New on the Danube: How to Settle In to Linz
The first few weeks
Linz is the state capital of Upper Austria and, after Vienna and Graz, the third-largest city in Austria; it lies on both banks of the Danube. After 1945 Linz was regarded as a steel city centred on the works of today's voestalpine; later came the Brucknerhaus, Ars Electronica and its year as European Capital of Culture in 2009. Since 2014 the city has been divided into 16 statistical districts, from the Innere Stadt (inner city) and Urfahr to Ebelsberg and Pichling. This guide sorts out your first weeks: the registration form (Meldezettel), registration certificate, flat-hunting, local transport, parking and childcare. We handle the transport as a home removal.
We have no branch in Austria: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Linz and back. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), with additional insurance on request. The route, tolls and driving time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Linz. Whether a no-stopping zone is needed in front of the new address, we clarify with you early on; in many parts of the city centre, short-stay parking zones apply, which make space for the removal lorry tight.

Before Moving Day in Linz
No-stopping zone, old town, date
We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Linz. Before moving day we clarify with you whether a no-stopping zone is needed in front of the new address – short-stay parking zones apply in many places in the city centre –, how narrow the lanes and stairwells in the old town are, and whether a lift needs to be reserved in a high-rise building. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. You hand in the registration form yourself; we schedule the move-in so that the three-day deadline is easy to meet.

Linz
for newcomers
When you are new in Linz, many questions arise at once: where do I hand in the registration form, and can I do it online? What else applies to EU citizens? Can I get a long-term parking permit for my zone, and where can I find a crèche or nursery? And which of the 16 districts suits the route to university or work? We have summarised the information from the city of Linz below. For the move itself we advise you on timing, no-stopping zones and packing, so that everything is right on moving-in day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Linz
16 Statistical Districts: Where to Live in Linz?
Since 2014 Linz has been divided into 16 statistical districts. South of the Danube lie the Innere Stadt with the old town and Landstraße, Kaplanhof, Franckviertel, Bulgariplatz, Froschberg, Bindermichl-Keferfeld, Spallerhof, Neue Heimat, Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen, the industrial area at the port and, in the far south, Ebelsberg and Pichling; Ebelsberg is the largest district by area and population. North of the Danube lie Urfahr, Pöstlingberg, St. Magdalena and Dornach-Auhof with the Johannes Kepler University.
The new Grüne Mitte neighbourhood was built on the former freight station south-east of the main station. We deliberately do not give reliable rent figures – compare offers, pay attention to service charges and the deposit, and check the connection to the tram or bus before you sign.
Working, Studying and Culture in the Danube City of Linz
For a long time the largest employer was the steelworks of today's voestalpine; in addition there are the Linz AG group, technology companies and the Kepler University Hospital. Linz is a university city: the Johannes Kepler University had almost 22,000 students in the 2022/23 academic year, plus the University of Arts, the FH Upper Austria, the Anton Bruckner Private University and the University College of Teacher Education.
Culturally, Linz stands for the Brucknerhaus, Ars Electronica, the Linzer Klangwolke (sound cloud) and the Musiktheater am Volksgarten; in 2009 the city was European Capital of Culture. Local transport is run by Linz AG Linien with trams, trolleybuses and buses, and the tram stops underground directly at the main station. We set the moving date to match the handover of your flat.
Moving prices by flat size
We focus on fair prices with no hidden costs. In concrete terms this means: 1-room flats from €349, 2-room flats from €584, 3-room flats from €879 and 4-room flats from €1,299. For houses or villas there is always an individual quote, tailored to your needs. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.10/km. Feel free to arrange a free survey to clarify all the details.
What determines the moving price
The basis of the price calculation is always the volume of your belongings. Added to this are the distance, which we charge from €4.10/km, as well as the floor and whether a lift is available. If a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) is required, further costs arise. If you would also like to book furniture assembly or a shared load, we will gladly include this in the calculation.

Registration in Linz: Registration Form Within Three Days
In Austria the registration form (Meldezettel) is the basis of registration. The city of Linz sets a clear deadline: when you move into a flat, you must register at the new address within three days. When you change your main residence, deregistration and registration must also take place within three days. The form is available as a PDF download on the city's website. There is also a rule for moving away: if you move out without a new accommodation, a window of three days before to three days after moving out applies.
You have several ways to submit the registration form:
- in person at the citizens' service in the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), Hauptstraße 1-5, or at the service centre in the Wissensturm, Kärntnerstraße 26
- at one of the four city libraries Auwiesen, Dornach/Auhof, Ebelsberg and Pichling
- by post to the New Town Hall, passport, registration and election service department
- online for main and secondary residence with ID Austria
For in-person visits, the city recommends making an appointment, by telephone on +43 732 7070 or online. The city does not list in detail on its registration form page which additional documents and signatures are needed; if in doubt, ask the citizens' service ([email protected]). If you are coming from Germany, you can find how to plan the journey in our long-distance moving guide for Linz. A cross-border move is also covered on our page on international moves.
Housing, Parking and Childcare in Linz: City Services at a Glance
Besides registration, it is worth looking at the city's housing services. Under Wohnen in Linz (Living in Linz), the city lists, among other things, housing allowance, housing subsidies, non-profit housing associations, a flat-swap exchange and shared flats. For disputes over rent or housing law, there is an arbitration office for housing and tenancy matters.
Drivers should know about the long-term parking permit (Dauerparkberechtigung), which makes parking in short-stay zones easier for residents. According to the city of Linz:
- The requirements are your main residence in the zone applied for, no private parking space and a car with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg (as registered keeper, lessee or company car for private use).
- The cost for one year is a €40.10 administrative fee plus a €21 federal fee, and for two years €80.20 plus €21. This is not a parking fee for the short-stay zone itself. Only one permit is possible per person.
- The permit is digital and does not have to be kept in the vehicle. If your name, address or number plate changes, it expires; in that case inform the responsible department immediately ([email protected]). Four weeks before expiry, an email with a renewal link reminds you.
For families, the city lists crèches, nurseries and after-school care run by the city of Linz, childminders and all-day schools. The respective registration steps are in the individual chapters of the service guide. Our Linz moving guide explains neighbourhoods and costs.
