Moving to Hanover: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Hanover
Moving to Hanover: the Leine, the Maschsee and 13 boroughs
Planning from Berlin
A move to Hanover takes you to the state capital of Lower Saxony on the Leine, with around 558,000 inhabitants one of the 14 largest cities in Germany. The city is divided into 13 boroughs and 51 districts – from the old-building quarter of Linden via the List and the Südstadt by the Maschsee lake to areas of detached houses on the outskirts. Hanover is known for the Herrenhausen Gardens, the New Town Hall with its arched lift and the second-largest exhibition grounds in the world. For your private move we clarify access, floor and parking zone in advance.
The route is easy to plan: around 285 km via the A2, about 4 hours by lorry including a break. We load in Berlin, drive to Hanover and reassemble everything there – in one day, depending on the volume. In Hanover you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). You receive the fixed price after the survey; background information on the route can be found under Moving Berlin – Hanover.

Moving to Hanover: arrange a survey
285 km, one contact person, one fixed price
For your move to Hanover, one call on 01625978461 is enough: we survey your flat by video or on site, ask about the floor and access at the destination and calculate the 285 km route. You then receive a written fixed price in which the parking restriction, assembly or storage are listed as separate items.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Hanover works with us
285 km, one team, one fixed price
Our team sets off from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin – we have no base in Hanover itself. That makes us plan all the more precisely beforehand: floor, lift, walking route and parking space, for example for a period building in Linden-Nord or a terraced house on the outskirts. In the pay-and-display zones, the maximum parking time of 2.5 hours is often not enough for a move – so we plan in a parking restriction in front of the new address. After the survey you receive a fixed price; liability for your belongings is governed by § 451e HGB (€620 per cubic metre). Details of the private move can be found here.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Hanover
13 boroughs, 51 districts: Hanover at a glance
Hanover is divided into 13 boroughs with a total of 51 districts. According to the state capital, the Mitte borough includes, for example, Calenberger Neustadt, Oststadt and Zoo; Linden-Limmer comprises the districts of Limmer, Linden-Mitte, Linden-Nord and Linden-Süd; and Nord includes Nordstadt, Hainholz and Vinnhorst, among others. Other well-known residential areas are the List and the Südstadt near the Maschsee.
The buildings are very mixed: Gründerzeit and post-war buildings in the quarters close to the city centre, often without a lift, plus housing estates and detached houses on the outskirts. For the move, the specific address is what counts – we clarify floor, stairwell, parking zone and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private move service adapts to it.
Universities, trade fair and the Herrenhausen Gardens
Hanover is a major university city: Leibniz University Hannover, Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University of Veterinary Medicine and Hochschule Hannover attract many newcomers every semester. With the second-largest exhibition grounds in the world and leading international trade fairs, the city is also a trade fair location – during major fairs there is correspondingly more traffic. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
To unwind, the Maschsee, the Eilenriede forest and the Herrenhausen Gardens with Herrenhausen Palace lie right in the city, plus the Erlebnis-Zoo. If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a new job, fix the moving day early so that registration and parking planning fit into the first two weeks. Parking and loading in Hanover: keeping an eye on pay-and-display zones
Whether a removal van may stand free of charge in Hanover depends on the location. The state capital distinguishes three charging zones for parking. In Zone 1, the city centre, parking tickets are required Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm; the maximum parking time is 2.5 hours. In the outer boroughs (Zones 2 and 3), the requirement applies Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, likewise with a maximum parking time of 2.5 hours.
- Zone 1: 1.30 euros per half hour; in the Steintor area, charges apply from 9 am to midnight.
- Zone 2: 1.00 euro per half hour.
- Zone 3: 0.50 euros per half hour.
For a move with several hours of loading time, the maximum parking time is therefore often not enough. A parking restriction for loading and unloading gives you planning certainty here. The city's responsible road traffic authority will clarify the application, deadline and fee; ask there early, ideally several weeks before the moving date.
Important: the city points out that parking tickets from Zone 1 are also valid for the remaining parking time at other paid parking spaces. Even so, it is better to plan with a fixed parking space. How we organise parking restriction zones can be read under Parking restriction zone; the city page can be found under Moving company Hanover.
Hanover's boroughs, registration and bulky waste
Hanover is divided into 13 boroughs. According to the state capital, for example, Linden-Limmer comprises the districts of Limmer, Linden-Mitte, Linden-Nord and Linden-Süd; Mitte comprises Calenberger Neustadt, Mitte, Oststadt and Zoo; and Nord comprises Brink-Hafen, Hainholz, Nordstadt and Vinnhorst. Clarify access, floor and parking zone in advance for every address.
After moving in, you must register within two weeks. The state capital offers electronic residence registration; for this you need an identity card with the online ID function, a BundID account and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) – according to the city, a tenancy agreement is not enough. Registration is free of charge. An appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) is necessary if, for example, you are giving up your previous main residence, moving from abroad or are a minor. There are citizens' offices in Aegi, Bemerode, Herrenhausen, Linden and the Podbi-Park, among other places; at some offices, visits without an appointment are possible on Thursdays.
aha is responsible for clearance and bulky waste. According to aha, it collects heavy and bulky items free of charge; you book the collection via a form. At the recycling centres, the maximum quantity is one cubic metre per day. For everyday life after moving in, there is ÜSTRA: with a valid ticket you can use all trams and buses in the GVH area.
