Moving to Linz: Urfahr, the old town and Ebelsberg
Living on the Danube
Linz is the state capital of Upper Austria and, after Vienna and Graz, the third-largest city in Austria. It stretches along both banks of the Danube: to the north lies Urfahr with the Pöstlingberg, to the south the old town and city centre around the Hauptplatz, and beyond the Traun the largest district, Ebelsberg. Since 2014 Linz has been divided into 16 statistical districts. For a long time the city was known as a steel town because of the steelworks of today's voestalpine; today it is also known for Ars Electronica and the Klangwolke. For your home move we clarify access and loading time in advance.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 592 km via Prague and České Budějovice to Linz – about 8.5 hours by lorry including a break. There is no customs duty on your household goods within the EU. If you live in the pedestrian zone, fixed loading times apply; outside them you need an exemption permit from the city. After moving in, you register within three days. More about the route in the long-distance move guide for Linz.

What we take care of when you move to Linz
From Berlin to the Danube
We have no branch in Austria; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify in advance when and where the vehicle may load – fixed loading times apply in the pedestrian zone, and on the slopes of Urfahr it depends on access. We pack, carry, transport and reassemble; you handle the Meldezettel (registration form) yourself. We are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. If the flat is not yet free, we store your belongings in Berlin in the meantime.

Part load for small amounts
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load to Linz can be cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments on the route via Prague to Upper Austria. In return, a time window applies instead of a fixed date; we check whether a tour fits when you enquire.

Your
move – fully organised
This guide shows how Linz is divided up, when you may load in the pedestrian zone, where you register within three days and what to bear in mind for work and study. The information on loading times and the Meldezettel comes from the City of Linz and oesterreich.gv.at. We do not give rents because they depend heavily on location and condition. How the journey from Berlin via Prague and České Budějovice works and which driving bans apply to heavy lorries in Austria is covered in the long-distance move guide.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Linz
Linz on both banks of the Danube: the districts at a glance
Since 2014 Linz has been divided into 16 statistical districts. South of the Danube lie the old town and city centre around the Hauptplatz and Landstraße, and further south districts such as Froschberg, Bindermichl-Keferfeld, Spallerhof and Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen; Kleinmünchen was incorporated in 1923. Beyond the Traun come Ebelsberg, the largest district, and Pichling. North of the Danube lies Urfahr with the 539 m Pöstlingberg, and in the north-east Dornach-Auhof with the Johannes Kepler University. For a move the areas differ greatly: loading times apply in the city centre, Urfahr has hillside locations, and the southern districts have many residential complexes with lifts. Which area suits you depends on your commute, school and budget.
Work, study and leisure in Linz
For a long time the largest employer was voestalpine with its steelworks; added to this are industry, administration as the state capital, hospitals and universities such as the Johannes Kepler University. We do not give specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition; compare current listings on Austrian portals. Leisure includes the Danube riverside, the Pöstlingberg with the Pöstlingbergbahn and festivals such as Ars Electronica, the Brucknerfest and the Klangwolke. Giving notice in Berlin, the Meldezettel within three days and, where applicable, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) after three months are best planned backwards from moving-in day. If you start looking early and are flexible on location, you will find a flat more easily; only sign the tenancy agreement once the moving date can be planned. If the flat is not yet free, we store your furniture in Berlin and deliver on the agreed date.

What makes a move more or less expensive?
Larger volumes mean more work, as does a long distance (from €3.80/km). Without a lift, carrying to higher floors takes more effort. A reserved parking restriction zone makes things easier on site. The service can be extended with furniture assembly and a part load.

Linz: pedestrian zone, loading times and exemption permits when moving
In Linz city centre it pays to check the loading times of the pedestrian zone. According to the City of Linz, loading is permitted without an exemption permit at the following times: in the old town and Herrenstraße from 6 am to 11.30 am and from 4 pm to 7 pm, in Klosterstraße and on the Hauptplatz from 6.30 pm to 11 am the following day, and in Landstraße and its side streets from 6.30 pm to 10.30 am. In Schmidttorgasse loading is not possible because the street is too narrow.
Anyone who has to load outside these times needs an exemption permit under § 45 StVO (Austrian road traffic regulations). The city assesses applications very restrictively and requires a significant personal or economic interest. The application is informal and goes to the building and district administration (Bau- und Bezirksverwaltung), Hauptstraße 1–5, telephone +43 732 7070. According to the city, the permit is granted for a maximum of two years; the page does not state costs or lead time. Nor does it say whether moves are expressly covered, so ask in advance.
If work on or next to the road affects traffic, for example with a crane or an aerial platform, the city refers to a permit under § 90 StVO via the BaustellenCenter Linz and asks for around two weeks' notice. The page does not say explicitly whether a move with an external furniture lift falls under this.
- Check the loading time for your street
- If needed, apply informally for an exemption permit early
- Allow around two weeks for a crane or aerial platform
How we plan stopping space is explained under parking restriction zone. On life in the city: guide for newcomers to Linz.
Linz: the Meldezettel at the Citizens' Service within three days
After moving in, in Austria you register at your new residence within three days. According to oesterreich.gv.at, registration is free of charge. You need a fully completed registration form (Meldezettel), which is also signed by the accommodation provider, as well as official documents such as a passport or birth certificate. Foreign nationals also present a travel document.
In Linz, according to the city, you register at the Citizens' Service (Bürger*innen-Service) in the Neues Rathaus, Hauptstraße 1–5, or at one of the city libraries (Auwiesen, Dornach/Auhof, Ebelsberg, Pichling). Registration by post is also possible. For main and secondary residences it can be done online with ID Austria. You can make an appointment by phone on +43 732 7070 or online; an appointment is recommended to avoid waiting times.
If you move from another flat within Linz, you also register the new main residence within three days. If you only deregister without registering elsewhere, the same deadline applies – three days before or after moving out.
- Fill in the Meldezettel in advance and have it signed by the accommodation provider
- Bring your ID and birth certificate
- Book an appointment at the Citizens' Service
We describe how your belongings travel from Germany in the guide to the long-distance move to Linz. For a move to Urfahr or the old town, we check access and carrying distances during the survey.
