GUIDE FOR NEW LEIDEN RESIDENTS

New in the University City on the Rhine: How to Settle In to Leiden

The first few weeks

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and brings your household goods to Leiden – this guide explains the paperwork.

Leiden lies in the province of South Holland at the confluence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn and, after Rotterdam, The Hague and Zoetermeer, is the fourth-largest city in the province; together with surrounding municipalities such as Leiderdorp and Oegstgeest, more than 254,000 people live here. Leiden University, founded in 1575, is the oldest in the Netherlands and shapes the city with more than 30,000 students. This guide sorts out the first weeks: BRP registration, the BSN, flat-hunting, parking and childcare. We handle the transport as a home removal.

We have no branch in the Netherlands: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Leiden and back. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), with additional insurance on request. Where the vehicle may load in the narrow streets of the Binnenstad (inner city) and which loading times apply is something we clarify with you in advance; route and schedule are described in our long-distance moving guide to Leiden.

Before Moving Day in Leiden

Loading times, canals, date

We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Leiden. Before moving day we clarify with you where the vehicle may load in front of the new address and which loading times apply in the Binnenstad, how narrow the stairs and doors are in the canal house and whether an external furniture lift is needed. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. You handle the BRP registration yourself – according to the gemeente (municipality) you should have an appointment within five working days of the move; we schedule the move-in to match.

Packing Service

We pack your household goods and label every box by room – in Leiden everything then goes straight into the right room of the new flat.

Office Move

For offices, laboratories and practices relocating to Leiden, we plan the move outside working hours so that business continues quickly – with our office move.

Student moves

For a room near the university or Hogeschool Leiden, a small van or a shared load is often enough – with a student move you only pay for what travels.

Furniture Transport

Wardrobes, sofa and fragile pieces are padded and secured; we look at the steep stairs of Leiden's canal houses beforehand – with our furniture transport.
CHECKLIST LEIDEN

Six First Steps in Leiden

These tasks come up after moving to Leiden – from the appointment at the Stadskantoor (city office) to childcare. Deadlines and fees come from the Gemeente Leiden; check the current status before your appointment (14 071).

01

Book a BRP appointment

If you stay at least four months, you register in person – an appointment within five working days of the move, free of charge, at the Stadskantoor at Bargelaan 190.
02

Tenancy agreement in your name

Bring: ID and a copy of the tenancy or purchase agreement; for a sublet, the main occupant's form with a copy of their ID.
03

BSN and health insurance

When you register you receive your BSN (citizen service number); you need it for work, the bank and Dutch health insurance. Partners and children come along.
04

Check residents' parking

In Zone A the first permit costs €54 per quarter according to the gemeente; since May 2024 there has been a waiting list there.
05

Find childcare

Kinderdagverblijf (day nursery) from 10 weeks, peuterspeelzaal (playgroup) from 2, buitenschoolse opvang (out-of-school care) from 4 years; you apply for the allowance from the Belastingdienst.
06

Bike instead of car

In the Binnenstad parking spaces are scarce; you usually reach the station, university and shops faster by bike.

Shared Load to Leiden

One room, shared loading space

If you are moving to Leiden for your studies or a job at the LUMC with little furniture, you do not have to pay for a whole lorry. With a shared load you use free loading space on a trip towards the Netherlands; we agree the delivery day in advance, and your belongings are covered under the HGB here too.

GUIDE

Leiden
for newcomers

Authorities, housing, everyday life

New in Leiden, many questions come up at once: when must I have the BRP appointment, and what applies to a sublet? When does the BSN arrive? Will I get a parking permit in Zone A at all, or end up on the waiting list? And where do I find childcare and the right allowance? We have summarised the Gemeente Leiden's information below. For the move itself we advise you on schedule, loading times in the Binnenstad and packing so that everything fits on moving-in day in your new home on the Rhine and the BRP appointment stays relaxed.

Paperwork in the first few days

BRP appointment within five working days, BSN, health insurance, parking permit: if you plan these before moving in, you settle in quickly. For a home removal, senior move or student move to Leiden we schedule the moving-in day to match.

Moving into a canal house

With our packing service, careful furniture transport and a suitable small transport, moving in works even in a narrow house on a canal or a terraced house in the Merenwijk in Leiden.

Companies, laboratories, special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, shared load or furniture taxi to Leiden, we coordinate time windows and loading times in the Binnenstad so that your business can continue quickly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Leiden

BRP, housing and everyday life in Leiden.
We do not quote reliable average rents because they vary greatly by district, size and fittings. The Binnenstad is in particular demand because of the university and short distances, while on the outskirts and in neighbouring municipalities such as Leiderdorp there is often more choice. Compare several portals, pay attention to deposit and service charges, and have the contract issued in your name – you need it for the BRP.

Binnenstad or Outskirts: Ten Districts in Leiden

Dutch statistics divide Leiden into ten districts: the Binnenstad and Binnenstad-Noord, the Stationsdistrict by Leiden Centraal station, Leiden-Noord, the Roodenburger, Bos- en Gasthuis, Mors and Boerhaave districts, and the Merenwijk and Stevenshof on the outskirts. The Binnenstad, with its canals and arms of the Rhine, offers short distances to the university and station but little parking space; in Zone A there has been a waiting list for residents' permits since 2024.

The Merenwijk in the north and the Stevenshof in the south-west are newer residential areas with more space. Many people also look in neighbouring municipalities such as Leiderdorp or Oegstgeest. We deliberately do not quote reliable rent figures – compare offers, pay attention to the deposit and proof of income, and check that the contract is in your name, because you need it for the BRP.

Studying, Researching and Commuting in the University City of Leiden

Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is the oldest in the Netherlands; it has seven faculties and more than 30,000 students. It includes the LUMC university medical centre, the university library, the observatory and the Hortus Botanicus, where in 1594 the first tulips bloomed on Dutch soil. In addition there are Hogeschool Leiden and the Naturalis natural history museum. Today the economy is shaped above all by the service sector.

From Leiden Centraal station, trains run directly to The Hague and Rotterdam, via Schiphol to Amsterdam, and to Haarlem; Schiphol Airport is around 30 km to the north-east. By car you reach Leiden via the A4 to the east and the A44 to the west. We schedule the moving date to match the flat handover and your BRP appointment.

Moving prices by flat size

We rely on fair prices with no hidden costs. In concrete terms, this means: 1-room flats from €349, 2-room flats from €605, 3-room flats from €884 and 4-room flats from €1,279. For houses or villas there is always an individual quote, tailored to your needs. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.80/km. Feel free to arrange a free survey to clarify all the details.

What Determines the Price for Leiden

We calculate transparently by volume and distance – the latter from €3.80/km. The floor and whether there is a lift are also included in the calculation. For a parking restriction zone we charge additional costs. If needed, we also offer furniture assembly and a shared load.

Registering in Leiden: Appointment, Documents and Requirements

According to the Gemeente Leiden, anyone moving to Leiden from abroad and intending to stay longer than four months must register in person in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), even if they were previously registered in the Netherlands. According to the municipality, you should have an appointment within 5 working days of the move. If you already have an address in Leiden, you can arrange an appointment in advance: after filling in the form you receive an email with a link to book online. (Re-)registration is free of charge.

  • Valid ID.
  • Copy of the purchase or tenancy agreement in your name; for a sublet, the completed form giving the main occupant's consent plus a copy of their ID.
  • For a first stay in the Netherlands: birth, marriage, divorce or death certificate, legalised if necessary.

Family members such as partners and children must come to the appointment. The requirement is that you live in the Netherlands for at least four months of the coming six months and have a valid residence permit or the nationality of an EEA country or Switzerland. According to the municipality, processing takes at least 5 working days. The municipality answers questions on 14 071, from abroad on +31 71 516 51 65, at the Stadskantoor (Bargelaan 190). Further notes on the route are in our long-distance moving guide to Leiden.

Everyday Life in Leiden: Residents' Parking, Waiting Lists and Childcare

In Leiden, residents' parking is organised by zones. For Zone A around the city centre, the Gemeente Leiden states: you must be registered in the BRP at an address in the zone, live in a home with its own kitchen and bathroom, and the vehicle may be no more than 6 m long and 2.4 m high. There is at most one Zone A permit per address; the first residents' permit costs €54 per quarter, the second €162 per quarter. You apply online with DigiD or at the counter by appointment on 14 071 (option 3).

Since 1 May 2024 a maximum number has applied in the city centre. Zone A is divided into four waiting-list areas; once the maximum is reached, your application goes on the waiting list. You then receive an email when it is your turn and have 6 weeks to complete the application. If you move within Leiden, the permit is not transferred: you cancel it at the old address and apply again.

For children, the municipality lists kinderdagverblijf (from 10 weeks until starting school), peuterspeelzaal (from 2 years), gastouderopvang (childminders) and buitenschoolse opvang from 4 years. The kinderopvangtoeslag (childcare allowance) is applied for from the Belastingdienst (tax authority), provided the provider is listed in the Landelijk Register Kinderopvang. More on neighbourhoods and costs is in our Leiden guide.

Always one step ahead.
