Moving to Celle: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Celle
Moving to Celle: half-timbering, palace and the Aller
Guide
Celle lies in the glacial valley of the Aller, around 40 km north-east of Hanover, and with almost 67,000 residents it is the district town of the district of Celle. The town is known for its old town with over 400 half-timbered houses and its Renaissance and Baroque palace. Celle is also a centre of the judiciary, home to the Higher Regional Court, and a base for deep-drilling and oil and gas technology. If you are planning a move to Celle, take the narrow lanes and old stairwells of the old town into account when planning.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 275 km via the A2 to Celle; that takes about 3.5 hours including a break. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Celle or from Celle back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Celle. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often cheaper.

What we take on when you move to Celle
Planned in Berlin, arriving on the Aller
We have no branch in Celle; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a half-timbered house in the old town, an old building in Blumlage or a house in Klein Hehlen. We apply in good time for the parking restriction outside the new address in line with the city's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition; compared with Hanover, Celle is considered cheaper. Celle has mechanical engineering companies and firms in deep-drilling and oil and gas technology, such as Baker Hughes and Halliburton, as well as electronics and the food industry. As a centre of the judiciary, Celle is home to the Higher Regional Court and the Lower Saxony-Bremen Regional Social Court; the district administration is also a major employer.

Parking restriction when moving to Celle: application to the city's road traffic authority
If you are moving to Celle and the removal van is to stand right outside the building, you need an approved parking restriction. According to the City of Celle's service portal, the city's road traffic authority grants the permit; the legal basis is § 45 and § 46 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). Without a permit you may not reserve parking spaces on public roads, and other road users do not have to respect an unapproved reservation.
According to the city, your application must state:
- Your name and old and new address
- The purpose and period of the parking restriction
- The area as precisely as possible (street and house number, ideally with a sketch)
- The length of the zone, which is usually based on the length of the removal vehicle
- The date for putting up the signs, if known
According to the city, the signs should be in place three to four days before the moving date, depending on the location. Fees are charged for ordering and hiring the signs; the portal does not give amounts. Signs can also be hired from traffic engineering firms or transport companies. For queries, the city gives the number 05141 123242. So apply early enough that the application, approval and sign order are completed before the moving date. Celle's old town: half-timbered houses, narrow gaps and access when moving
Celle's old town is known for its half-timbering. According to Celle Tourismus, there are about 480 or more half-timbered houses in the town centre, and the site also speaks of almost 500; it describes Celle as one of the densest closed ensembles of half-timbered buildings in the world. The core of the buildings dates from shortly before 1500 to around 1800. According to the site, the oldest dated surviving house stands at Am Heiligen Kreuz 26 (1526).
The houses are mostly two to three storeys high and three to seven bays wide, with gables facing the street. According to the site, the narrow gap between the buildings ("Zwische") measures 20 to 60 centimetres. As well-known old-town locations, the source names Kalandgasse, Stechbahn, Zöllnerstraße and Großer Plan, among others.
For your move it is worth clarifying access, stairwell and door widths in detail during the free survey, because historic buildings are individually built. According to the source, many houses are listed buildings; it does not give an exact number. We check whether carrying, a furniture lift or another solution fits, and plan the parking restriction and time window accordingly; that way we avoid delays on moving day. Further information about the town can be found on our Celle page and in the Living in Celle guide.
