Moving to Münster: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Münster
Moving to Münster – a university city with six city districts
Guide
A move to Münster takes you to the city at the heart of the Münsterland: since 2014 more than 300,000 people have lived here, around 65,000 of them students. Münster is known as a cycling city and as a centre of administration and higher education. Twelve residents' parking zones apply in the city-centre area – so a space for the removal van needs planning. We plan your private move or business move at a fixed price after a survey.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 474 km via the A2, the A30 and the A1; by lorry that is about seven hours including breaks, and with loading and unloading usually two days. Whether it is a period flat in the Kreuzviertel, a flat in the Aaseestadt or a house in Hiltrup: we clarify the floor and parking space in advance. The route is described under Move Berlin – Münster.

Your quote for Münster – after a survey
See first, then calculate
How much your move to Münster costs depends on volume, floor, access and the route of around 474 km. We look at your household goods – at your home in Berlin or by video – and then give you a written fixed price, whether the destination is in the Kreuzviertel or in Hiltrup.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Our part in your move to Münster
From Moabit to Münster
We have no branch in Münster; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the Kreuzviertel or a house in Hiltrup. In Münster, a parking restriction is ordered by the road traffic authority; in the twelve residents' parking zones of the city centre it is otherwise almost impossible to get a space for a whole moving day – we plan the application with you. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

How we support you
After the survey you receive a fixed price for Münster in which the journey (around 474 km), packing, the parking restriction and assembly are listed individually – so you can see what you are paying for.
Date confirmed
Access sorted
Parking space secured
Deadlines in view
Storage to bridge a gap
Assembled on arrival day
Part load for small amounts
A part load (Beiladung) is worthwhile if only a little needs to go to Münster: your items use free load space on a tour heading that way. You pay less than for a lorry of your own but need to be flexible about the delivery day. Well packed, even single items travel safely.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Münster raises its own questions: is the new flat in one of the twelve residents' parking zones, how does the removal van get into narrow city-centre streets, and how does registration work – online or at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro)? This guide introduces the six city districts and quarters such as the Kreuzviertel, Kuhviertel or Aaseestadt and explains costs, the parking restriction and the route from Berlin.

Common questions about moving to Münster
Six city districts and the quarters of the city centre
Münster is divided into six city districts: Mitte, Nord, Ost, West, Süd-Ost and Hiltrup. The quarters of the city centre include the Aaseestadt, Erphoviertel, Geistviertel, Hansaviertel, Kreuzviertel, Kuhviertel, Mauritzviertel and Südviertel, among others. The neighbourhoods of the five outer districts largely consist of formerly independent municipalities.
The Aasee with its parks, promenades and the Allwetterzoo is an important local recreation area; to the south lies the Hiltruper See. For the move, the specific address counts: in the city centre, residents' parking zones and narrow streets determine the planning, in the outer districts it is more about access and carrying routes. Our private move service adapts to this.
Universities, administration and cycling: who moves to Münster
With around 65,000 students, Münster is one of Germany's large university cities; the largest institution is the University of Münster. The city is an important centre for services and administration with state courts and authorities, and the seat of the administrative region of the same name. The Dutch city of Enschede is around 65 km away. We do not quote specific rents.
After moving in, you register within two weeks – online via electronic residence registration or with an appointment at the citizens' office. You only receive the residents' parking permit once you are registered in the zone. If you are arriving for the start of the semester, you should fix the moving day early. For routes from Berlin you will find everything under Long-distance moves.

The price of your move – how it is calculated
The calculation is always based on the volume of the goods to be transported and the distance driven (from €3.90/km). Added to this are the floor, whether there is a lift and a possible parking restriction zone. Extras such as furniture assembly or a part load are also factored into the price.

Moving to Münster: parking restriction, parking and the twelve residents' parking zones
According to the city, there are twelve residents' parking zones in Münster's city-centre area. In these zones you may only park in marked bays; otherwise a residents' parking permit is required. For visitors in mixed-principle zones: up to two hours free of charge with a parking disc, while longer visits require a visitor's parking permit. Which zone your street falls into is shown on the map in the City of Münster's online city map (geo.stadt-muenster.de).
For a removal van that needs space for a whole day, this is not a reliable solution. Under § 45 StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations), a parking restriction is ordered by the road traffic authority. We do not quote the lead time and fee here because we could not verify them on the City of Münster's pages; for questions about parking, the city names the Office for Citizen and Council Services (Amt für Bürger- und Ratsservice, Stadthaus 1, Klemensstraße 10, telephone 02 51/4 92-33 33) and the authority number 115. Our service for this can be found under Parking restriction zone.
Two tips for planning:
- According to the city, the Erphoviertel now belongs to residents' parking zone N. If you are moving there, apply for the residents' parking permit early.
- You only receive the permit once you are registered in the residents' parking zone. So register promptly (see below).

Re-registering in Münster: citizens' offices, online registration and landlord confirmation
Under § 17 (1) BMG, you must register no later than two weeks after moving in. In Münster this can be done online via the federal electronic residence registration; the city then sends the address sticker for your ID card or eID card by post. If you would rather come in person, according to the city you can book an appointment online at the citizens' offices or district administrations to avoid waiting times.
The responsible office is the Office for Citizen and Council Services in Stadthaus 1, Klemensstraße 10. The city lists citizens' offices in Mitte, Gievenbeck, Handorf, Hiltrup, Kinderhaus, Roxel and Wolbeck. For registration matters (registration, deregistration and change of address), the city explicitly lists the Bürgerbüro Mitte in Stadthaus 1. You can reach the city by phone on 02 51/4 92-33 33 or via 115.
The person providing the accommodation must confirm your moving in to the registration authority, in writing or electronically (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). The City of Münster offers an online form for this. Ask your landlord for it before moving day. If your main residence later becomes a secondary residence, report this to the registration authority as a change of status.
Plan registration and the residents' parking permit as two separate steps: you only receive the permit once you are registered in the residents' parking zone, and it is issued for your vehicle. This saves unnecessary trips.
