to schedule your move on a home match day.

What will my move really cost?
Several factors count towards a realistic cost estimate: the volume of your household goods, the distance to be covered (from €3.80/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also needed to make the transport run smoothly. Furniture assembly and a part load also affect the final price.

Bulky waste and residents' parking permit in Gelsenkirchen: what to sort out before moving in
Before the move, old furniture in Gelsenkirchen can be collected by GELSENDIENSTE. According to gelsenkirchen.de, collection is free of charge if the items are not from a commercial source. Owners, property managers and occupants book appointments online at gelsendienste.buergerportal.digital, by phone on 0209/954-4777 or by email to [email protected]. Bulky waste and large electrical appliances (for example fridges and washing machines) are collected separately and each need their own appointment.
According to the city, items may be put out no earlier than 12:00 noon on the day before and must be out by 6:00 am on collection day at the latest, as close to the kerb as possible. Collections from private property such as front gardens and courtyards are not possible. Until collection, the owner remains responsible for the condition of the items, so do not place anything bulky where it obstructs pedestrians or traffic.
If you are bringing a car, you can apply for a residents' parking permit. According to gelsenkirchen.de:
- Valid for either 1 or 2 years
- Fee: €30.00 for one year (€10.20 with an electric vehicle number plate), €60.00 for two years
- Requirements include: you live in the residents' parking zone and have neither a garage nor a private parking space within 200 m
We can help you declutter with our house clearance service; the location page can be found under Removal company Gelsenkirchen.
Registering at the BÜRGERcenter and parking in Buer and Horst
Gelsenkirchen has four BÜRGERcenter offices where you register after moving in. According to gelsenkirchen.de, you must do so within two weeks. Choose the one that suits your new district:
- Rathaus Buer, Goldbergstraße 12
- Vorburg Schloss Horst, Turfstraße 21
- Cranger Straße 262
- Hans-Sachs-Haus, Ebertstraße 11
Appointments are required, by phone on +49 (209) 169-2100 or online. Bring the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), signed by the landlord and naming every person to be registered, as well as an identity card, passport or national passport for everyone. According to the city, registration within Germany is also possible online at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. There are no fees.
If you are moving to Buer, the city helps with finding a parking space: according to gelsenkirchen.de, more than 300 optical sensors above around 2,000 parking spaces in the town centre show free spaces in real time in the City-App Gelsenkirchen. This is a pilot project by the city. For questions about traffic in Buer, the city refers to Referat 69 – Verkehr in Buer Town Hall, which can be reached Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and on Fridays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Ideally, book your BÜRGERcenter appointment before moving day, because according to the city appointments are required. Further information on settling in can be found under Living in Gelsenkirchen.
