Moving to Wolfsburg: costs process & districts

Wolfsburg guide
Wolfsburg: a young city with old districts
Localities, housing, daily life
Wolfsburg is a young city: it was founded in 1938 and has borne its current name since 1945. Today around 129,800 people live in 16 localities (Ortschaften) with 41 districts – from the city centre to old places such as Fallersleben and Vorsfelde. The city is shaped by the Volkswagen plant north of the Mittellandkanal. For your private move we take care of packing, transport and assembly.
Many people move to Wolfsburg for work, to Volkswagen, to suppliers or to the Ostfalia university of applied sciences. We are based in Berlin and operate nationwide – it is around 226 km to Wolfsburg via the A2 and A39, and the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Wolfsburg. You can find more about our services under Private move, and further destinations under long-distance moves.

What we clarify before moving day in Wolfsburg
Date, parking restriction, registration
Many moves to Wolfsburg are job-related and at short notice. That is why we set a date early, sort out the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) and check access and floors at the new address – whether a high-rise in Westhagen or an older building in Fallersleben. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source, and after the survey the price is set as a fixed price. Your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). Wolfsburg
for newcomers
A move to Wolfsburg brings a few tasks you should think about early: registering at the residents’ registration office, possibly a residents’ parking permit in central locations, and choosing a locality based on where you work. The Volkswagen plant lies north of the Mittellandkanal, and most residential areas to the south of it. We are happy to advise you on the checklist and timetable; you will find further destinations under Locations.

Frequently asked questions about living in Wolfsburg
16 localities: from the city centre to Vorsfelde
Wolfsburg is divided into 16 localities with 41 districts, and each locality has its own local council. The Stadtmitte (city centre) with the Schillerteich and the Nordstadt are central, while Detmerode and Westhagen are large housing estates with many blocks of flats. Fallersleben and Vorsfelde, with their historic centres, are older than the city itself.
Life is more rural in localities such as Fallersleben-Sülfeld or Barnstorf-Nordsteimke. The Volkswagen plant lies north of the Mittellandkanal; the southern bank was originally intended for housing. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and type of housing – during the survey we clarify access and the loading route.
Working, studying and living in Wolfsburg
The job market is shaped by Volkswagen and its main plant, alongside suppliers, service providers and public institutions. Since 1988 the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences has had a campus in Wolfsburg. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on the usual portals and with the city’s housing companies.
By car, Wolfsburg is connected to the A2 via the A39, and the main station lies on the high-speed line between Berlin and Hanover. For leisure there is the Allersee in the Allerpark, the Autostadt and the phaeno science centre. Our team sets your moving date to suit the handover of the flat and your start date at work.
Moving prices by flat size
Moving costs vary depending on the scope. As a rule: 1-room flats from €339, 2-room flats from €589, 3-room flats from €879, 4-room flats from €1,309. For houses and villas we always prepare an individual quote, as requirements can vary greatly. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.15/km. Book a free survey to get exact figures.
What the price in Wolfsburg depends on
Moving costs are based on volume, distance (from €4.15/km), floor and lift. A required parking restriction zone is also included in the calculation. Additional services such as a part load or furniture assembly are also possible.

How your move to Wolfsburg works: registering at the residents’ registration office
After moving into Wolfsburg you have two weeks to register. According to the City of Wolfsburg service portal, this applies to a new main residence as well as to a move within the city. The city’s residents’ registration office is responsible, and registration is free of charge.
- Online: for electronic registration you need a valid ID card or an eID card with the online ID function activated, a BundID account, the AusweisApp2 and a fully completed landlord confirmation. If the details are complete and plausible, processing usually takes three working days according to the city.
- In person: the city offers online appointment booking for the residents’ registration and vehicle registration office as well as for the Fallersleben and Vorsfelde administrative offices. In addition, you can take a queue ticket from 7:30 in the morning; only a limited number is available each day, and longer waiting times are possible.
- Contact: you can reach the citizens’ services service centre on 05361 28-1234 or at [email protected], Porschestraße 49, 38440 Wolfsburg.
Set your moving date so that your landlord’s confirmation is available in time. Which other bodies you should inform after the move is listed in our overview Change of address: who to inform?. If you would like to know in advance how we plan moves from Berlin to Wolfsburg, you will find the key facts on our page Moving company Wolfsburg.
Bulky waste, rubbish and your vehicle: what to sort out after moving to Wolfsburg
Moving in and out often produces bulky waste. For Wolfsburg, the city’s service portal names the Wolfsburg waste management and street cleaning service (WAS) as the contact. The appointment is booked online, and the city points out the following key points:
- The lead time for appointments is 6 to 8 weeks; collection takes place on the collection day between 06:00 and 14:00.
- Up to 4 appointments for a normal household quantity of no more than 5 m³ are free of charge.
- Above 5 m³, each additional cubic metre or part thereof costs €30.
- Express bulky-waste appointments within 3 to 7 working days and appointments from the fifth collection onwards cost €100.00 (up to 5 m³).
According to the portal, the municipal public-law institution in Wolfsburg is responsible, and appointments are allocated online. So book the bulky-waste collection early, ideally while you are planning the move. You can find collection dates and the waste A–Z via the waste disposal page.
If you are bringing a car, according to the service portal you can handle registration online, provided the vehicle was first registered after 01.01.2015. You need an ID card with the online function activated, the eVB number from your insurer and an IBAN for vehicle tax. Everything else goes through the residents’ registration and vehicle registration office. Our house clearance service can be an alternative for larger quantities.
