New in Bregenz: Registration Form Districts and Daily Life on Lake Constance

Bregenz Guide
Arriving in Bregenz, Between the Pfänder and the Lake
The first few weeks
Bregenz is the state capital of Vorarlberg and lies on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, between its local mountain, the Pfänder, and the lake. By population, it is the third-largest town in the state after Dornbirn and Feldkirch. The Bregenz Festival on the lake stage is internationally known, as are the Kunsthaus Bregenz and the larger of Austria's two Lake Constance ports. Trains run from the station directly to Lindau in Germany and St. Margrethen in Switzerland.
For newcomers from Germany: within the EU there is no customs declaration for household goods, but there is the duty to register with a Meldezettel (registration form) within three days. We are not a Bregenz company but come from Berlin and handle your home removal right to your new door. The route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Bregenz, and further destinations can be found under long-distance moves.

What
Newcomers to Bregenz Should Know
A move to Bregenz comes with some Austrian peculiarities: the registration deadline is only three days, the Meldezettel needs your landlord's signature, and federal fees apply the first time German ID documents are presented. When flat hunting, it is worth looking at the hillside locations on the Pfänder as well as Vorkloster and Rieden in the south-west. Many newcomers commute to Switzerland or Germany – so plan moving day carefully. On request we also take care of furniture assembly, so that you can settle in quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Bregenz
Districts of Bregenz – Where Newcomers Live
The municipality of Bregenz consists of the three cadastral municipalities of Bregenz, Fluh and Rieden. The town lies on the terraces of the historic Oberstadt (upper town) and the Ölrain, as well as along the lakeshore; in recent times the built-up area has grown mainly up the slopes of the Pfänder. The cadastral municipalities contain the four districts of Stadt, Vorkloster, Rieden – both incorporated in 1919 – and Fluh (since 1938). There are also neighbourhoods such as Mariahilf, Weidach and the area along the Bregenzer Ach with the Achsiedlung.
For each of these neighbourhoods, the city lists its own points of contact, such as the district offices an der Ach and in Mariahilf-Rieden. Which neighbourhood suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; before you commit, also inspect the access and stairwell, especially on the hillsides.
Work, Housing and Leisure in Bregenz
As the state capital, Bregenz is the seat of the Vorarlberg state government; then there are companies such as Hypo Vorarlberg Bank and the fittings manufacturer Julius Blum, as well as retail and tourism. Many residents commute to Dornbirn, Switzerland or Germany. Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences is in nearby Dornbirn. We deliberately do not quote specific rents here, because they depend heavily on location and fittings; search early via portals and non-profit housing associations, and keep the Meldezettel deadline in mind.
In your free time, Lake Constance beckons for swimming and sailing, the Pfänder for hiking, and the Bregenz Festival on the lake stage every summer. Since 1997 the Kunsthaus Bregenz has been one of the important museums of contemporary art, and the adult education centre offers numerous courses every year. You can reach Lindau and St. Margrethen directly by train. For newcomers, the easiest way to get to know the town is via the lake promenade, the Oberstadt and a trip up the Pfänder – and through the district offices the city lists for several neighbourhoods.

Registering in Bregenz: Meldezettel, Deadline and Registration Office
In Austria you register using the Meldezettel (registration form). According to the City of Bregenz, registration must take place within three days of moving in. The Meldezettel must be filled in completely and signed by the accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber). You must bring your passport, identity card or birth certificate with proof of citizenship, and if necessary further official documents with your current identity details. Only originals are accepted, not copies or mobile phone screenshots.
Registration itself is free of charge. However, federal fees apply the first time a document issued abroad is presented: according to the city, 42 euros for a passport, 21 euros for an identity card and 21 euros per sheet for other foreign documents. This affects everyone moving from Germany and dealing with Austrian authorities for the first time. If someone registers a main residence, their previous main residence is automatically deregistered. The city's website does not mention a requirement for an appointment; if you have questions, the registration office can help by phone. Which bodies need your new address afterwards is shown in the article Change of address: who to inform?.
- Registration office: Rathausstraße 4, 6900 Bregenz, telephone +43 5574 410 1250.
- Office hours: Monday to Thursday 7.30 to 16.30, Friday 7.30 to 13.
- Options: in person, through a third party, by post or online with a digital signature via the «Digitales Amt» app.
Everything else about the border and customs is brought together in our guide to a long-distance move to Bregenz.
Daily Life in Bregenz: Bulky Waste Voucher, Parking and District Offices
Every household in Bregenz receives a bulky waste voucher (Sperrmüll-Scheck) with the waste calendar each year. According to the city, on presenting it, households can drop off 1 m³ of bulky waste free of charge at the Bauhof Bregenz (Druckergasse 5). Home collection covers up to four cubic metres per household, and each additional cubic metre is charged. Collection days are Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 16 by arrangement with the Bauhof; only put the bulky waste out the evening before, sorted by material. Hazardous waste and building rubble are not taken. For larger clearances, our house clearance can help.
For parking, tariff zone A (the city centre, among others) costs 1.70 euros per hour and outer zone B 1.10 euros; the first 30 minutes are free in both zones. With the EasyPark app, billing is monthly and your number plate replaces the parking ticket. The resident parking card costs 14 euros per month or 140 euros per year and is not valid in short-stay parking zones. Bear this in mind when parking the removal van and, if necessary, plan a parking restriction zone.
As points of contact in the neighbourhoods, the city lists district offices: an der Ach (Achsiedlung, Brachsenweg, Schendlingen), Mariahilf-Rieden and the d'Weidacher association for Weidach. A first overview of the districts is offered by the moving guide for Bregenz.
