Moving to Hamm: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Hamm
Moving to Hamm: the Lippe, the Glass Elephant and seven boroughs
Tips & costs
A move to Hamm takes you to the north-eastern edge of the Ruhr area: the independent city lies on both sides of the Lippe, has around 180,000 inhabitants and has always been a railway hub. Alongside St Paul's Church, its landmark is the Glass Elephant in the Maximilianpark, on the site of the former Maximilian colliery. The city is divided into seven boroughs – from Bockum-Hövel and Heessen in the north to Rhynern and Uentrop in the south and east. For your private move we clarify access, floor and parking space in advance.
From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 464 km to Hamm, driven via the A2. For the lorry we allow about 7 hours including a break and usually plan the move over two days. In Hamm you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We also handle the reverse route from Hamm to Berlin. Your move to Hamm: what we do
From Moabit to Hamm
We are a Berlin moving company from Moabit and handle moves to Hamm without having a branch there. That is why we clarify access, floor and carrying distances before moving day – for a period building in Hamm-Mitte just as for a terraced house in Rhynern. In Hamm, the road traffic authority is responsible for parking restrictions; the city specifies an informal written application for this. You receive a fixed price after a survey; liability is under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. More about the private move.

Part load – the clever solution
With a part load to Hamm, you use free loading space on a journey towards Westphalia and the Ruhr area. This is worthwhile for a room in a shared flat, single pieces of furniture or boxes that follow later. The delivery date is then a time window – in return, the price goes down.

Moving
& transport from one provider
A move to Hamm raises many questions: which borough suits you, where do you register, who approves the parking restriction and how long does the lorry take from Berlin? This guide presents the seven boroughs, from Mitte via Heessen and Bockum-Hövel to Herringen, Pelkum, Rhynern and Uentrop. On top of that come citizens' offices, residents' parking, bulky waste and the drive via the A2. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Hamm
The seven boroughs of Hamm
Hamm is divided into seven boroughs: Mitte, Uentrop, Rhynern, Pelkum, Herringen, Bockum-Hövel and Heessen. The Lippe flows from east to west through the city; Bockum-Hövel and Heessen lie north of it and, in terms of landscape, already belong to the Münsterland, while Rhynern and Uentrop in the south extend into the Hellweg Börde plains.
Mitte, with the city centre, station and St Paul's Church, is the most densely built up; period buildings without lifts and limited parking space are common here. In the outer boroughs, estate and detached houses predominate. For the move, the specific address is therefore what counts: we clarify floor, stairwell and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private move service adapts to it.
Railway hub, university and Maximilianpark
Hamm is an important junction of several railway lines; the former marshalling yard, covering 110 hectares, was once one of the largest in Europe. With the Higher Regional Court of Hamm (Oberlandesgericht), the largest higher regional court in Germany is based here, and the state-run Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences offers technically oriented degree programmes at its site on Marker Allee. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
To unwind, the Maximilianpark with the Glass Elephant beckons; it was created for the 1984 State Garden Show on the site of the Maximilian colliery. If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a new job, fix the moving day early so that the parking restriction and registration fit into the first two weeks. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Parking restriction, parking and residents' zones in Hamm
For the removal van in front of your door, the road traffic authority is the right point of contact in Hamm. It is part of the traffic engineering/management section (Gustav-Heinemann-Straße 10, 59065 Hamm, telephone 02381 17-8634). For exemptions from no-stopping and no-parking rules under § 46 StVO, the city's website specifies an informal written application where no form is available. It is best to ask the authority in advance which details and deadlines apply to your move, or call the service line on 02381 17-7777 (Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 6 pm).
Parking in the residential area is also important for planning:
- Residents' parking: according to the city of Hamm, residents' parking applies in all city-centre residential areas; there are 11 residents' parking zones in total (A/B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, S, W and W1).
- Residents' parking permit: it costs 31 euros for one year and 62 euros for two years, and can be applied for online or at the citizens' office.
- City centre: at the parking ticket machines, the first half hour is free of charge.
Please note: the permit does not entitle you to a particular parking space. That is exactly why, on narrow streets, it pays to arrange a parking restriction for loading and unloading in good time. How we organise this is explained under Parking restriction zone.
Registration, boroughs and bulky waste in Hamm
The city of Hamm is divided into seven boroughs: Mitte, Uentrop, Rhynern, Pelkum, Herringen, Bockum-Hövel and Heessen. Each borough has a citizens' office (Bürgeramt) where you can register your new address. According to the city, if you change flats within Hamm you must register the change within two weeks. Registration is free of charge. You need your identity card or passport and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) signed by your landlord. You will find the Mitte citizens' office at Theodor-Heuss-Platz 16 (telephone 02381 17-9145). If you have a car registered, you can have the new address updated at the same time; for this, bring your landlord's confirmation of moving in.
Alternatively, you can do it online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de; according to the city, online applications are processed within three working days. Check in advance with your citizens' office or via the service line on 02381 17-7777 whether an appointment is needed.
Bulky waste often accumulates before a move. Hamm's waste management and street cleaning service (ASH) offers collection via an online form ("Sperrmüllbestellung"); alternatively, you can drop it off yourself at the recycling centre. The recycling centre at Am Lausbach 4 in Bockum-Hövel is in operation. Questions are answered by the ASH service line on 02381 17-8282. The city's website does not state any costs, so ask in advance.
