Moving to Amersfoort: Costs Process & Districts

Amersfoort guide
Moving to Amersfoort: old town on the Eem, new builds in the north
Neighbourhoods, costs, access
A move to Amersfoort can have two very different destinations: the medieval city centre (Binnenstad) with the Koppelpoort, the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren and the Muurhuizen, which stand on the oldest city wall – or the new residential areas in the north such as Vathorst, Nieuwland and Kattenbroek. In period buildings, narrow staircases and access rules count; in new builds, it is more about carrying distances and parking spaces. What we handle with a home removal is set out on the service page.
From Berlin-Moabit it is around 614 km via the A2, A30 and the Dutch A1; about 9 hours by lorry including a break. We come from Berlin and have no branch in the Netherlands. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is possible. The route is described in the overview of long-distance moves; more about the places we serve is shown in the overview of locations.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Amersfoort
Amersfoort's districts at a glance
The Binnenstad is the medieval centre: the Koppelpoort is both a land gate and a water gate, the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, at 98 metres, is one of the tallest church towers in the Netherlands, and the Muurhuizen follow the oldest city wall. The Bergkwartier and the Soesterkwartier were built before the war.
Newer residential areas are Kattenbroek, known nationwide for its distinctive architecture, Zielhorst, Schothorst-Noord and Nieuwland. Vathorst has been under construction since 2001 and in 2022, with just over 27,000 inhabitants, was the largest district. Hoogland and Hooglanderveen used to be separate villages and are now part of the built-up city.
Living and commuting in Amersfoort
Amersfoort lies in the Eem valley in the province of Utrecht and has around 164,000 inhabitants. The city is a railway hub; Amersfoort Centraal station connects it with Utrecht, Amsterdam and Zwolle, among others, and on the road the A1 and A28 intersect here. Many residents therefore commute to the surrounding cities.
The housing market in Amersfoort is in demand. We do not give specific rents or purchase prices here because they change quickly; current listings are shown on Dutch portals. Important for the move: registration at the Stadhuis requires a rental or purchase contract. So only plan the moving date once the home is secured – we will then coordinate the loading day accordingly.

What influences the moving price?
The price of your move depends on several factors: the volume of your belongings, the distance (from €3.90/km), and the floor and lift at your home. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) can also affect the calculation. Extra services such as furniture assembly or a shared load also affect the final amount.

Amersfoort: parking zones and the moving permit (verhuisvergunning)
In Amersfoort, the parking zone of your new address determines whether you pay or need a permit. On amersfoort.nl the municipality names five zones: in zone 1, only permit parking (vergunning) applies around the clock. In zones 2 and 3 the rules apply Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 24:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 24:00, in zone 4 Monday to Saturday from 6:00 to 11:00, and in zone 5 Monday to Friday from 23:00 to 6:00. Outside these times, parking in the zone is free according to the municipality. The page also states that the rules in some districts change on 1 October 2026; so check your address on the city's interactive parking map.
For buyers who renovate before moving in, amersfoort.nl mentions a verhuisvergunning (moving permit), valid for three months in the zone of the new address. You apply for all permits via ParkeerService Amersfoort. For the city centre, the municipality recommends car parks to visitors; the digital visitor scheme (bezoekersregeling) applies in your own zone or in selected car parks in the city centre.
The city does not describe reserving a space for the removal van on these pages. Ask on 14 033 or by email to [email protected]. More about the German rules can be found on our parking restriction zone page.
Amersfoort: registering from abroad and bulky waste via ROVA
Anyone staying in Amersfoort for longer than four months within a six-month period must, according to amersfoort.nl, register in the population register (BRP). This is done in person at the Stadhuis (Stadhuisplein 1); underage children come too. You book the appointment no later than 5 days after the move by phone on 14 033 or via the city's appointment form. Bring a valid ID, proof of foreign civil status events, the rental or purchase contract (only the pages with the address, names and signatures) and, if subletting, the landlord's declaration with a copy of their ID. If documents are missing, the municipality cannot process the registration. For expats the page refers to the Utrecht International Center. If you later move within the Netherlands, you only report the move to the new municipality; online this is possible with DigiD from 28 days before to 5 days after the move.
For sorting out: the ROVA recycling centre (milieubrengstation, Nijverheidsweg-Noord 35) is free for residents; from 1 September 2026, according to the municipality, you will need your ROVA pass for it. ROVA collects large items free of charge; you book the date at rova.nl/inzamelkalender or on 033 422 85 00. The GRIP carts in the neighbourhood take small amounts, a maximum of two full shopping bags. Everyday information can be found in our article Living in Amersfoort; for the route from Berlin, read the long-distance moving guide.
