Hanover for New Residents
Hanover: the Leine, the Maschsee and 51 Districts in a Green City
Settling in, not just moving
Hanover is the state capital of Lower Saxony and had around 558,000 inhabitants in 2025. The city lies on the Leine and consists of 51 districts in 13 boroughs. More than eleven per cent of the city area is public green space; the Eilenriede city forest near the centre alone covers 650 hectares, and south of the city centre lies the 78-hectare Maschsee lake. From 1714 to 1837 the kings of Great Britain were also rulers of Hanover – the Herrenhausen Gardens with the baroque Great Garden recall this period.
According to Wikipedia, the largest employers include Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Klinikum Region Hannover, Continental, Hannover Medical School (MHH), Nord/LB, the Sparkasse, VHV, Talanx and WABCO. You can study at Leibniz University, the MHH, the University of Veterinary Medicine or Hochschule Hannover. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Hanover; our page Moving Berlin – Hanover describes the route from Berlin – around 285 km via the A2.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Hanover
Old building, lift, parking restriction
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Hanover-based firm. That is why we ask precise questions before moving day: does your old building in Linden or the List have a lift, how wide is the stairwell, does the lorry need a parking restriction zone? Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price. For long distances, read Long-distance moves.

Hanover
for Newcomers
Many newcomers start their search in the old-building quarters: according to Wikipedia, Linden and the Oststadt are shaped by Art Nouveau, and Bödekerstraße is considered a grand boulevard. Others move to boroughs such as Bothfeld-Vahrenheide, Döhren-Wülfel or Kirchrode-Bemerode-Wülferode. In old buildings without a lift we clarify stairs and furniture dimensions in advance and apply for a parking restriction zone if needed. On request we take care of furniture assembly, piano transport and – if the flat is not yet available – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Hanover
13 Boroughs: Where Newcomers Live in Hanover
Hanover has 51 districts grouped into 13 boroughs: Mitte, Vahrenwald-List, Bothfeld-Vahrenheide, Buchholz-Kleefeld, Misburg-Anderten, Kirchrode-Bemerode-Wülferode, Südstadt-Bult, Döhren-Wülfel, Ricklingen, Linden-Limmer, Ahlem-Badenstedt-Davenstedt, Herrenhausen-Stöcken and Nord. Each borough has its own borough council.
According to Wikipedia, Linden with Lichtenbergplatz and the Oststadt with Bödekerstraße are shaped by Art Nouveau. Leibniz University is in the Nordstadt, the Maschsee lies south of the city centre, and the Eilenriede borders several boroughs. Misburg, Ahlem, Bemerode and other places only became part of the city in 1974. Where you live determines your light rail line, route to school and the carrying route on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
Important for everyday life: you can use any citizens' office in the city, regardless of your district, and since 2025 you can also register online. In many old-building quarters parking space is scarce – a parking restriction zone for the removal van is worthwhile there, and we apply for it on request.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Hanover
Hanover is the seat of the state government and parliament and a major place of work: according to Wikipedia, around 165,000 commuters came into the city every day in 2014. Large employers are Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Klinikum Region Hannover, Continental, the MHH, Nord/LB, the Sparkasse, VHV, Talanx and WABCO. The exhibition grounds with the Hermes Tower host major trade fairs. You can find flats via portals, housing companies and cooperatives; we do not quote rents because we have no reliable current source.
For leisure there is the Maschsee, the Eilenriede with sunbathing lawns and fitness trails, the Herrenhausen Gardens, the Sprengel Museum and the opera house. Every August, Linden hosts the Fährmannsfest, and the Expo Plaza the NDR 2 Plaza Festival. Üstra's light rail runs 14 lines over around 125 kilometres, plus the Hanover S-Bahn.

Registering in Hanover: Citizens' Office, Appointments and Online Registration
According to the state capital Hanover, you must register within 14 days of moving in. Since 2025 this has also been possible online, via the city's service portal (serviceportal.hannover-stadt.de/ewa). The requirements are the online ID function of your identity card or eID card and an official user account; if you do not have one, you register with BundID. Authentication is easiest by smartphone with the AusweisApp. Tenants also upload the landlord confirmation, after which the registration certificate is available to download.
The service has limits: it can only be used by adults, is not yet available to holders of an electronic residence permit and only covers a new main residence that replaces the previous one. Moves within Hanover and moves from other places in Germany are possible, with the exception of Saxony. Spouses and minor children at the same address can be registered together.
In person at the citizens' office: book appointments online at termin.hannover-stadt.de/buergeramt; according to the city, new appointments are released daily at around 8:00. Without an appointment, visits are only possible on Thursdays from 8:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 at the Aegi, Bemerode, Herrenhausen, Linden and Podbi-Park citizens' offices. You can choose any citizens' office in the city, regardless of your district. For matters with deadlines such as registration, the appointment confirmation serves as proof. Getting Around Hanover: Üstra, GVH Fares and the Deutschlandticket
Üstra operates the light rail and buses in the Hanover region and is part of the GVH fare association. If you want to manage without a car in everyday life, clarify which ticket suits you before the move. According to Üstra, you order the Deutschlandticket online; it is provided digitally in the app. Variants on offer include the subscription, Hannover sozial, Hannover Jugend and Hannover Ehrenamt, as well as a 1st-class supplement. There are also options such as the job ticket, regular journeys, occasional use and Sozial & Fair.
You can buy single tickets at sales points, from partners or in the Üstra easy app, which according to Üstra works without zones and without choosing a fare. Üstra's website mentions, for example, light rail line 10 (Limmer/Linden) and bus line 373 (Kirchrode); the GVH fare and conditions of carriage are linked there. You can reach the service hotline on +49 511 1668-0, and the service centre is at Karmarschstraße 30/32, 30159 Hannover.
If you bring a car, the city provides information on park-and-ride sites, car parks and multi-storey car parks in its “Mobil in Hannover” section. For moving day itself we offer a parking restriction zone. Other ticket types Üstra lists include the Niedersachsen-Ticket, the DB City-Ticket and the HannoverCard for tourists.
