Salzgitter: Lebenstedt Bad and Thiede – where to live?

Salzgitter guide
Salzgitter: a city without a core, between steel and lake
Districts, housing, daily life
Salzgitter has been a city with over 100,000 inhabitants (Großstadt) again since 2015 and has an unusual structure: 31 districts in seven localities across around 224 km², but no historically grown central core. Anyone planning a move to Salzgitter will find industry, plenty of green space and the 75-hectare Salzgittersee lake; in Salzgitter-Bad half-timbered houses shape the old town, while Lebenstedt is the modern centre with the town hall.
Braunschweig borders the city area directly to the north-east, Hildesheim lies around 30 km to the west and Hanover around 50 km to the north-west. The A39 runs through the north of the city to the Salzgitter interchange on the A7. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), around 247 km away. We plan your private move to suit the district; the route is described under Berlin – Salzgitter.

What we clarify before moving day in Salzgitter
District, access, appointment
In a sprawling city with 31 districts, conditions vary greatly – from the half-timbered lanes of Salzgitter-Bad to the blocks of flats in Lebenstedt. For a parking restriction (Halteverbot), ask the city who is responsible for your street. We clarify these points before the appointment. Your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³); on request we take care of furniture assembly and packing fragile items.

Salzgitter

Where do I register – at the BürgerCenter in Lebenstedt or at the Kleines Rathaus in Salzgitter-Bad? And how do I order bulky waste collection? We advise you on the transport and give you a checklist for the first weeks, from the first viewing to the last box. Nursery, school and doctor should also go on the list early.

Frequently asked questions about living in Salzgitter
An overview of 31 districts without a central core
Lebenstedt is by far the most populous district and, with the town hall, the city library and a new shopping centre, the real centre; since 2013 the city centre has been reshaped with renovations and new buildings. Fredenberg, with around 11,900 inhabitants, also belongs to Lebenstedt. Thiede, with the old Steterburg convent, is one of the three most populous districts and lies close to Braunschweig.
Salzgitter-Bad in the south is the second-largest district, with half-timbered houses, a historic market square and thermal brine baths. Districts such as Gebhardshagen, Ringelheim or Watenstedt used to be independent villages and are rather rural in character. For the move this means: access, floor and parking options differ from place to place, and there can be many kilometres between two districts.
Employers, housing market and quality of life
Salzgitter is strongly industrial: Salzgitter AG has its headquarters here, almost 7,000 employees at the Volkswagen plant build around half of all the group's engines, and PowerCo has built a battery cell plant. MAN Truck & Bus, Alstom and Bosch also have sites here. Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences runs the Karl-Scharfenberg Faculty in Calbecht, with degree programmes focused on transport and logistics.
We deliberately do not quote reliable current rent figures here; compare offers by district and service charges. The Salzgittersee with its water-ski cable, the forests and the Harz foothills offer plenty of leisure; in Salzgitter-Bad one of the strongest thermal brine springs in Central Europe bubbles up. The city is connected to the Mittelland Canal via a branch canal (Stichkanal).

Salzgitter: registering at the BürgerCenter and parking restrictions on moving day
After moving in, the City of Salzgitter sets a clear deadline: you must register your new address within two weeks, and this also applies to a move within the city. Bring your ID documents, as the address is changed on them at the same time, as well as the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). Spouses and children can be registered at the same time without appearing in person, but their ID documents must be presented. According to the city, no form is provided; the change of address is printed on site from the registration data.
Two BürgerCenter offices are responsible: Lebenstedt (Joachim-Campe-Straße 6-8, tel. 05341 839-3812) is open Monday to Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., additionally on Monday and Thursday from 1.30 to 6.00 p.m. and on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1.30 to 3.00 p.m. Different hours apply at the Kleines Rathaus in Salzgitter-Bad (tel. 05341 839-2070). Appointments can be booked online. Vehicle registration has its own location, the Autoservicepark (Hans-Birnbaum-Straße 30, tel. 05341 839-3000), on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays only by appointment.
For a parking restriction on moving day, the city's range of forms under “Straßenverkehr” (road traffic) does not list a dedicated application. So call the city early (tel. 05341 839-0) to find out who is responsible for your street, and allow for the lead time. You can read how we organise the signage under parking restriction zone.
Salzgitter's 31 districts: Lebenstedt, Bad and bulky waste
Salzgitter is a sprawling city: according to the city, it is divided into 31 districts across almost 224 square kilometres, surrounded by forests and fields, in the Harz foothills and directly on the A39 motorway. Lebenstedt is the largest and modern district, Salzgitter-Bad the second largest, where half-timbered houses shape the townscape. Some localities have a village character. For your move this means: access, floor and parking options differ from place to place, so have the conditions shown to you in advance or sent by photo.
The city also lists renewal areas such as the Seeviertel and Kampstraße in Lebenstedt, the Ost- and Westsiedlung in Salzgitter-Bad and Steterburg in Thiede. Traffic routing there can change due to construction work. Ask about current road closures before your moving date.
You cannot register bulky waste with the city at short notice: according to SRB, a written application using the bulky waste order card is required, available among other places at the BürgerCenter offices and from SRB (Korbmacherweg 5). Collection and provision are subject to a fee; the amounts are listed in the city's fee schedule. Dropping items off yourself at Diebesstieg is also subject to a fee, while the city accepts household waste electrical appliances there free of charge. You can apply for a bulky waste container (5 m³) online or with the bulky waste card. How we plan moves in Salzgitter from Berlin is explained under moves in Salzgitter, and overland routes under long-distance move.
