Everything important about moving in Osnabrück
We recommend at least two to three weeks' lead time, especially at the start of semester in October or April, when demand for moving dates in Osnabrück is particularly high.
Moving in Osnabrück: the process in the City of Peace
With around 166,000 inhabitants, Osnabrück is the fourth-largest city in Lower Saxony after Hanover, Braunschweig and Oldenburg. Together with Münster, around 50 kilometres away, the City of Peace was the venue for the negotiations on the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. For a move in Osnabrück this means an old town around St Peter's Cathedral with narrow staircases, a densely built city centre and around 28,000 students at the university and the university of applied sciences who often change flats.
Our business is not based in Osnabrück but at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; for the move, the team travels out with the lorry. The process begins with a free survey by video or by arrangement, followed by a fixed-price offer. On moving day we take care of packing, furniture transport and, on request, the complete private move including dismantling and assembly. In the old town and around Neumarkt, good advance planning is decisive, as parking is scarce.
The A1 in the north-west, the A30 in the south and the A33 in the east run around Osnabrück; at the Lotte/Osnabrück interchange the A30 meets the A1. This makes moves into the city and the surrounding area easier, including across the state border into North Rhine-Westphalia. We check one-way streets, delivery zones and the pedestrian zone for your address in advance; this saves time and makes your move in the city on the Hase more relaxed.
Districts and residential areas in Osnabrück
Osnabrück is divided into many districts of very different character – which also influences the planning of your move. The city centre around the cathedral, town hall and palace gardens is characterised by period flats, narrow streets and little parking, which is why a parking restriction zone often makes sense here. Those who prefer a quieter setting will find many detached houses with gardens in Sutthausen, Hellern or Atter, through which the Düte flows.
The Schinkel district is regarded as a lively, affordable residential quarter where many students and young families live; the university and the university of applied sciences have their campus on the Westerberg. Dodesheide and Wüste have a mixed development of older houses and newer housing estates. Those looking to be close to the port and industry often end up in Eversburg or the Gartlage, where commercial and residential areas lie side by side.
In the south-east, Voxtrup and Nahne are green, family-friendly outlying areas with short distances to the A30. Each of these districts brings its own requirements for parking permits, approach routes and staircase widths. We plan vehicle size, access and time window to suit your district after the survey, so that everything runs smoothly on moving day – whether a period building in the city centre or a detached house in Atter.
Moving costs in Osnabrück: transparent prices
The moving costs in Osnabrück depend on the size of the flat, floor, distance and additional services such as packing or assembly. So that you can budget in advance, we give you realistic guide values to serve as orientation for your planning. As a rule: the earlier you book, the more likely your preferred date can be met, especially around the start of semester at Osnabrück University, when demand rises.
| Flat size | Ø moving costs | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1-room flat | from €354 | 3–4 hours |
| 2-room flat | from €589 | 4–6 hours |
| 3-room flat | from €889 | 6–8 hours |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €3.80/km | depending on distance |
Additional costs may arise for parking restriction zones, which are between €30 and €100 per day depending on the district and the duration of the permit. If you also need clearance before the move, for example when changing flats in the old town with a lot in the cellar, you can combine it directly with the move and save coordination effort.
Special services such as a piano transport or a senior move with particular consideration can also be integrated into the overall package. After a short survey, our team will draw up a binding fixed-price offer without hidden costs, so that you can budget your move in Osnabrück with confidence.
Parking restrictions and parking when moving in Osnabrück
Anyone moving in Osnabrück knows the problem: especially in the old town, around Neumarkt and in densely built quarters such as the Wüste, parking is scarce and the streets are narrow. So that the removal van can be loaded and unloaded without obstruction, you need a parking restriction zone. According to the city, the traffic management department (Verkehrslenkung) is responsible; the applicant organises the signs themselves.
According to our price list, such a zone costs between €30 and €100 per day depending on the district and duration, and the city charges €30 for the order. In the city centre, with its pedestrian zone and narrow one-way streets around the cathedral, an exemption permit for loading and unloading may be needed instead of a parking restriction. In districts such as Schinkel, Dodesheide or Sutthausen with wider residential streets, implementation is usually simpler; according to the city, however, a parking restriction is only for loading, not for reserving parking spaces.
What matters:
- According to the city, apply at least 10 days before the date via the service portal
- Three full days between putting up the signs and the restriction taking effect
- Inform neighbours about the moving day in good time
- Discuss narrow old-town streets with us in advance
Especially for moves into multi-storey period buildings without a lift, which are common in the city centre, a well-planned parking restriction zone secures short carrying distances and thus a quicker, more cost-effective process. This saves you time and extra costs from long distances between the vehicle and the flat door.
Osnabrück, Lower Saxony and Berlin: moves via the A1 and A30
The A1 (Hansalinie), A30 and A33 motorways run around Osnabrück. This makes moves to the Ruhr area, to Bremen and Hamburg or towards Hanover and Berlin easy to plan. It is around 419 road kilometres to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit, for example via the A30 and the A2.
We also plan moves within Lower Saxony, for example to Hanover, Braunschweig, Hildesheim, Göttingen, Salzgitter, Celle, Oldenburg or Wolfsburg. We set the route, breaks and arrival window in advance.
For long-distance moves our price list states from €3.80 per kilometre; the fixed price after a survey is binding, depending on the moving volume and vehicle. If your household goods do not fill a whole lorry, we offer an affordable part load, where your goods are carried together with other consignments on the same route. This saves costs, especially on long routes.
For moves over long distances, we offer private and business customers interim storage on request if the new tenancy does not follow on directly from the old one. This keeps your move predictable and stress-free even over long distances.

Office & company moves in Osnabrück, professionally organised
As a business location with Hochschule Osnabrück, Osnabrück University and numerous medium-sized companies and industrial firms around the Piesberg and the industrial estates in the east of the city, Osnabrück is a place where office and company moves are frequent. Whether relocating a law firm from the city centre, moving a manufacturing business from an industrial estate or expanding an office near the main station – we ensure the transition is as disruption-free as possible.
Our office move service covers dismantling and assembling office furniture, professional transport of IT equipment and labelling and reassembly according to a structured room plan. Especially for companies that want to maintain ongoing operations during the move, we often plan moves in the evening or at the weekend to minimise downtime.
Our services for business customers include:
- Dismantling and assembly of office and conference furniture
- Safe transport of servers, monitors and file archives
- Labelling system for quick reassembly at the new location
- Scheduling outside business hours on request
- Combination with clearance of old office space
We also plan practice moves, for example of medical practices around Neumarkt or Schölerberg – here we place particular emphasis on the sensitive handling of medical equipment and patient records. We check access, parking rules and delivery zones at the old and new locations in advance, so that your office move runs efficiently and with as short an interruption as possible.
Student moves in Osnabrück: process & booking
With Osnabrück University on the Westerberg and Hochschule Osnabrück on the Caprivi campus, the city is an important higher education location in Lower Saxony. Demand for flexible and affordable moving solutions for students who switch between rooms in shared flats in Schinkel, Sonnenhügel or the city centre at the start or end of semester is correspondingly high.
Our student move service is specially tailored to smaller volumes: compact vehicles, short standing times and a fair fixed price from €354 for a 1-room flat. As many students live in period buildings without a lift, especially in the city centre and around Neumarkt, we calculate floor surcharges transparently and without hidden costs.
This is how booking works:
- Short enquiry by phone, email or online form
- Details of number of rooms, floor and preferred date
- Non-binding fixed-price offer
- Confirmation of the date, with lead time at the change of semester
- Carrying out the move including transport of furniture and boxes
Especially at the start of semester in October or April, demand for moving dates in Osnabrück is particularly high, so we recommend booking early, ideally two to three weeks in advance. Our process is deliberately kept straightforward: after your enquiry you receive a suitable offer, and on moving day our team from Berlin takes care of the entire transport – from the basement flat in the Wüste to the new flat-share in Schinkel. This leaves students more time for exam preparation instead of lugging boxes.
Applying for a parking restriction in Osnabrück: service portal, lead time and fee
Anyone in Osnabrück who needs a parking restriction for moving day submits the application online via the service portal, according to the city of Osnabrück. This requires a user account, which you can create there yourself. Department 62, Verkehrslenkung (traffic management), is responsible; the city cites § 46 (1) StVO (Road Traffic Regulations) as the legal basis.
Important for your planning: the traffic authority's order is the permission to put up mobile traffic signs. You have to organise the signs yourself. According to the city, there must be three full days between putting up the signs and the restriction taking effect. The city recommends submitting the application at least 10 days before the date. According to the city, the order costs €30.00. A parking restriction is generally only for loading and not for reserving parking spaces.
If we have to drive the vehicle into an area such as a pedestrian zone, an exemption permit for loading and unloading may be an option instead. According to the city, it also costs €30.00 and is only possible in special situations. Talk to us early: we clarify with you which solution suits your address and set the moving date accordingly. You can find more about the process under parking restriction zone for your move.
After moving to Osnabrück: re-registration, residents' parking and bulky waste
After moving in, you must register your main residence in Osnabrück within two weeks. According to the city, registration is free of charge, online and at the citizens' office. Online, you need an ID card with the online function and PIN, a BundID account, the AusweisApp and, if renting, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). The city states up to three working days for checking. If you prefer to go to the citizens' office, book an appointment via the city's online booking system.
If you have a car, keep the residents' parking permit in mind. The city issues it for six months (€80) or twelve months (€120). It is only valid in your own residents' parking zone, is tied to the number plate and does not guarantee a parking space. If you move out of the zone, the permit must be returned.
The Osnabrücker Servicebetrieb helps with clearing out before the move: bulky waste can be registered online and, according to the city, costs €29 per 5 cubic metres or part thereof, up to 15 cubic metres online. You can hand in individual items more cheaply at the Piesberg waste management centre (Fürstenauer Weg 152). You can read which districts and costs are relevant to you in our moving guide for Osnabrück; the Lower Saxony page gives an overview of the state.
