Amersfoort: old town, rail hub and new districts
The first few weeks
With around 164,000 inhabitants (at the beginning of 2026), Amersfoort is the second-largest city in the province of Utrecht and lies on the Eem. The medieval city centre with the Koppelpoort, the Muurhuizen and the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren stands alongside new-build districts such as Vathorst and Schothorst-Noord, both of which have their own station. If you are moving from Germany, in the first few days you take care of the appointment with the municipality, BRP registration and health insurance. Within the EU your household goods need no customs papers.
When it comes to costs, our fixed price after a survey gives you certainty, whether you are moving to Amersfoort from Berlin or another German city. The quote states what is included – from packing and transport to disposing of old furniture. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); details of our services for private customers can be found under private move. We are liable for your household goods under the HGB, and additional insurance is available.

Frequently asked questions about living in Amersfoort
Districts & housing market in Amersfoort
The historic Binnenstad (city centre) with the Koppelpoort, the Muurhuizen and the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren is sought after and densely built. The Soesterkwartier and the Bergkwartier date from before the war. From the 1990s the city grew with new districts: Kattenbroek became known nationwide for its distinctive architecture, followed by Nieuwland and Zielhorst. Since 2001 Vathorst has been developing north of the A1; like Schothorst-Noord, it has its own station.
As in many Dutch cities, the housing market in Amersfoort is tight. We do not give specific rents or purchase prices because we do not have a reliable current source. It pays to start your search early, use several portals and estate agents and stay flexible about the neighbourhood – the old villages of Hoogland and Hooglanderveen also belong to the municipality.
Working, living and leisure in Amersfoort
Amersfoort is an important rail and motorway hub: at Amersfoort Centraal station, lines from the direction of Bad Bentheim and Deventer, Zwolle, Utrecht and Amsterdam meet, and on the road the A1 and A28 cross. This makes the city interesting for commuters to the Randstad; Hilversum is little more than 20 kilometres to the west. We do not name specific employers or journey times without a reliable source – check the connections with NS.
Besides work, Amersfoort impresses with its quality of life: the medieval old town, cafés along the canals, the Mondriaanhuis in Piet Mondrian's birthplace and the nearby Utrechtse Heuvelrug with forests and cycle paths. Many newcomers also appreciate the cycle path network and the short distances. If you value green surroundings with urban infrastructure, you will find an attractive place to live here.
Transparent prices for every move
Whether it is a small flat or a large house – with us you pay a fair and transparent price. Moving a 1-room flat starts from €354, and a 2-room flat costs from €589. For 3 rooms we charge from €899, for 4 rooms from €1,309. A house or villa always receives an individual quote, as many factors play a role here. For long-distance moves a per-kilometre price from €4.25/km applies. Use our free survey to get clarity about your individual costs.
What does the moving price depend on?
How much your move costs depends primarily on the volume of your household goods and the distance to be covered, which is charged at from €4.25/km. The floor and whether a lift can be used also play a role. If you need a parking restriction zone, this is also a factor. Furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked as options.

From Berlin to Amersfoort – and back
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and travel to the Netherlands; Amersfoort is around 614 km away. From the first consultation to the last box, we plan the move with you. The route is described in the guide to moving to Amersfoort; further destinations are shown under Locations and long-distance moves.
Registering in Amersfoort: appointment at the Stadhuis and documents
According to the Gemeente Amersfoort, anyone moving from Germany to Amersfoort and staying in the Netherlands for more than four months within a six-month period must register in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP, the personal records database). This also applies if you were registered in the Netherlands before. The municipality requires you to book an appointment by phone no later than five days after the move, on 14 033 or, from abroad, on +31 33 469 5111.
Registration takes place in person at the Stadhuis at Stadhuisplein 1; children under 18 must also attend. The municipality lists the following documents:
- a valid ID document
- proof of your lawful residence, for example a residence permit
- foreign birth, marriage or divorce certificates, if applicable
- a copy of your tenancy or purchase agreement, limited to the pages with addresses, names and signatures
- for private rentals, the landlord's declaration of consent with a copy of their ID; for subletting, the completed declaration of the main occupant together with a copy of their ID
If documents are missing, the municipality warns that it cannot yet process the registration. Expats can get support from the Utrecht International Center; employers can also book appointments there for their staff. With BRP registration you automatically receive your citizen service number (BSN). How the move itself works is explained in the Amersfoort moving guide and in the article on the long-distance move to Amersfoort.
Everyday life in Amersfoort: grofvuil, the Milieubrengstation and parking
For bulky waste, the municipality names two options, both via the waste company ROVA. You can have grofvuil collected free of charge, online or via the ROVA customer hotline on 033 422 85 00. Or, as a resident, you can drop it off free of charge at ROVA's Milieubrengstation (recycling centre) at Nijverheidsweg-Noord 35. Since 1 September 2026, according to the municipality, you need a ROVA pass to drive onto the site. The GRIP van in your neighbourhood accepts small amounts of up to two full shopping bags free of charge. The municipality's page does not give the station's opening hours; they are available from ROVA.
On parking, the municipality writes: anyone who lives or works in an area with paid parking needs a parking permit (parkvergunning) in many cases. The page does not mention any special rule for removal vans, so you should ask the municipality (14 033 or via WhatsApp on 06 57 50 53 02) whether there is anything to consider for your street.
Further obligations concern insurance: according to the Dutch government, everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is legally required to have basic health insurance. Allow some time for this after you arrive. If a lot needs to be sorted out before the move, our household clearance can help; further steps are collected in the checklist for emigrating to the Netherlands.
