Everything important about moving in Göttingen
Depending on the size of the flat, a move within Göttingen costs from €359 for a 1-room flat, from €589 for 2 rooms and from €915 for 3 rooms. The exact price depends on the floor, distance and any additional services required, such as a parking restriction zone.
Moving in Göttingen: the process in the university city
A move in Göttingen comes with some particular features that are typical of the university city in southern Lower Saxony. Around 26 per cent of the inhabitants are students, and city life is shaped by the Georg-August-Universität, the oldest and largest university in Lower Saxony. The old town around the Gänseliesel, the Old Town Hall and St John's Church is densely built: narrow one-way streets, the pedestrian zone and limited access options call for careful route planning. Praktik Transport und Umzüge comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and checks the access for every address in advance, from Weender Straße to Groner Landstraße.
The A7 Hanover–Kassel runs through the western part of the city; south of the city, the A38 towards Halle and Leipzig joins at the Drammetal interchange, plus the B3 and B27. The ICE station connects Göttingen directly with Hanover, Kassel and Frankfurt am Main. It is around 335 road kilometres from our base in Berlin to Göttingen – so the journey and schedule are part of the offer from the start.
The typical process begins with a free survey by video or an online assessment of the moving volume. We then draw up a transparent offer that takes into account the floor, lift, distance to the new home and any parking restriction zones required. On moving day we take care of packing, transport, dismantling and reassembling the furniture and, on request, setting up the new flat.
Demand for moves in Göttingen is especially high during the semester breaks and at the start of semester, as many students and commuters move within the city or from the surrounding area. Planning early secures good dates and avoids stress in the already busy university city.
Districts and residential areas in Göttingen
Göttingen is divided into numerous districts of very different character, which plays an important role in planning a move. The city centre stands out for its historic period buildings, narrow access roads and many student flats on upper floors without a lift – practical skill is needed here when moving furniture. The Nordstadt around the North Campus of the Georg-August-Universität is characterised by student halls of residence and shared flats, while the Weststadt offers quieter residential areas with apartment buildings.
Families and working people often move to Geismar or Nikolausberg, where detached houses and well-kept gardens dominate. The Grone district west of the city centre offers apartment buildings and housing estates of varying ages. Weende in the north of the city offers a mix of commercial space and housing, while Herberhausen and Deppoldshausen have a more village-like character with good connections to the city centre.
- City centre & old town: historic half-timbered houses, narrow streets, many rooms in shared flats
- Nordstadt: close to the university, student halls, high demand at the start of semester
- Geismar & Nikolausberg: quiet residential areas, detached houses
- Grone: west of the city centre, housing estates
- Weende & Weststadt: mixed residential areas, good infrastructure
We also serve the surrounding municipalities such as Rosdorf, Bovenden and Adelebsen when a move goes beyond Göttingen's city limits. Whether a period flat in the city centre or a new build in Grone – we adapt the moving logistics to your location after the survey.
Moving costs in Göttingen: a transparent price overview
The moving costs in Göttingen depend on several factors: the size of the flat, distance, floor, accessibility and any additional services required, such as clearance or piano transport. We calculate every move individually and transparently so that there are no unpleasant surprises.
| Flat size | Price from | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1-room flat | €359 | Student apartment, Nordstadt |
| 2-room flat | €589 | Period flat, city centre |
| 3-room flat | €915 | Family flat, Geismar |
| Long-distance move | from €4.10/km | Göttingen – Berlin, Hanover, Kassel |
| Parking restriction zone | €30–100/day | City centre, narrow old-town lanes |
Additional costs may arise if goods have to be carried over several floors without a lift, which is not unusual in Göttingen's old town. The distance between the old and new home, for example from the city centre to Grone or to a neighbouring village such as Rosdorf, also affects the final price. For smaller transports, such as individual items of furniture, we also offer a cost-effective part load.
Our aim is to give you a fair offer without hidden costs. After a short inventory – by video consultation if you prefer – you receive a binding fixed-price offer for your move in Göttingen. This way you keep full control over the costs from the start.
Parking restriction zone and parking when moving in Göttingen
Anyone moving in Göttingen city centre or in densely built quarters such as the Nordstadt knows the problem: scarce parking and narrow streets make loading and unloading the removal van difficult. Especially in the pedestrian zone around Weender Straße, near the Groner Tor or in the lanes of the old town, there is often no regular parking available.
That is why we plan a parking restriction zone in front of your door in good time. The permit is issued by the city of Göttingen; you decide who puts up the signs: yourself or the moving company. According to our price list, the costs are between €30 and €100 per day depending on location and duration. Important: furniture transports are not permitted in Lower Saxony on Sundays and public holidays, so the moving day must be a working day or a Saturday.
- Submit the application to the city of Göttingen early
- Put up signs in good time before the move, not before approval
- Measure the length of the zone according to the lorry and trailer
- Especially important in the city centre, the Nordstadt and narrow quarters with period buildings
In districts such as Geismar or Nikolausberg with many detached houses, the parking situation is usually more relaxed, but we still check every address individually in advance. For housing estates with underground car parks or narrow access roads, we plan alternative approach routes to avoid delays. The deadline, fee and the city's contact are set out below in the section on applying.
Talk to us early so that there is enough lead time for the permit – demand for moving dates in Göttingen is especially high around the start of semester.
Göttingen, Berlin and Lower Saxony: moves via the A7 and A38
The A7 from Hanover to Kassel runs through the western part of Göttingen, and south of the city the A38 towards Halle and Leipzig begins at the Drammetal interchange. This makes moves to the north, south and east easy to plan. It is around 335 road kilometres to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit.
For long-distance moves our price list states from €4.10 per kilometre; the fixed price after a survey is binding, depending on the moving volume and destination. Within Lower Saxony we plan, for example, moves to Hanover, Braunschweig, Hildesheim or Salzgitter, as well as to Wolfsburg, Celle, Oldenburg or Osnabrück.
- Moves from Göttingen, according to the price list from €4.10/km
- Connections via the A7, A38, B3 and B27
- Combined transports via part load for smaller volumes
- Göttingen–Berlin: around 335 road kilometres from Stromstraße 21
Many students and researchers move to other cities after their studies or for a new job; we plan the route, breaks and arrival window for this in advance. Whether a move within Lower Saxony or right across Germany – we plan your route from Göttingen carefully and punctually.

Planning an office or company move in Göttingen professionally
Göttingen is not only a university city but also home to major companies and research institutions, such as Sartorius AG, headquartered in Göttingen, and several Max Planck Institutes. An office move in Göttingen therefore requires particular care so that operations are disrupted as little as possible. Our office move service is designed for offices, practices, laboratories and commercial businesses.
We plan the move in close coordination with your company, usually outside core working hours or at the weekend, to minimise downtime. This includes properly dismantling and assembling office furniture, safely packing IT equipment and files, and systematically labelling all goods so that the new location can be set up again quickly.
- Moving offices, law firms and medical practices in the city centre and industrial estates
- Safe dismantling and assembly of server cabinets and technical equipment
- Individual scheduling, including outside business hours
- Moves for start-ups and institutes around the University of Göttingen
- Professional clearance of old office space after moving out
For commercial premises in industrial estates such as Grone-Süd or around Industriestraße, we also plan vehicles and staff after the survey so that larger office moves are completed on schedule. If needed, we also coordinate moves between several sites in Lower Saxony, for example when a company expands from Göttingen to Hanover or Braunschweig.
We discuss laboratory equipment and sensitive devices in detail in advance so that packing and transport are suited to them. This ensures a smooth transition to your new business premises in Göttingen.
Student moves in Göttingen: process and booking
Around 26 per cent of Göttingen's residents are students, and the Georg-August-Universität is the oldest and largest university in Lower Saxony. Demand for affordable and flexible moves is correspondingly high, especially at the change of semester in March/April and September/October. Our student move offer is specially tailored to small budgets and short-notice dates.
Typical destinations include halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk (student services) in the Nordstadt, rooms in shared flats in the city centre or new builds in Grone. We are also happy to plan the move from the parental home into the first flat of your own, often from the surrounding area such as Rosdorf or Bovenden. For smaller volumes, such as a single room, we also offer an inexpensive part load.
- Dates allocated with lead time, including for the start of semester
- Fair fixed prices from €359 for small flats and rooms
- Planning for narrow staircases in period buildings in the city centre
- Flexible loading and unloading times around the Nordstadt halls of residence
Booking your move in Göttingen could not be simpler: contact us by phone, email or via our online form and briefly describe the scope and your preferred date. We then draw up a non-binding offer, which you can accept without hidden costs. Once the date is confirmed, we take care of everything else – from the parking restriction zone to the last box.
The same straightforward process also applies to private moves by families or young professionals moving to Göttingen for work. This way you arrive in your new home quickly and without stress.
Applying for a parking restriction zone in Göttingen: road traffic department, deadline and fee
In Göttingen you apply for a parking restriction zone for moving work at the road traffic department, Fachdienst Straßenverkehr (Team Parkausweise), Neues Rathaus, Hiroshimaplatz 1–4. According to the city, the application must be received no later than two weeks before the planned moving date and can be made informally in writing or in person. For short-notice requests less than a week ahead, an informal email to [email protected] is sufficient.
You must state your name, address and phone number, the exact location (street and house number), the moving day and the type of vehicle, for example a car with trailer, a Sprinter van or a 7.5-tonne lorry. The permit fee is €35. In pay-parking zones, special-use fees per parking space are added.
When it comes to the signs, you have a choice: you put up the official traffic signs (sign 283 with supplementary sign) yourself and are then responsible for transporting, setting up, dismantling and returning them, or you commission the moving company. Also note that no permits are issued on Sundays and public holidays. Under the Lower Saxony Public Holidays Act, furniture transports are not permitted on those days; moves must fall on a working day or a Saturday. How we coordinate the dates is explained on the parking restriction zone page.
According to the city, processing can take up to 14 days, plus postal delivery. You can reach the Team Parkausweise by phone on 0551 400-613210 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9 am to 12 noon, Thursdays 9 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 4 pm).
Göttingen: the Weende, Geismar and Grone districts and bulky waste via GEB
Besides the core city, Göttingen includes several districts, which the city describes on its portal. Weende is the northernmost and also the largest district. Geismar lies in the south of the city, Grone west of the city centre and Nikolausberg to the north-east, above the Luttertal valley. According to the city, Weende and Grone were incorporated in 1964. Anyone moving between these districts and the city centre should have access, floor and lift clarified in the offer.
In the city of Göttingen, GEB (Göttinger Entsorgungsbetriebe, the municipal waste service) is responsible for bulky waste. Disposal is free of charge for private households up to 4 m³; for larger quantities a written agreement is required and €49 per cubic metre is charged. Registration is online via the GEB form, after which GEB allocates the collection date. Allow several weeks' lead time. The waste may be put out no earlier than the evening before and must be outside by 6 am on collection day; individual items may not be longer than 2.20 m or weigh more than 75 kg. Collection only applies within the city area; residents of the Göttingen district register bulky waste with the district.
