Moving to Osnabrück: districts, universities and authorities
Arriving well
With Beste Umzug Unternehmen you plan your move to Osnabrück from the first survey to the last box. Our home move service covers packing, transport and assembly; we state the fixed price after the survey. Whether a student room in the Wüste or a family home on the Sonnenhügel – we clarify access, loading times in the pedestrian zones and the no-parking zone with the city's traffic management department (Verkehrslenkung) in advance. Call us on 01625978461 for an individual quote.
With its university, university of applied sciences and industry, Osnabrück is a sought-after city; moving dates are scarce at the start of term, so plan early. Our liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB, § 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance for valuable items is available. You can read what a household move includes under Home move. We are based in Berlin, around 419 km away, and also handle moves from Cologne or Hamburg as a long-distance move.

City centre, villa, shared flat
In Osnabrück city centre, fixed loading and delivery times apply in the pedestrian zones, for example from 6 am to 10.30 am in Große Straße. For the no-parking zone, the traffic management department only issues the order; you or we organise the signs, which must be in place three full days beforehand. Frequently asked questions about living in and moving to Osnabrück
Districts in Osnabrück: where you will feel at home
Osnabrück is divided into districts with very different characters. The Westerberg, with its villas, the Botanical Garden and its proximity to the campus of the university and the university of applied sciences, is regarded as a sought-after residential area for families and academics. The city centre scores with short distances, historic flair around the cathedral and town hall and good bus and rail connections, but is more densely built up. Living is often cheaper in Schinkel or Eversburg.
Sonnenhügel and Hellern offer quiet, family-friendly areas with many detached houses. Students are often drawn to the Wüste, which borders the Westerberg and has many shared-flat offers. For a move to one of these districts, early planning via our home move service pays off, because the streets in some older neighbourhoods are narrow.
Job market, universities and quality of life in Osnabrück
Osnabrück is known as the "City of Peace", because the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated here and in Münster in 1648. Major employers are the Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück, the paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller and the copper processor KME; then there are Osnabrück University and the University of Applied Sciences, which bring many students to the city. This mix of industry, science and medium-sized businesses makes Osnabrück attractive for career starters and skilled workers.
Leisure options include the Piesberg, the Nettebad pool and the banks of the Hase. Via the A1, A30 and A33 and the main station, Osnabrück is well connected to Bremen, Münster, Hannover and the Netherlands. If you are moving here for work or study, you will find further destinations in our locations overview.

No-parking zone for your move in Osnabrück: application, fee and lead time
In Osnabrück you apply for the no-parking zone for the removal van to the city's traffic management department (Department 62). The City of Osnabrück service portal explains that the traffic authority order is the permission to put up mobile traffic signs in public space. You have to organise the signs themselves separately, because the authority only grants the permission.
Key points according to the city:
- According to case law, there must be three full days between putting up the signs and the start of their validity.
- The city therefore recommends submitting the application at least 10 days before the date.
- The fee for the traffic authority order is €30.
- The fee for an exemption permit is also €30.
- The legal basis is § 46 (1) StVO.
An order is generally only issued for carrying out loading activities. It does not serve to reserve parking spaces. An exemption permit, on the other hand, allows driving in certain areas such as pedestrian zones and is only possible in special situations. You submit the application via the service portal; you need to log in there to do so.
If you are moving from Berlin to Osnabrück, it is best to plan the application straight after the date is confirmed. You will find more on planning on our page about the no-parking zone.
Osnabrück: pedestrian zones, registration and bulky waste after the move
For Osnabrück city centre, the city publishes an overview of loading and delivery times in the pedestrian zones (as of June 2026). According to the list, for example, 6 am to 10.30 am applies in Große Straße and 6 am to 12 noon and 5 pm to 7 pm in Bierstraße. On the Markt and in Neue Straße, loading is possible all day, while Mühlenstraße has no loading times. Clarify in advance with the traffic management department whether and how these times apply to your move.
For registration, the service portal gives a deadline of two weeks after moving in. You can register online with the electronic registration of residence or in person by appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt). Processing takes up to three working days. When you move in, the city informs the registration office of the municipality you are leaving, so you do not need to deregister at your old address.
For bulky waste, the city states on nachhaltig.osnabrueck.de a fee of 29 euros per 5 cubic metres or part thereof. Registration is online, and the collection takes place on the regular collection day. An express or preferred date costs 78 euros for the first 5 cubic metres, with collection then within two working days.
You will find further information about the city under Removal company Osnabrück.
