From Berlin to Bregenz
Moving to Bregenz: Lake Constance, the lake stage and the Pfänder
Guide
Bregenz is the state capital of Vorarlberg and lies on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, between the Pfänder ridge and the lake; after Dornbirn and Feldkirch it is the third-largest town in the state. The Bregenz Festival on the lake stage is known internationally, and the Pfänderbahn cable car has run up the Pfänder since 1927. A narrow strip of shoreline links Bregenz to Lindau and thus to Germany. Anyone planning a move to Bregenz must register in Austria within three days using the registration form (Meldezettel).
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 727 km via the A9, A7 and A96 to Bregenz; that is about 11 hours including breaks – so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Because both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Bregenz or from Bregenz back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Bregenz.

What we take care of when you move to Bregenz
Planning from Berlin, arrival on Lake Constance
We have no branch in Bregenz; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a period building in the Oberstadt, a flat in Vorkloster or a house in Rieden. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address, following the City of Bregenz's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of the flat. We label boxes and furniture by destination room.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Bregenz
Bregenz's districts at a glance
The Oberstadt around the town hall and Martinsturm charms with historic flair, narrow lanes and short walks to the centre – ideal for anyone who enjoys urban life without a car. Rieden and Vorkloster are popular residential quarters with good infrastructure, schools and local amenities, which is why many families and students of the nearby University College of Teacher Education Vorarlberg live here. If you are after calm and closeness to the lake, Weidach and the Seestadtpark offer well-kept developments only minutes on foot from the Lake Constance shore.
Fluh and Schendlingen sit higher up on the Pfänder slope and score with panoramic views of the lake and Alps, though they rely on a car or good bus links. Mariahilf in the south of the city offers a mix of commercial space and housing with direct access to the main road towards Dornbirn and Lindau. Every district has its own character – we are happy to advise which quarter suits your lifestyle.
Flat hunting and employers in Bregenz
Housing in Bregenz is in demand, especially by the lake. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location, size and condition. If you are looking for a flat, contact property management companies, non-profit housing associations and private landlords early and stay flexible about the district.
As the state capital, Bregenz is the seat of the Vorarlberg state government; companies in the city include Hypo Vorarlberg Bank and the Festival congress centre (Festspielhaus). Many working people commute to the Rhine Valley or across the nearby border to Switzerland and Germany. The motorway bypasses the city through the Pfänder Tunnel.
The lake with its harbour and lakeside gardens, the Pfänder as the local mountain and the cultural life around the Festival all add to the quality of life. If you are coming from Berlin, take the short three-day registration deadline and the loading times in the pedestrian zone into account when planning dates; we clarify both with you during the survey.
Cost overview for your move
Transparency matters to us: a 1-room flat costs from €359, a 2-room flat from €615, a 3-room flat from €915 and a 4-room flat from €1,329. For a house or villa you receive an individual quote; for long-distance moves the rate is from €3.85/km. Contact us for a free survey.
What makes a move cheaper or more expensive?
A large volume means more effort and therefore higher costs. The distance, which we charge from €3.85/km, as well as the floor and lift also have a noticeable effect on the price. A parking restriction zone ensures a smooth process but costs extra. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a shared load can be added at any time.

Registration and the registration office when moving to Bregenz
If you move to Bregenz, you must register promptly in Austria. According to the City of Bregenz, you are required to register within three days of moving into the accommodation. The responsible office is the “Meldeamt und Friedhöfe” department (registration office and cemeteries) in the town hall, Rathausstraße 4.
According to the city, you need:
- the completed registration form, signed by the accommodation provider,
- a passport, ID card or birth certificate together with proof of citizenship,
- further official documents if required, for example after a change of name.
The city only accepts originals – no copies and no mobile phone screenshots. According to the city, registration itself is free of charge. You can register in person, through a third party, by post or via the “Digitales Amt” app with a digital signature. When you register your main residence, your previous residence is deregistered automatically.
According to the city, the registration office is open Monday to Thursday from 7:30 to 16:30 and on Friday from 7:30 to 13:00 (phone +43 5574 410 1250). So plan the appointment for the first few days after moving in, ideally before the boxes are unpacked.

Access, pedestrian zone and bulky waste in Bregenz
For the removal lorry, access is crucial. According to the City of Bregenz, motor traffic is generally prohibited in the pedestrian zone. Delivery traffic is only permitted at the set loading times, and exceptions apply, for example for vehicles with an exemption permit. The city does not give the exact times on its project page; you can find them out from the citizens' service on +43 5574 410 1000. A 30 km/h speed limit has applied on all public roads in the town area since 26 February 2024.
For parking, the city distinguishes between tariff zones. In tariff zone A (city centre), according to the city, a parking charge applies daily from 8.00 to 12.00 and from 13.30 to 23.00. We clarify with you during the survey whether a parking restriction for the removal van is needed at your address; more on this under Parking restriction zone.
For clearing out before moving in, the city offers an annual bulky-waste voucher (Sperrmüll-Scheck). According to the city, households can use it to drop off 1 m³ of bulky waste free of charge at the municipal depot (Bauhof, Druckergasse 5). Alternatively, the municipal depot collects up to four cubic metres per household by appointment, on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Bulky items may only be put out the evening before, sorted by material; you or a representative must be present at the handover.
